The Lost King’s Legacy

Chapter 14: Chapter 6: Journey to Berk

Lyra stood motionless at the peak of the ruined kingdom, her crystalline green eyes fixed on the empty expanse of sky where Nyx had disappeared. The Info Lens in her hands emitted a faint, steady glow, flickering like the dying embers of her fragile, uncertain hope. The twilight cast long shadows over her silvery-blonde hair, which shimmered with an otherworldly light in the dimming sun. Though her figure seemed ethereal and fragile against the desolate backdrop, her stance carried an unyielding strength—quiet defiance against the centuries of loss that weighed heavily on her.

Beside her, Lexy shifted restlessly, her crystalline wings refracting the light into soft rainbows that danced across the frost-laden ground. The dragon's melodic trill hummed through the cold air, a sound at once soothing and resonant with unspoken reassurance. Sensing Lyra's turmoil, Lexy nudged her gently with her snout. Lyra's hand moved instinctively to the dragon's neck, her trembling fingers seeking comfort in the creature's warm, familiar scales.

Behind her, the Riders exchanged uneasy glances. Their dragons, ever attuned to tension, shifted restlessly, their sharp eyes flickering between Lyra and the distant horizon. Hiccup, standing slightly apart, rested his hand on Toothless's saddle as he watched Lyra. She looked so heartbreakingly alone against the ruins of her shattered world, and he felt a deep pang of empathy.

Astrid stepped closer to Hiccup, nudging him lightly with her elbow. "You should say something," she murmured, her blue eyes fixed on Lyra. "She's clearly carrying the weight of… everything."

Hiccup nodded, exhaling slowly. "Yeah, okay." His voice was soft but resolute as he stepped forward. He didn't want to shatter the fragile silence that enveloped her, but something needed to be said.

"Lyra," he began, his tone careful, tentative, "I know we can't understand exactly what you've been through. What you've lost. But…" He hesitated, choosing his words with care. "You don't have to face it alone. We're here. If you need help, anything at all, we want to be there for you."

Lyra didn't respond immediately. Her gaze remained fixed on the horizon, where the last streaks of sunlight bled into the darkening sky. The wind tugged at her cloak, swirling her hair in a silver halo. When she finally turned to look at Hiccup, her expression was guarded, her grief wrapped tightly in a shell of fragile composure.

"You… offer help?" she asked, her voice melodic but hesitant, as if the concept itself was foreign to her. The Info Lens pulsed faintly in her hands, its magic translating the unfamiliar language.

Hiccup nodded firmly. "Yes. We're offering you a place to rest, to think, to heal." His voice softened, and he added, "Come with us to Berk. It's safe there. You'll have a home. And together, we'll figure out what's next."

Lyra turned back to the ruins of Aether below, her eyes clouded with memories of what had been. She glanced at the Info Lens in her hands, its soft glow reflecting the faintest hint of hope in her eyes. "Berk?" she repeated, the word unfamiliar on her tongue.

Hiccup took a small step closer, his tone warm and inviting. "It's our home. A place where humans and dragons live side by side. It's not perfect, but it's… good. Different, but good."

At the mention of dragons and humans coexisting, a flicker of longing passed across Lyra's face, followed quickly by a shadow of sorrow. "Humans and dragons… together," she murmured, her voice tinged with wistfulness. Her gaze drifted to Lexy, who pressed closer to her, offering silent support.

"It's not your kingdom," Hiccup said gently, his words steady but compassionate. "But it could be a new start. And we know what it's like to rebuild after losing everything."

Lyra studied him intently, her crystalline green eyes searching his face for an unspoken truth. After a long moment, she gave a small, measured nod. "I will… go."

A trill of approval escaped Lexy, who nuzzled Lyra's shoulder with a soft, almost maternal affection. Lyra climbed onto the Crystal Fury's back with practiced grace, her movements steady despite the emotional storm churning within her.

Hiccup's shoulders relaxed, and he released a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. Relief softened his expression into a small, genuine smile. "Good," he said, his voice lighter. He turned toward the other Riders, raising his voice. "All right, everyone. Let's head back to Berk."

The Riders moved quickly, mounting their dragons and forming a protective formation around Lyra and Lexy. Toothless took to the air first, his wings cutting through the cold wind with ease, and the others followed. Lexy ascended gracefully, her crystalline wings shimmering with refracted light as she joined them. Lyra kept her gaze forward, the ruins of Aether growing smaller behind her. Her thoughts were a whirlwind of grief, hope, and fear.

The flight began in solemn silence, the rhythmic beats of dragon wings and the soft whistle of the wind creating a somber melody. Lyra sat upright on Lexy's back, her posture poised but tense. Her eyes wandered between the horizon and the dragons flying beside her. Each Rider moved with effortless coordination, their bonds with their dragons evident in every fluid motion. The sight stirred a painful ache in Lyra's chest—a memory of Aether as it had once been.

Hiccup, leading the formation, glanced back and noticed the way Lyra's gaze lingered on the dragons. He recognized the look—nostalgia tinged with sorrow. Clearing his throat softly, he decided to break the silence. "So, Lyra," he called over the wind, his tone gentle. "Is that… your bonded dragon?"

Lyra's hand moved instinctively to Lexy's neck, her fingers tracing the glowing lines of the dragon's crystalline scales. "She's Lexy, She is more than my dragon," Lyra replied, her voice soft but resonant. "She is my heart, my guide. Without her… I would have been lost long ago."

Hiccup smiled faintly, nodding in understanding. "I get that," he said. "Toothless isn't just my dragon. He's family. I wouldn't be who I am today without him."

Toothless, hearing his name, let out a playful chirp and glanced back at Lexy. His emerald-green eyes blinked curiously, and he adjusted his flight to draw closer to the Crystal Fury. Lexy responded with a melodic trill, her shimmering eyes glowing softly as she studied him. The two dragons exchanged a look, an unspoken understanding passing between them.

"They seem to get along," Hiccup observed, his smile widening.

Lyra's lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile. "Perhaps they do."

Behind them, Astrid urged Stormfly forward, her curiosity piqued. "Lexy's incredible," she said, her tone sincere. "I've never seen a dragon like her before. What species is she ? Or is she unique?"

"The Crystal Fury is rare, a subspecies of the Elemental Furies." Lyra explained, her pride evident. "She is born of light and song. Her crystals have the power to heal wounds that even time cannot mend."

Astrid exchanged an impressed glance with Hiccup. "Healing dragons," she said, her voice tinged with awe. "I've heard stories, but I never thought I'd see one."

"She is… remarkable," Lyra said softly, her hand resting more firmly on Lexy's neck.

As they flew on, the clouds began to part, revealing the vibrant colors of a setting sun. When Berk came into view, nestled against towering cliffs and bustling with life, it was a striking contrast to the desolation of Aether. Dragons of all sizes soared above the village, their vibrant scales catching the light as they moved in harmony with the humans below.

"There it is," Hiccup said, gesturing toward the village. "Welcome to Berk."

Lyra's green eyes widened slightly as she took in the sight. "It is…" She paused, searching for the right word. "Alive," she finally said.

Hiccup chuckled. "That's one way to put it."

As they descended, villagers stopped what they were doing, their curious gazes fixed on Lyra and Lexy. Whispers spread quickly, and while some faces showed awe, others held apprehension.

Hiccup dismounted and raised his hands in a calming gesture. "Everyone," he called out, his voice steady but firm. "This is Lyra. She's our guest. Treat her with kindness, all right?"

The murmurs softened, and the crowd dispersed, though lingering glances followed Lyra as she slid off Lexy's back. She stood tall, her posture composed despite the weight of the moment.

"Come with me," Hiccup said, his tone reassuring. "I'll introduce you to my dad, Stoick. We'll make sure you have a place to stay."

Lyra stepped cautiously through the village of Berk, her crystalline green eyes scanning the surroundings with a mixture of apprehension and curiosity. The bustle of life here was overwhelming after the silence of Aether's ruins. Children played among the wooden houses, dragons roosted on rooftops, and the smell of smoked fish mingled with the salty breeze from the ocean. Lexy, ever watchful, remained close to her side, her crystalline wings shimmering softly in the fading light.

Hiccup led the way to the Great Hall, a massive wooden structure perched on a rise that overlooked the village. Its doors, carved with intricate depictions of dragons and heroes, stood wide open, welcoming them into its warm interior. The hall's walls were lined with banners, shields, and trophies of past victories, and a large fire pit in the center bathed the space in a golden glow.

At the head of the hall stood Stoick the Vast, the towering and broad-shouldered chief of Berk. His thick red beard framed a face that was both stern and kind, his blue eyes sharp as they settled on Lyra. He stood as Hiccup entered, spreading his arms to embrace his son in a brief but hearty hug.

"Hiccup!" Stoick boomed, his deep voice filling the hall. "You're back, safe and sound. And who's this you've brought with you?"

Hiccup stepped aside, gesturing to Lyra. "Dad, this is Lyra. She's… well, she's from far away. Her home was destroyed, and she needs a place to stay while she figures out her next steps."

Stoick's gaze shifted to Lyra, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied her. Despite the intimidating scrutiny, Lyra stood tall, her posture composed, though her hand instinctively rested on Lexy's neck.

"And this magnificent creature?" Stoick asked, his tone softening as he inclined his head toward Lexy.

"This is Lexy," Lyra replied, her voice melodic but measured. "She is my bonded dragon, a Crystal Fury."

Stoick stroked his beard thoughtfully, clearly impressed. "A Crystal Fury, eh? I've never heard of such a dragon, but she's a beauty." His tone was warm but firm as he turned back to Lyra. "You're welcome here, lass, for as long as you need. We don't turn away those in need."

Lyra inclined her head in gratitude. "Thank you, Chief Stoick. I will not impose for long."

Stoick waved a hand dismissively. "Nonsense! We'll sort out a place for you. No one in Berk is left out in the cold." He turned to Hiccup, his expression softening into pride. "You've done well, son, bringing her here."

Hiccup gave a small, almost sheepish smile. "Thanks, Dad. I just… thought she could use some help."

"I'll see to it that a new house is built for you," Stoick continued, addressing Lyra directly. "It won't take long. The villagers are good at coming together for something like this."

Lyra hesitated, her gaze dropping to the floor for a moment before she looked back up. "That is generous of you, Chief. But I do not wish to be a burden. Lexy and I can manage with far less."

Before Stoick could respond, Astrid stepped forward, her hands on her hips. "You don't have to stay in a house right away if you're uncomfortable," she offered, her voice firm but kind. "You can stay with me for now. I've got enough room, and it's no trouble."

Lyra blinked in surprise at the offer. Her gaze shifted to Astrid, her guarded expression softening just slightly. "You are… kind to offer this," Lyra said carefully. "If it is no trouble, I will accept."

"It's settled, then," Stoick declared with finality. "Astrid, take her to your place and make sure she's comfortable. We'll start on that house tomorrow."

With that, Stoick turned his attention to other matters, leaving Hiccup and Astrid to lead Lyra and Lexy out of the Great Hall.

As they stepped into the cool night air, the lively sounds of Berk surrounded them once again. Astrid walked beside Lyra, her pace steady and her demeanor calm. "It's not far," Astrid said, nodding toward the path ahead.

Lyra followed, Lexy's soft footsteps on the cobblestone path a comforting rhythm beside her. The dragon glanced around with curiosity, her glowing scales catching the flicker of lantern light and casting soft prisms onto the ground. Villagers they passed gave them wide-eyed glances, some nodding in greeting while others whispered among themselves.

"Don't mind them," Astrid said over her shoulder, noticing Lyra's glance at the curious onlookers. "New faces aren't all that common around here, especially with dragons as unique as Lexy."

Lyra nodded, her hand resting on Lexy's side. "They are not… unkind," she said, her voice thoughtful.

"They're good people," Astrid agreed. "Just nosy." She gave a small smile.

After a short walk, they arrived at Astrid's home—a sturdy, well-kept house perched on a rise with a view of the sea. A large wooden perch sat outside for Stormfly, who had flown ahead and now waited patiently. The dragon greeted them with a cheerful warble, tilting her head curiously at Lexy.

Astrid opened the door and gestured for Lyra to step inside. "Welcome to my home," she said simply.

Lyra entered cautiously, her eyes taking in the cozy interior. The walls were adorned with weapons and trophies, a testament to Astrid's skill as a warrior. A hearth in the corner crackled with a warm fire, and the scent of pine filled the air.

"You can take this room," Astrid said, opening a door to a small but comfortable space. "It's not much, but it's private."

Lyra stepped inside, running her hand lightly over the wooden frame of the bed. "It is more than enough," she said quietly.

Astrid nodded, leaning against the doorframe. "I figured you'd want some space, but if you need anything, just ask." She hesitated for a moment before adding, "I know it's probably hard being in a new place after… everything."

Lyra turned to look at her, something unspoken passing between them. "It is hard," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "But your kindness… makes it easier."

Astrid smiled faintly. "Get some rest. Tomorrow's a new day."

With that, she left Lyra alone, closing the door softly behind her. Lyra sat on the edge of the bed, her hand resting on ring on her ring finger. The soft glow of the ring reflected her thoughts—a flickering light of hope amid the shadows of her grief.

Outside, Lexy curled up near Stormfly, the two dragons exchanging low, melodic sounds that carried through the still night.
