The Lost King’s Legacy

Chapter 10: Chapter 2: Awakening

Astrid leaps onto Stormfly's back with practiced ease, scanning the frozen terrain for the others. "What is that thing?" she yells, pointing at the crystal as its surface begins to fracture.

"I don't think we want to find out!" Snotlout shouts, hauling himself onto Hookfang as the Monstrous Nightmare thrashes against his grip.

Hiccup reaches Toothless just as a loud crack splits the air. The crystal shatters with a deafening roar, sending shards of glowing emberstone flying outward. The Riders duck for cover, their dragons instinctively shielding them with their wings. From the heart of the explosion, a dense plume of mist rises, swirling with traces of golden light.

As the mist clears, the creature comes into focus: sleek, pitch-black scales ripple with an inner glow of molten gold, forming intricate patterns across its body. Its form is strikingly familiar, almost a reflection of Toothless, but larger, more imposing, and radiating an aura of raw, unrestrained power.

The dragon's molten-gold eyes narrow, locking onto the intruders. With deliberate movements, it steps forward, its presence suffused with elemental energy.

"Is that... a Night Fury?" Astrid's voice is barely above a whisper, her hand tightening on her axe.

"No," Fishlegs murmurs, his voice trembling with awe and fear. "That's not a Night Fury. That's... something else."

The dragon—Chaos—lifts its head high, surveying the group. The air grows heavy, charged with an unseen energy that presses against their chests, making it hard to breathe. Toothless snarls, mirroring Chaos's movements as if ready to engage.

For a moment, there is stillness.

Then Chaos roars.

The sound is otherworldly, primal, and impossibly loud, shaking the frozen ruins to their core. The elements themselves respond to the dragon's fury—winds howl, shards of ice rain down from above, and a circle of fire ignites in the frost surrounding the Riders, cutting off their escape.

Hiccup instinctively grabs Toothless's reins, his voice sharp with urgency. "Stay together! Don't provoke it!"

Chaos had no intention of waiting. Its massive wings snapped open, sending gusts of wind rippling through the frozen plains. With a powerful beat, it propelled itself into the air, a dark silhouette against the stormy sky. The molten patterns etched across its sleek body flared brighter, crackling with energy that danced along its spine like a living current. The air around it shimmered with heat, a stark contrast to the icy terrain below.

"Get ready!" Hiccup shouted, gripping Toothless's reins tightly as the Night Fury crouched, muscles coiled and ready to spring. The Riders scrambled to position themselves, their dragons fanning out to form a defensive circle.

Chaos's tail whipped through the air, the motion swift and precise. A bolt of lightning arced from the tail's molten tip, striking the ground near the Riders with a deafening crack. Shards of ice and chunks of rock exploded outward, forcing them to scatter. Stormfly barrel-rolled to avoid the debris, her bright blue scales glittering in the firelight.

Hookfang roared in defiance, flames curling from his jaws as he surged upward. Snotlout urged him on. "Come on, Hookfang! Let's show it who's boss!" The Monstrous Nightmare unleashed a torrent of fire, aiming for Chaos's underbelly.

But the flames merely licked against Chaos's scales and dissipated, leaving the molten patterns glowing brighter in mockery of the attack.

"It's too strong!" Fishlegs shouted as he frantically pulled Meatlug back, the Gronckle letting out a low, frightened moan. Chaos twisted in midair, its movements precise and almost impossibly fast for its size.

The massive dragon retaliated, releasing a swirling vortex of fire and wind. The attack surged forward like a living storm, a fiery whirlwind that roared as it tore across the frozen battlefield.

"Scatter!" Hiccup yelled, his voice cutting through the chaos. Toothless launched into the air, narrowly evading the vortex as it slammed into the ground. Ice cracked and heaved beneath the force of the impact, sending shockwaves rippling outward.

Astrid and Stormfly veered sharply to the left, dodging a cascade of falling ice. Astrid's heart pounded as she tightened her grip on Stormfly's saddle. "We can't let it keep pushing us back!" she shouted, but the power of Chaos was undeniable.

Above them, Chaos let out a bone-shaking roar, twisting its body in the air as it prepared another strike. Its wings flared wide, molten-gold patterns igniting like rivers of lava flowing beneath its obsidian skin. With a sharp tilt of its head, the dragon targeted Ruffnut and Tuffnut.

The twin Vikings screamed in unison as Chaos sent a rapid volley of molten fireballs toward them. Barf and Belch twisted through the air, each head working together to dodge the fiery projectiles. The heat singed their wings, and one fireball narrowly missed Ruffnut's braid.

"This thing's trying to barbeque us!" Tuffnut yelled, clinging desperately to the saddle.

"Shut up and do something useful!" Ruffnut snapped, slapping his arm as they swerved again to avoid another attack.

Hookfang surged upward, Snotlout goading him into another offensive move. "Come on, big guy! Let's hit it where it hurts!" The Monstrous Nightmare released another jet of fire, this one more concentrated, aiming directly at Chaos's head.

Chaos responded with terrifying speed. Its jaws opened wide, and from within its throat, a swirling mix of fire and wind erupted. The attack slammed into Hookfang's flames, consuming them effortlessly before hurtling toward the Monstrous Nightmare. Hookfang pulled up sharply, narrowly avoiding the brunt of the blast, but the shockwave sent them spiraling.

"Not good! Not good!" Snotlout cried as he struggled to regain control. Hookfang righted himself just in time to dodge a follow-up strike—a jagged bolt of golden lightning that scorched the air where they had been moments before.

On the ground, Meatlug was doing her best to stay out of Chaos's line of fire, but the massive dragon's relentless attacks made it nearly impossible. Chaos swooped low, its tail whipping out like a striking snake. The molten blade of its tail sliced through an outcropping of ice, sending jagged shards tumbling down toward the Riders.

"Move!" Hiccup shouted, guiding Toothless through the falling debris. The Night Fury twisted and dove, narrowly avoiding the deadly cascade. Stormfly shot past them, spinning midair as she loosed a flurry of sharp spines toward Chaos. The spines glanced harmlessly off its molten scales, shattering as they fell.

Chaos turned its attention toward Astrid and Stormfly, its molten eyes narrowing with a dangerous gleam. It inhaled deeply, the air around its jaws distorting with heat.

"Look out!" Fishlegs screamed, watching in horror as Chaos unleashed a concentrated beam of fire, the intense heat carving through the icy ground like a blade. Stormfly spun wildly to avoid the attack, the edges of her wings singed.

"Thanks for the warning!" Astrid shouted back, sweat dripping despite the frigid air.

The Riders regrouped, their dragons circling defensively, but Chaos was relentless. The massive dragon landed with a resounding crash, the impact sending tremors through the frozen ruins. Molten eyes locked onto them, burning with fury. It snarled, the sound reverberating through the ice-choked air like the growl of an approaching storm.

Hiccup clenched his fists, his mind racing for a solution. "We can't win like this."

"We need to get out of here!" Astrid shouts, guiding Stormfly to Hiccup's side. "Whatever this thing is, we're not equipped to handle it!"

"Not yet!" Hiccup replies, his eyes fixed on the frozen palace beyond Chaos. Something about the scene feels incomplete, as though the dragon isn't just attacking—it's protecting something.

Chaos roared again, the sound resonating through the frozen landscape like the roar of an unleashed tempest. The molten patterns along its obsidian scales glowed even brighter, casting an eerie, golden light that danced across the ruins. The ground beneath them vibrated with raw power, frost fracturing into spiderweb cracks that spread outward.

The Riders scattered in every direction, their dragons weaving through the ruins like shadows. Each movement was a calculated escape, driven by survival instinct.

"Keep moving! Don't stop!" Hiccup's voice cut through the chaos as he guided Toothless through the crumbling structures. The Night Fury's wings cut through the air, narrowly dodging another surge of molten energy. Toothless's eyes were wide, fierce, as if he understood the stakes.

Astrid and Stormfly darted left, skimming low over the icy terrain to avoid another cascading blast. Chaos's torrent of energy carved deep furrows in the frozen ground, each strike throwing up clouds of frost and stone.

"Stormfly, faster!" Astrid urged, clenching the saddle tightly. The Nadder's wings flared, carrying them out of range just as a massive column of fire erupted where they'd been moments before.

Fishlegs clung to Meatlug, his face pale with fear. "We can't keep this up!" he cried, the Gronckle's heavy body struggling to maneuver through the chaos. Chaos's relentless attacks pushed them further back, closer to the ancient ruins they'd sought to explore.

Barf and Belch swooped erratically through the air, Ruffnut and Tuffnut bickering even in the midst of danger. "Go left! No, the other left!" Ruffnut yelled. Belch dodged an explosion of molten rock just in time, the twins clinging to the saddle with white knuckles.

Snotlout and Hookfang circled above, trying to find an opening to strike. "Come on, Hookfang! We've faced worse!" But even Snotlout's bravado faltered as Chaos twisted in mid-air, its molten eyes locking onto them. A surge of blinding lightning shot from Chaos's tail, barely missing them.

"Okay, maybe not worse than this," Snotlout muttered, his face tight with tension.

Chaos's attacks were relentless, its movements fluid and terrifyingly precise. Every strike forced the Riders further from the palace's heart, scattering them like leaves in a storm. It wasn't merely an onslaught; it was a calculated push, each move driving them deeper into unfamiliar territory.

Then, without warning, Chaos froze mid-attack. The molten glow in its eyes flickered as though a switch had been flipped. Its wings folded, and it hovered, still and silent, its head snapping sharply toward the ruins. The air around it crackled with dissipating energy, leaving an eerie, almost hollow silence in its wake.

The Riders and their dragons hovered, catching their breath, eyes wide with confusion and cautious hope.

"What's it doing?" Astrid's voice was low, almost a whisper, her eyes never leaving the massive dragon. Stormfly's wings flapped softly, ready to move at any moment.

Chaos let out a low, resonant growl—not of anger or aggression, but something deeper. There was a strange quality to the sound, a low rumble that echoed in their bones. It wasn't a challenge; it was a signal. A question, perhaps. Curiosity? Recognition?

The great dragon's molten eyes softened slightly, its posture shifting from predatory to purposeful. With deliberate, almost reverent movements, Chaos turned away from them. Its steps were slow, heavy with intent, the molten patterns dimming as it approached the shattered palace.

Hiccup watched in awe, his brow furrowed. He glanced at the others, then back at Chaos. "Stay close. I think it's leading us somewhere."

The Riders exchanged uncertain glances, but Hiccup's voice carried an unspoken assurance. They guided their dragons forward, following Chaos at a cautious distance.

The ruins loomed larger as they approached, the remnants of an ancient civilization buried beneath layers of ice and time. The walls were vast, intricate carvings barely visible beneath the frost, depicting scenes of dragons and warriors intertwined in an eternal dance of conflict and unity.

Chaos's molten glow cast long, eerie shadows across the frost-covered walls, making the carvings seem to shift and move. The atmosphere was thick with mystery and tension, the air heavy with the weight of something ancient and forgotten.

They passed through a colossal archway, the stone blackened and cracked, perhaps by some long-ago battle. The silence was profound, broken only by the soft crunch of ice beneath their dragons' claws and the rhythmic hum of energy that still pulsed around Chaos.

At the heart of the palace ruins lay a vast chamber, its ceiling lost to darkness. Pillars of ice and stone stretched toward the heavens, like sentinels guarding a forgotten secret. In the center stood a pedestal, a block of ice encasing something that glowed with an ethereal light.

The Riders gasped in unison. Embedded in the ice was a sword, its blade a deep, obsidian black with intricate gold finishings that glimmered like molten metal. The blade seemed almost alive, its surface reflecting the faint glow of the ruins around it. Each pulse of light from within sent a rhythmic hum through the air—a deep, resonant vibration that seemed to synchronize with Chaos itself, the patterns on the dragon's scales subtly flickering in response.

Chaos approached the sword, its molten eyes fixed on it with a reverence that seemed out of place for such a fearsome creature. The tension in its body had melted away, replaced by an almost... solemn stillness.

"What... is this place?" Fishlegs whispered, his voice trembling with awe.

Hiccup's eyes were wide, filled with both wonder and confusion. "I don't know," he replied softly. "But whatever it is... it's important to Him."

The dragon let out another low growl, its gaze never leaving the sword. The energy surrounding it was no longer chaotic and destructive; it was controlled, purposeful.

The Riders and their dragons watched, holding their breath, as Chaos took a step closer to the sword. The hum of energy grew louder, the air thick with anticipation. Something ancient was awakening.

Hiccup swallowed hard, a shiver running down his spine. "I think we're about to find out what it was protecting all along."

With a sudden, deafening crack, the ice surrounding the sword shattered, sending shards scattering across the chamber. A pulse of energy rippled outward, forcing the Riders to shield their eyes. As the brilliance dimmed, a figure emerged from the mist, standing tall at the center of the ruins. He held the black-bladed sword with gold finishings tightly in one hand, the weapon's glow casting a flickering, molten light.

The man—Nyx Aetherion—opened his molten-gold eyes slowly, the hue strikingly similar to Chaos's. His black hair, streaked with threads of gold, flowed around his shoulders like a dark river of molten metal. He took a shaky step forward, the glow of the sword in his grip reflecting the uncertainty in his expression. His gaze swept over the chamber, lingering on the ruins, the dragons, and finally the wide-eyed Riders. His eyes narrowed as he struggled to process the scene before him, confusion and recognition flickering across his face.

Chaos let out a low, almost comforting growl. The molten patterns along its body pulsed in rhythm with the sword's hum, as if connected by an unseen bond. Nyx's gaze snapped to the massive dragon, his expression softening with a spark of recognition.

In a voice rough with disuse, he spoke, the words hesitant but rich with an ancient melody. "Val'serin… tuara ven'al?" (Chaos… what has happened?)

Chaos rumbled in response, the deep sound carrying layers of meaning only Nyx seemed to understand. The dragon's body relaxed, the molten glow in its eyes softening. The silent exchange between them seemed to bridge a gap of centuries.

From the dissipating mist, another form became visible. Ice fractured and fell away, revealing a girl—Lyra Celestia. Her silvery-blonde hair cascaded in shimmering waves, catching the fading light of the chamber. Her crystalline green eyes blinked slowly, wide with confusion as she took in the unfamiliar world around her.

Lyra stumbled slightly, disoriented. Nyx's eyes widened, and without hesitation, he moved to her side. He steadied her with a firm, reassuring grip, his gaze searching hers. "Lyra... ana vel'thar?" (Lyra… are you all right?)

She nodded, her eyes meeting his with a flicker of recognition and uncertainty. Her voice was soft, almost a whisper. "Nyx... vel'ren vas enar?" (Nyx... where are we?)

Nyx's expression tightened. "I don't know," he replied, his voice low. His eyes swept over the chamber again, his grip on the sword tightening. "Something has changed."

Before they could say more, a deep rumble echoed through the chamber. Ice along the far wall shattered, revealing another dragon. This was a Night Fury—but not like Toothless. Its scales glimmered like crystalline frost, refracting the faint light into dazzling patterns. The pale blue eyes, serene yet intense, scanned the room before settling on Lyra.

The dragon—Lexy—took a cautious step forward towards Lyra, its gaze filled with quiet recognition and unwavering loyalty. It stretched its wings, the delicate crystalline structure catching the light like a thousand diamonds.

Nyx turned back to Chaos, his voice low and filled with questions. "Tu'ara ven'thal…" (What is this place… what happened to us?)

Chaos rumbled again, a deeper, more somber sound this time. Whatever the answer was, it lay beyond words—an ancient truth lost to time, now waiting to be rediscovered.

Hiccup, watching the scene unfold, tightened his grip on Toothless's saddle. His mind raced, heart pounding with awe and uncertainty. "So, This... this is what he was protecting."
