The House at the Edge

Chapter 2: The Mysterious Smell of the Well

My life takes another unexpected turn!

when my father lands a new job that requires moving to a new location. He quickly buys a house in a village near his workplace, and soon my entire family is on the move. I am not sure what to expect, but the thought that I get to start over again and make a fresh start is more than slightly appealing.

My excitedly blurt out, "This is my first time moving house with a family! I'm so happy!"

My family members look at me with amused smiles, understanding my excitement. My mother places her arm around my shoulders and says, "I'm glad you're happy, sweetheart. This will be a fresh start for all of us."

As soon as I arrive at the new house, I met with the sight of a large, albeit old and unkempt, building. Despite the disrepair, I remain optimistic and figure that a good cleaning and some new furniture will easily fix the problem. My mother and sister start cleaning the inside of the house, while my father and I take on the task of tidying up outside.

As I help my father clean behind the house, I notice an old well. The smell coming from inside it is strong and unpleasant. My curiosity gets the better of me and my edge closer to the well to investigate. I lean over the edge, peering into its depths, hoping to find the source of the foul odor.

As I get closer to the well, the stench becomes more intense and unbearable. It's like a combination of decaying animals, rotted flesh and garbage all combined into one sickening odor. The smell is so overwhelmingly strong and putrid that it makes my stomach churn and my eyes water. I struggle to keep myself from retching as I take in the overwhelming reek causing a strong urge to leave the area immediately.

Just as I are about to reach the well, I hear my father's voice calling my name. Startled, I pause and turn to look at him, only to find him gesturing for me to come help him lift something. The putrid smell is momentarily forgotten as I rush over to assist my father, assuming he will deal with the odor later on.

I hurry to my father's side and help him lift the item he was referring to. After I finish the task, my father notices my slightly distressed expression and asks, "Is something wrong, champ?"

My father's question snaps I out of my moment of confusion. I shake my head and force a small smile, trying to hide my unease. "No, nothing's wrong," I reply, my voice slightly shaky. But I inwardly wonder about the strange smell coming from the well.

My father gives me a reassuring smile before giving me a final instruction, "Just a heads up, I don't want you or your sister going near the well. It's not safe, and I'm worried either of you might fall in. Can you make sure to tell that to Alice as well?"

I nod in response to my father's request, understanding the seriousness in his voice. "I'll make sure to tell Alice," I assure him, already contemplating how I will convince her to stay away from the well.

I head to look for my sister, only to find her standing near the well. Panic rises in my chest as I see her so close to the potentially dangerous pit. I quickly approach her, trying to remain calm as I call out to her. "Hey, Alice, you need to step away from the well," I say firmly.

As I approach my sister, I notice something off. She seems different, as if she's not quite herself. Her gaze is fixed on the well, and there's an odd expression on her face. It almost seems like she is in a trance or possessed by something.

Worried and a little scared, I step closer to Alice and gently place my hand on her shoulder. "Hey, sis," I say, using a softer tone this time. "What are you doing by the well? Dad said we should stay away from it."

Alice turns her head to look at me, but her eyes are glazed over, and she doesn't seem fully aware of her surroundings. She doesn't respond to my question, her focus still fixed on the well. I start to feel a sense of unease growing within myself, wondering what could possibly be going on with my sister.

I try to remain calm, but the sight of my sister in such a strange state is concerning. I grip her shoulder a little tighter, trying to get her attention. "Alice," I say more forcefully, "Snap out of it. You're scaring me."

My words seem to finally snap Alice out of her trance-like state. She shakes her head slightly and looks at my with a confused expression, as if she's suddenly becoming aware of her surroundings again.

I take my sister by the hand and lead her back to the house, explaining to my parents that she's not feeling well and needs to rest. They seem concerned, but they trust my judgement and agree that she should take a break to recover. I guide Alice to her designated room and help her into bed, making sure she's comfortable before leaving her to rest.

If i remember correcly, Alice she….
