Chapter 16: Unexpected
Zhao Feng pulled the half-grown old man back into the carriage with both hands and growled angrily, "Apologize to my girl, or I'll throw you off the bus."
The half-grown old man, his face full of menace but his voice trembling, retorted, "Kid, I know you're a high school student. Don't think I'm afraid to report you."
Zhao Feng smirked coldly. "Report away. See if you're tougher or if I am. I'm Huang Dapiao, the leader for ten square miles around No. 1 High School. Even the principal calls me 'Piao Ge' when he sees me. If you have the guts, go ahead and report, but I don't need a graduation certificate anyway."
The half-grown old man grew furious, his anger nearing uncontrollable levels. "I'm not going to your school. I'll find your parents."
Zhao Feng teased him, "Forgot to tell you? My dad is a construction boss. He has over a hundred brick movers under him. He could bulldoze your house in minutes with an excavator. You can try if you think you're tough enough."
The half-grown old man was so furious he almost coughed up blood but had no way to counter Zhao Feng's strength. He growled, "What did you hit me with? It hurts so much."
Zhao Feng tightened his grip on the black bag, shaping it into a brick-like form, and mocked, "Today's exam day for me. Everyone else has pen bags, but I have bricks. You think I'm arrogant now?"
"You...you...you..." The half-grown old man stumbled to his feet, incoherent with anger. He turned, attempting to shove his way into the crowd to escape.
"Stop right there and apologize to my girl. Otherwise, don't even think about leaving the car."
Zhao Feng waved the black bag threateningly, standing boldly to block his way.
The half-grown old man had no choice. Unable to fight back against the young man in front of him, he reluctantly lowered his head and said, "I'm sorry."
Zhao Feng pointed toward Bai Jiaxin in the corner and coldly commanded, "Wrong. Apologize to her."
The half-grown old man turned his gaze toward Bai Jiaxin, dejected and mumbling, "I'm sorry."
Zhao Feng shouted, "Louder. You haven't eaten your fill, have you?"
The half-grown old man raised his voice, "I'm sorry!"
Zhao Feng demanded, "You're not being sincere enough. You need to bow, say 'Miss, I'm sorry. It's my fault.'"
The half-grown old man cursed in his heart. Today had truly been a disaster.
He bowed his head, hands trembling as he made the formal gesture, and said solemnly, "Miss, I'm sorry. I was wrong."
Bai Jiaxin spoke in a clear, sweet voice, "That's enough."
Zhao Feng barked, "Scram."
The bus came to a stop at the station. The half-grown old man's face was utterly humiliated as he covered his face with his hands and ran off the bus, his tears streaming down his face.
Bai Jiaxin's beautiful eyes glimmered as she looked at Zhao Feng curiously. "Zhao Feng, you scared me. I didn't think you were so fierce. You're not very honest, are you?"
Zhao Feng rolled the window up, his hands gripping the handle as he took the half-grown old man's position, shielding Bai Jiaxin in the corner. He sighed, "If I weren't fierce, this old man would have tried to exploit me. If that happened, I wouldn't have the money to pay for his medical expenses."
Bai Jiaxin chuckled, "I suddenly realize that you're pretty cool. Thank you for your help."
Zhao Feng laughed, "Heroes save the damsel. Beautiful ladies ought to offer their gratitude to me. I'm this good-looking; you should consider it."
Bai Jiaxin tilted her head cutely and rubbed his short hair, laughing sweetly, "You're quite bold, Piao Ge. No wonder even No. 1 High School can't contain you. Pretending to act bad, trying to report teachers or parents—don't you think that's a bit much?"
Zhao Feng scratched his head awkwardly, "No choice. Who told me that Piao Ge and I are good brothers? We look out for each other."
The bus suddenly braked sharply with a screech, and the passengers were thrown forward by inertia. Zhao Feng lost his balance and leaned forward uncontrollably, his head accidentally pressing against Bai Jiaxin's lips.
They stared at each other for a moment, their brains completely blank.
Time seemed to stop, the world frozen in an ethereal moment. Zhao Feng thought, I finally succeeded at my first attack on the campus goddess—the girl I secretly adored for three years.
Bai Jiaxin's eyes misted as her cheeks flushed. With an expression filled with anger and sadness, she said, "Bastard. You just stole my most precious first kiss. How are you going to make up for this?"
Zhao Feng awkwardly said, "This is just a beautiful misunderstanding. My first time was stolen too. I'm good-looking, so you're not losing out."
Bai Jiaxin wasn't convinced. Her face turned redder as her fury built, shaking her tiny fist at him and angrily saying, "You're just a grasshopper. You need to pay me back."
Zhao Feng scratched his head weakly, "How about I marry into the Bai family, marry a rich beauty like you? Would that work?"
Bai Jiaxin snapped back, "You wish. Remember this—you owe me a favor for the rest of your life."
Zhao Feng shrugged, "Alright, one day when I become wealthy, you can come find me. Whether you want to marry, have me marry you, or offer yourself as thanks, I'll consider it."
Bai Jiaxin sighed and smiled, "Don't bother me with that. You're just a bad guy."
The bus continued, and Zhao Feng turned toward Zhu Yiqun, who quickly looked out the window, pretending not to have seen anything.
"Class monitor, no need to pretend. I saw everything."
Zhu Yiqun's voice was shaky as he looked back, "Don't worry, Feng Ge. I didn't see anything. We have plenty of couples in our class. This isn't unusual."
Zhao Feng glared at him. "What are you talking about? The campus goddess was in trouble, and you pretended not to see it?"
Bai Jiaxin looked at him curiously. She was sure her plea had been obvious.
Zhu Yiqun hesitated, looking uneasy. He muttered, "I didn't see anything. It's better to stay out of things."
Zhao Feng retorted coldly, "Coward. You had a crush on her too, didn't you? You watched as she was bullied and did nothing. I've got no respect for you."
Ignoring Zhu Yiqun, Zhao Feng moved toward Qian Dapeng's seat. "You didn't help either, did you? Acted like a casual bystander?"
Qian Dapeng looked nervous, attempting to maintain his innocence. His face was full of sweat as he laughed weakly.
Zhao Feng teased, "You're tall and strong, but you're spineless when it comes down to it. A man should fight when it matters, yet you did nothing."
