Chapter 27: Chapter 27: First Traces of Shadow
Vale continued along the winding, silent stone path after leaving the ancient courtyard, as dusk gradually descended and the forest became enveloped in a deep gloom. He proceeded along the narrow trail, with only the distant rustle of leaves and occasional faint murmurs reaching his ears."There's something hidden along this road, I can feel it..." Vale silently pondered, his grip on the faintly glowing ancient key tightening.
Reaching a clearing shrouded in thick fog, he paused. The trees around him interlaced their branches into a dense canopy, and on the soft ground he noticed fresh footprints—imprints that were heavy and deep, unlike the light steps of any villager."These footprints... Who left them? They are not those of a human." he whispered, his voice filled with caution and unease.
As he studied the prints, a subtle footstep echoed from behind him. He spun around, his sword tip trembling slightly as he pointed into the darkness."Who goes there?" Vale asked in a low tone, his voice clear and resolute amid the fog.In the darkness, a vague figure flickered briefly, deliberately avoiding his gaze."So… I am not alone," he thought, his heart pounding faster.
Vale pressed on, noticing along the way strange, weathered markings on the tree bark—runes that resembled those he had seen in the courtyard, yet shadowed with an eerie tint of black. He crouched down and gently touched the cold bark, feeling a subtle vibration as if the trees were softly whispering ancient secrets."The prophecy speaks: only by gathering the lost fragments of light can we banish this endless darkness... Could these be omens?" Vale mused inwardly.
Just then, from afar, a low howl resonated, as if a ferocious beast was stealthily approaching. Vale immediately drew his sword and advanced, his eyes narrowing as the oppressive force of that sound seemed almost tangible, while the air carried a biting chill."I must uncover the truth before the darkness overwhelms me," he silently vowed.
Following the trail of footprints, Vale soon reached a small stream. The gentle murmur of water, reflecting the weak moonlight and the flicker of his key, lent an air of mystery to the night. He knelt and gazed into his reflection in the rippling water, murmuring softly,"As long as that light remains, I shall not give up."
Suddenly, ripples spread across the water as if something stirred beneath its surface. Vale looked up sharply, his sword raised. The soft murmur of water and the creak of branches together made his heart race."Another sign… the dark forces are revealing themselves," he thought, his eyes steely with resolve.
Gathering his thoughts, Vale rose and resumed his journey. Every shadow, every whisper carried the possibility of a clue leading to the lost fragments."I must keep moving, no matter the peril ahead," he vowed internally.
With steady, determined steps, Vale ventured deeper into the gloom, his resolve as unyielding as the ancient key warming his palm. In the inky darkness, he silently repeated,"I will not stop until the truth is unveiled... until the light returns."
