Asella’s small body shuddered once more. He could see her frail hands tensed as she gripped them together tightly. With her head lowered, he couldn’t see what kind of expression she was making, which only added to his frustration.
However, Calix chose to exercise a bit more patience instead of forcibly turning Asella’s face toward him.
“I asked why you ran away.”
Only then did Asella slowly lift her head. Her tightly sealed lips trembled before parting slightly. She seemed on the verge of speaking, wavering several times, before a faint voice finally emerged.
“…..I’m sorry.”
“That’s not what I wanted to hear.”
Calix replied, seemingly exasperated. The interrogation continued.
“Where is your sister now? Why did you hide the fact that she awakened her powers?”
As soon as Mariel’s name was mentioned, Asella’s eyes flickered. But that moment was brief; she clenched her lips tightly and thought.
‘She must have arrived at the temple safely. She’s a smart girl, so she must have met Priest Roshan without any trouble.’
Although she had been captured, the thought that Mariel had another protector eased her mind.
‘He said he was a long-time friend of Mother’s, so he will take good care of Mariel.’
If he held the position of the High Priest, he would be well-informed, and therefore, he would quickly understand Mariel’s situation.
As long as she could safely cross the border, Mariel would be safe. Unlike her, Mariel could find freedom.
‘I have to buy her some time.’
There was no way the Grand Duke would spare her, someone he deemed worthless and useless. Thus, there was only one thing Asella could do for her sister now.
No matter what happened, she would not reveal Meriel’s whereabouts.
“Asella, I’m asking you.”
Asella didn’t answer when she heard the words again. In fact, she turned her head as if to avoid Calix’s gaze altogether.
‘You don’t even want to make eye contact with me now?’
Calix narrowed his eyes, feeling a strange discomfort pressing around his heart which he couldn’t explain. He felt a chill run through him, it was as if the blood within his body was cooling off, and pressed for answers in a cold voice that could not be compared to a moment ago.
“Answer me. Why did you run away? Where is your sister? Why did you hide the fact that she had awakened her powers? All of it.”
“…….”
Silence lingered.
Then there was the sound of teeth grinding came from Calix’s side. His once indifferent eyes now grew cold.
“Are you not going to answer?”
“…….”
