Chapter 8: The System Awakens ll
A strange, mechanical sound echoed in his mind, startling him to his feet. It wasn't coming from the forest; it was coming from within his mind. His vision blurred, and a cold, metallic voice resonated in his ears.
"System is installing... 1%... 10%... 50%... 100%. "
"System installation complete."
Arin staggered back, his heart pounding. "What the—? Who's there?" he shouted, his voice trembling.
The voice spoke again, calm but unmistakably carrying the tone of a middle-aged man. It wasn't overly deep or booming but carried a certain gruff authority, like a seasoned soldier who had seen too much and had little patience for nonsense.
"Welcome, Host. You are now bound to the Multiverse Simulation System. I am your guide."
Arin blinked, his disbelief mounting. The voice was so... ordinary, yet its presence in his mind was anything but. "This… this has to be a dream," he muttered, his voice shaky.
"Incorrect." The voice replied with an audible sigh, as if exasperated by the sheer stupidity of his statement. "This is reality. I have been activated to assist you in navigating the multiverse, gaining power, and achieving your goals. You may call me 'System.'"
Arin stared into the empty air, his mind struggling to process the situation. Then something odd struck him about the voice. "System… wait, why do you sound like… some middle-aged guy? Couldn't you have a cooler voice or something? Like, a beautiful maiden?"
The voice paused for a moment, then returned with a sharp edge of mockery. "Oh, I'm sorry, Host. Shall I also bake you a cake and call you 'Your Majesty'? You're a powerless whelp in the middle of nowhere, mourning your mommy, and you think you're in a position to demand such requests?!"
The voice chuckled dryly. "How precious."
Arin flushed with embarrassment and anger. "I-I just thought—"
"Stop thinking. It clearly isn't your strong suit," the System interrupted, its tone dripping with sarcasm. "My voice is functional and static, and frankly, you're lucky I'm even talking to you. Given your current state, you're in no position to ask for more."
Arin clenched his fists, his frustration mounting. "You don't have to be such a jerk about it," he grumbled under his breath.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Did I hurt your feelings, Host? Let me remind you: you're the one who activated me because you were utterly useless on your own. Now, if you're done whining, we have work to do."
Arin's jaw tightened. Despite the insults, he couldn't deny that the System had a point. "Fine," he muttered. "Just… tell me what to do."
The System sighed again, its tone shifting back to business. "I am a multidimensional construct system designed to integrate with compatible hosts," it explained, its earlier mockery replaced with a matter-
of-fact directness. "My purpose is to provide you with the tools and knowledge necessary to evolve beyond your current limitations. Your despair activated my protocols."
Arin frowned. "Tools? Knowledge? You mean you can help me?"
"Affirmative." The voice took on a more serious edge, as if attempting to hammer the point home. "With my guidance, you will gain the strength to challenge even gods."
The words struck a chord within him. A glimmer of hope flickered in his chest, but doubt lingered in his mind. "You expect me to believe that? That you, some… thing in my head, can make me strong enough to defeat Kal-El?"
The System's tone sharpened, laced with condescension. "You underestimate the vastness of the multiverse. In some universes, beings like Kal-El are revered as gods. In others, they're mere insects crushed underfoot by higher powers. The multiverse is infinite, and its possibilities are far beyond your comprehension. Do you understand, or should I draw you a diagram?"
Arin swallowed hard, the enormity of the System's words pressing down on him.
But…
He finally asked" System, what is a diagram?"
System "…"
Arin "…"
He tried to push past the snark. "If that's true… then what do I do? How do I even begin?"
The System answered immediately, its tone deeper. "First, you must understand the nature of power in the multiverse. Power is not absolute; it is a spectrum, dependent on the laws of each universe. In some realms, divinity is the pinnacle of existence. In others, gods are as insignificant as mortals. To challenge Kal-El, you must surpass the limits of this world and tap into the greater currents of power that flow through the multiverse."
"Surpass the limits?" Arin repeated, his voice tinged with curiosity and suspicion. "And you'll teach me how to do that?"
"Precisely. I will provide you with quests, resources, and skills. I will open paths to dimensions where you can grow stronger. But be warned: the journey will be perilous. You will face foes far beyond your current abilities, and failure will have consequences."
A slow smile spread across Arin's face. For the first time since his mother's departure, he felt a surge of determination. The System's gruff voice still grated on his nerves, but the promise of power was undeniable. "Tell me what to do."
The System snorted. "Finally, some enthusiasm. Now pay attention, Host, and try not to embarrass yourself any further."
