Chapter 61: Give You Some More Stories
After the Christmas holidays began, Lynn started searching for the Mirror of Erised in Hogwarts Castle but didn't know the specific location of the abandoned classroom, which took him three days. Eventually, he found the place by following Harry, who had caused a considerable commotion.
Unfortunately, as soon as he arrived, he noticed Professor Dumbledore sitting at the table, forcing him to seek the professor's permission before studying the Mirror of Erised.
"Oh?" Professor Dumbledore said softly. "But I believe you should understand the dangers of the Mirror of Erised."
Lynn nodded and replied, "Of course. I'm not interested in what the Mirror of Erised reflects. Instead, I'm intrigued by its design. The Mirror of Erised is an extraordinary product of magical craftsmanship, and I want to study its mysteries."
"You should know, Professor, I've become a disciple of Professor Green, and I am now a certified alchemist," Lynn explained to Professor Dumbledore.
As the headmaster of Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledore was naturally aware of most occurrences within the castle. Lynn assumed Dumbledore already knew about his apprenticeship under Professor Green, so he spoke directly and honestly.
Professor Dumbledore didn't appear surprised. A faint light gleamed behind his half-moon spectacles. He nodded slightly and said, "Hogwarts never denies students the opportunity to seek knowledge, except for knowledge that is dangerous. You may study the Mirror of Erised here, but only for tonight. I will move it elsewhere tomorrow."
Lynn had no objections and fully understood the purpose of the Mirror of Erised.
By the end of this school year, the Mirror of Erised would serve as the final obstacle protecting the Philosopher's Stone. Only those who desired the Stone without the intent to use it would be able to retrieve it from the Mirror.
Professor Dumbledore offered a mysterious smile before straightening up and leaving the abandoned classroom.
Lynn watched respectfully as the professor departed, then turned his attention to the Mirror of Erised.
The Mirror of Erised seemed to possess the ability to read minds. After scanning Lynn's heart, it projected a corresponding image.
Lynn glanced at the image in the mirror and smirked with faint disdain.
Without hesitation, he raised his right hand, wand in hand, and a faint golden light shot forth, merging instantly with the Mirror of Erised.
In the next moment, the image in the mirror vanished, and the entire Mirror of Erised began to emit a golden glow. Alchemical runes emerged from the Mirror of Erised, appearing before Lynn.
Lynn waved his wand with ease, manipulating the intricate alchemical circles that appeared before him. Soon, he identified the focus of his inquiry.
With a precise flick of his wand, one alchemical circle glowing with peculiar lines moved toward him. Lynn scrutinized every rune within the circle.
"Is this an alchemical rune that can peer into the heart? It's akin to the effects of Legilimency. Interesting!" Lynn murmured as he studied the glowing runes.
Even when rooted in entirely different systems of power, magic and alchemy often produced methods to achieve similar outcomes.
For instance, firearms used by Muggles and the Killing Curse employed by wizards both served the purpose of ending life.
Similarly, the wizards' Legilimency spell and the alchemical runes before Lynn's eyes could both achieve the goal of delving into another's mind.
"Wait a moment. This enchanted mirror seems to do more than rely on the alchemical circle to peer into the heart…"
Lynn's expression shifted suddenly. He waved his wand again, conjuring another alchemical circle in midair.
Employing a secret technique taught by his mentor, Nicolas Flamel, Lynn began to analyze the alchemical circle.
Before long, he had his answer. "So, the alchemical circles that draw upon the soul, combined with those that create illusions to cloud the mind, together form the enchantments of the Mirror of Erised?"
Withdrawing the golden light from the mirror back into his wand, Lynn allowed the alchemical formations to fade away, their magic receding into the Mirror of Erised.
As he gazed thoughtfully at the mirror, Lynn considered its implications.
Fortunately, the creator of this Mirror of Erised hadn't been driven by malevolent intent. If the proportions of the alchemical circles' powers were altered, this enchanted mirror could easily transform into a deadly weapon, capable of creating illusions so compelling they could permanently trap someone's mind.
"This has been an enlightening experience," Lynn remarked with a smile.
Having successfully deconstructed the alchemical circles within the Mirror of Erised, he categorized its runes into three functions: Legilimency, Illusion, and Confusion.
Just as Lynn was about to leave the abandoned classroom, he paused. Turning back to the Mirror of Erised, he smirked.
"Wait a moment. If this Mirror of Erised is meant to protect the Philosopher's Stone, maybe I can add something extra to it," Lynn said, a sly grin spreading across his face.
During his analysis of the alchemical circles, he had also discovered a storage circle capable of preserving objects and retrieving them under specific conditions.
This storage circle was unique: it could freeze the state of stored objects and set precise conditions for their retrieval.
For example, Professor Dumbledore had placed the Philosopher's Stone in the mirror and established the condition that only those who desired the Stone without intending to use it could retrieve it.
With a sinister chuckle, Lynn stepped forward, retrieving a Mk2 grenade from his pocket. He pulled the pin and carefully placed it inside the Mirror of Erised.
"Set the retrieval condition so that only those who seek the Philosopher's Stone with the intent to use it can extract this Mk2 grenade," Lynn said coldly, his voice decisive.
Having completed the modifications, Lynn left the abandoned classroom with a spring in his step.
Not long after he left, Professor Dumbledore appeared once again at the classroom door. Approaching the Mirror of Erised, he reached out to move it.
However, as his hand touched the mirror, his expression shifted, and a bemused smile crossed his face.
