Chapter 16: The Past That Cannot Be Recalled
Shelves filled with delicious and juicy candies lined the walls, including large chunks of creamy almond toffee, bright pink coconut sherbet, honey-colored caramel, and hundreds of neatly arranged chocolates. There was a tub of Bibi's multicolored jelly beans and another filled with sizzling sugar bees.
On the opposite wall, there were "special effects" candies, such as the Super Chuibao Bubble Gum, which filled the room with bellflower-colored bubbles lasting several days; the strange, crunchy, brittle Fluffy Tooth Mints; the tiny black pepper imps that spit fire after being eaten; the icy mice that made the eater's teeth chatter; frog-shaped peppermint ice cream that jumped in the stomach; feather-crisp candy made of spun sugar; explosive gummies, and more.
Of course, Lynn couldn't truly appreciate these so-called special effects candies.
Perhaps only prank-loving twins like the Weasleys would enjoy such candies. After all, they had invented many prank products themselves.
With this in mind, Lynn grabbed two portions of each special effects candy, planning to give them to the Weasley twins. After picking out some snacks for himself, Lynn quickly left Honeydukes to meet Fred and George.
"Here, I got these for you," Lynn said, handing the large bag of special effects candies to Fred and George.
Fred and George were surprised to receive such a generous gift. These special effects candies would serve as excellent reference material for their prank product research!
Originally, they had planned to visit Zuko's Joke Shop to buy some prank items for research. The reason they hadn't come to Honeydukes for these candies was not just because Zuko's specialized in prank items but also because they couldn't afford too many Honeydukes treats.
This was evident from the fact that they could only eat the sandwiches Mrs. Weasley had packed for them on the train, reluctant to spend money on snacks.
After hearing about their plans to visit Hogsmeade, Lynn asked, "So, are you still planning to go to Zuko's Joke Shop?"
Fred nodded. "Of course! Even if we don't buy much else, we still need to get some dungbombs. We've been working on enhancing their potency, but we've run out of the ones we have."
Lynn placed their snacks into the magically expanded bag and cheerfully walked with them toward Zuko's Joke Shop.
Hogsmeade truly was the largest magical village in the British wizarding world. The bustling streets rivaled the main streets of the Muggle world, with witches and wizards chatting happily as they carried their purchases.
Zuko's Joke Shop wasn't far from Honeydukes, and they reached it quickly.
The twins used their hard-earned pocket money to buy a batch of dungbombs, while Lynn picked up a self-writing quill from a nearby stationery shop.
"Shall we grab a drink at The Three Broomsticks?" Fred suggested.
Lynn and George agreed.
The interior of The Three Broomsticks was clean, spacious, and welcoming—much nicer than The Leaky Cauldron, where Lynn had been before.
Madam Rosmerta, the bar's owner, was charming and elegant. Many young wizards had harbored crushes on her during their school days, according to the original books.
"Good afternoon, Madam Rosmerta! Three butterbeers, please!" Fred greeted her cheerfully.
Madam Rosmerta smiled, her gaze shifting to Lynn. "Fred, George, I didn't expect you to bring along a first-year. Who's this young Slytherin wizard?"
Lynn extended his hand. "Lynn Rohr. Pleasure to meet you, Madam."
After introductions, Madam Rosmerta asked them to find a seat. The three sat by the window near the fireplace.
A few minutes later, steaming mugs of frothy butterbeer arrived at their table.
"Cheers!"
The three clinked their mugs and took hearty sips.
Lynn found that butterbeer wasn't real beer but a sweet, warming beverage. Every sip seemed to fill him with comforting warmth.
Just as they finished their butterbeer and were about to leave, George stopped them suddenly. "Wait, look! That's Professor Green!"
Following George's gaze, Lynn saw Professor Green, whom he had met the day before, entering the bar. He looked entirely different from his usual demeanor at Hogwarts—somber and shrouded in a pale blue gloom.
"Five shots of Firewhisky," the professor said calmly, sitting in the bar's darkest corner.
When the drinks arrived, Professor Green took a large gulp. Lynn could see his eyes were wet, making it clear he wasn't drinking for pleasure but to drown his sorrows.
At that moment, Madam Rosmerta approached them. Seeing their puzzled expressions, she sighed. "Alas, Professor Green bottles up all his troubles to teach you in the best possible condition. I fear he only allows himself to release those burdens here."
Lynn hesitated before asking, "Madam Rosmerta, does Professor Green have a difficult past?"
Madam Rosmerta replied, "Yes, but it's not my place to share his story. It's his private matter."
Lynn nodded, deciding not to press further. Instead, they quietly waited for Professor Green to leave before returning to Hogwarts with the Weasley twins.
The reason they waited was likely because they knew the professor wouldn't want his students to see him in such a state.
On the way back, the three walked in silence until they reached the statue of the one-eyed witch and entered the castle.
"Professor Green looked really frightening just now. It's hard to imagine someone so kind in class has such a side," George murmured.
Fred added, "Maybe he's dealing with something serious. But if even Professor Green can't solve it, how can we help?"
Lynn placed a hand on their shoulders. "Don't tell anyone about this. The best way we can help him is by not causing him more trouble."
"Of course, mate!"
"We'll take it to the grave..."
"—and expel it along with our dungbombs!"
"...Then forget it entirely!"
The Weasley twins returned to their usual playful selves, their harmony bringing some levity to the situation.
