Chapter 11: Chapter 11: The Second Murder Notice
London, Late at Night
On the crisscrossing roads, the black Volkswagen car was driving quickly. Victor Black didn't drive directly to David Smith's home but stopped at an abandoned construction site on the way.
After getting out of the car, he looked around and found a loose cement brick. Then, he reached into his bosom and took out an old-fashioned Nokia mobile phone, placing it in the gap under the brick. After finishing all this, he got back into the car and continued driving towards David Smith's home.
At around eleven o'clock, Victor arrived at the urban village in the East District. But this time, he didn't drive in directly. Instead, he parked the car in the distance and walked there. Ten minutes later, he hid in a corner dozens of meters away from David Smith's house.
He roughly simulated the whole process in his mind and reviewed all his actions. After confirming that there were no flaws, he took out the voice changer.
The Office of the Serious Crime Unit of Scotland Yard
Since the last meeting, everyone felt extremely stressed. Catching the "Ghost" seemed impossible. From start to finish, except for a mobile phone, there were no other clues to investigate. And the fingerprint and material identification results from the mobile phone, so far, were almost useless. Everyone knew clearly that there was no need to waste time on the "Ghost"; it was just a futile effort.
So, even though according to the regulations, Margaret Wilson had already been released, everyone's attention was still on Margaret, and they almost investigated her thoroughly.
First of all, the police conducted an extremely detailed investigation into Margaret's interpersonal relationships and recent communication records. The result was as Sebastian expected; there were no abnormalities.
Secondly, they investigated whether Margaret was ill and whether the amount of penicillin she purchased exceeded the standard, but still found nothing.
Finally, Sebastian proposed that the only possibility to obtain evidence to convict Margaret was to find evidence of her privately disposing of the penicillin.
Indeed, if Margaret wanted to collect the penicillin, she definitely needed a tool. As long as they found that tool, they would have the evidence. But unfortunately, even though the police turned the villa upside down, they still couldn't find anything.
Of course, they couldn't find it. The tool Margaret used to collect the penicillin was a small box made of sugar. That night, after she used up the penicillin, she ate the small box. This was also a clever move. At least, Sebastian didn't think of it, and even if he did, it was useless because the evidence had been completely destroyed as it was eaten.
The entire police force worked day and night for a week but achieved nothing. The investigation was at an impasse, and everyone felt physically and mentally exhausted.
At this moment, in the large conference room, everyone had dark circles under their eyes and looked haggard.
"What are you all looking so dejected for? There is no such thing as a perfect crime in this world. Pull yourselves together and think carefully. There must be something we've overlooked," James Morrison loudly encouraged everyone.
Just then, Emily rushed into the conference room, looking terrified, "James, the 'Ghost' is calling again!"
James was stunned for a moment and then perked up, "Connect it immediately!"
"It has already been transferred!"
Sure enough, before the words were even finished, the landline in the conference room rang. James immediately picked it up.
"James, how have you been recently?"
"What on earth do you want?"
"Me? I'm just playing a game of chess. To get back to the point, David Smith, male, 47 years old, lives at No. 47 Whitechapel Road, East District. I'm going to kill him. Oh, this time you don't have much time. I will take action within an hour. You need to hurry up. A new game begins. This is a race against time. Guess who will win?"
"Ghost, I swear! I will catch you with my own hands..." Before James could finish his angry roar, the phone call was cut off.
At this moment, James was extremely angry. This was a blatant insult to the police. However, he was never a person who would be influenced by emotions, even though he seemed hot-tempered.
So, he immediately gave an order, "All field agents, move out immediately!"
Everyone knew the seriousness of the matter and didn't hesitate for a moment. They stood up and ran.
After everyone left, James walked out quickly and turned to Sebastian in the corner, saying seriously, "I'll leave this place to you."
Sebastian nodded, "Go ahead, but don't have too high hopes. That David Smith is most likely doomed."
James ignored Sebastian's nonsense and immediately ran out of the conference room.
After everyone had left, Sebastian's eyes were full of excitement. He liked challenges. So, he immediately gave a series of orders.
"Locate the signal source of the 'Ghost's' phone call. Hurry up!"
"Check the vehicles registered under David Smith's name. Also, be quick!"
"Send someone to communicate with the Ministry of Transport. I want to have control over all road surveillance tonight!"
"Finally, there's an even more urgent matter. Emily, get me a cup of coffee!"
After arranging all the matters, Sebastian leaned comfortably back in his chair, closed his eyes, tapped his fingers on the table continuously, and waited silently.
No. 47 Whitechapel Road, East District, London
In this world, there is such a group of people.
They were spoiled by their parents since childhood, didn't study hard, and fooled around all day long, getting involved in fights, brawls, and petty theft. When they grew up, they still didn't work hard and idled around all day, living off their parents' hard-earned money. They were also very vain, hot-tempered, and stupid. Even after getting married, they didn't care about their wives, children, or the elderly, and still went their own way, being lazy, slippery, and having no sense of responsibility or morality.
Such people can be regarded as the virus of society, a typical example of being disliked by everyone. If they don't have the opportunity, they will probably just do some minor bad deeds in their whole life. But if they get the chance, they will also commit serious crimes.
David Smith was exactly such a person.
When he was young, he was a hooligan. Although he was annoying, he still had a little bit of kindness left and didn't do anything extremely heinous. But twenty years ago, because he owed gambling debts and urgently needed money, on an impulse, he took on a shady job that involved harming someone's life. And on that night, he accidentally killed an old lady.
After that, he got a large sum of money, not only paying off his debts but also getting married and having a child. Of course, for someone like him, divorce was inevitable, and his wife took the child away. Since then, he had been living off the rent of the shops he had bought. There was no way he would go to work. Firstly, he was lazy, and secondly, he was also afraid that what he had done twenty years ago would be discovered.
So, over the years, he spent his days playing cards, sleeping, wandering around, and playing games at home, and his life was quite comfortable. And he planned to live like this for the rest of his life. As for his parents and children, sorry, they were never in his considerations.
Today, he was at home playing games as usual. In fact, he really wanted to find a call girl, but he didn't have the money, so he could only endure it and wait until the rent arrived next month.
"Damn it, a bunch of idiots!" Looking at the words "Game Over" on his phone, he looked extremely annoyed, cursed angrily, and reached out to grab the cigarette beside him.
Just then, his phone rang.
He looked at the caller ID and saw that it was an unknown number. Without thinking, he directly hung up.
As soon as he hung up, the phone rang again.
"Damn it, who is it?" he said as he answered the phone.
