Chapter 4
### Kite was at a loss for words for a moment.
“Uh, boss. Did we really destroy that mausoleum?”
It wasn’t just destroyed. Lantus had taken out all the coffins inside, displayed them in the air, and burned them.
The priests had wailed and screamed, some even fainting at the sight.
“Destroyed or not, when you hold a knife to their necks, they do whatever you say. What’s so important about the grudge of a long-rotted corpse anyway?”
“It probably wasn’t rotted. They must have preserved it, hence the uproar.”
“Just bring them here. I’m curious if they value their ashes over their lives.”
Lantus’s twisted smile deepened.
“Surely one of them would prefer to live in shame than die.”
“Hahaha. How many are you planning to break?”
Kite laughed awkwardly. You could never tell who the real villain was just by listening to him.
“Alright. I’ll just use magic to heal slowly…”
Magic, unlike divine power, can heal its own body.
Though not very effectively.
Kite continued pressing on a sore spot while he talked.
“By the way, about that kid. How about taking me with you when you go?”
“Why would you come?”
“Honestly, you can’t tell what kind of kid they are just by their appearance. They could be pretending to be nice but be rotten inside.”
Lantus was weak to children and the weak. When facing strong enemies like the Holy Kingdom, he was utterly ruthless.
‘Probably because of that incident long ago,’ Kite thought.
Lantus looked at him with disdain.
“So you think I got fooled by that kid? Have you forgotten who I am?”
“Huh?”
“That child hides malice from me?”
“Oh.”
Realizing his mistake, Kite chuckled.
“My apologies. Indeed, if that kid had any ill intentions, you would have known right away.”
The eye that sees through malice.
Another name and ability of Lantus.
He was more sensitive to human malice than anyone else. Perhaps that’s why he despised the Holy Kingdom so much.
He could sense their foul inner workings better than anyone.
Lantus sighed softly.
“Of course, I checked. There wasn’t an ounce of malice. It was a field of flowers.”
Right after his magic seal was lifted, Lantus had used his ability on Yeo-ul.
He hadn’t let his guard down, despite the nagging.
And the result?
He was momentarily speechless.
Yeo-ul had no trace of malice.
More than that, she was full of an immense liking for him.
‘As if she was meeting someone she’s been longing to see.’
At first, he was puzzled by her one-sided affection, but recalling her dreams made sense.
‘She must have been naive enough to think the world was full of people like her. That’s why she followed every adult she met.’
Even in this dirty world, sometimes there are people like that child.
Innocent fools who believe that if you do good, good will come back to you.
Unfortunately, their endings are often the same.
The world is harsher than they expect, and the more innocent and good they are, the deeper their wounds.
That’s why he kept thinking about her.
“Alright. Given the circumstances, I’ll allow an early leave.”
“I never needed your permission from the start. And stop saying weird things like leaving early.”
“As long as we understand each other. By the way, there’s something I need you to check before you go.”
Kite hesitated before taking out a small stone from his pocket.
“Actually, Andante told me to give this to you earlier…?”
Lantus’s expression hardened as he glanced at the stone.
The faintly glowing red stone made his heart sink.
“You don’t mean…?”
“Yes. A wanderer has appeared. The movement of the stars confirms it.”
A wanderer.
Someone who crossed over from another world.
Lantus grabbed the stone roughly and shouted.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner!”
“Well, I thought if I told you earlier, you might kill those guys…”
“Kite!”
Seeing Lantus’s anger, Kite mumbled.
“We don’t even know where the wanderer is right now. You can’t go looking for them immediately, and I thought it would just upset you…”
“……”
“You hate seeing wanderers suffer…”
Lantus glared at Kite as if he would devour him. Kite shrank back and said.
“Maybe I should just bang my head here…?”
Lantus ground his teeth in frustration.
Lantus had another name, one not widely known.
The Guide of Wanderers.
His role was to help wanderers from another world adapt to this one.
This wasn’t the first time he had encountered a wanderer.
Today marked the second time.
Over a decade ago, when Lantus was still a boy, a wanderer appeared.
And he lost that wanderer right before his eyes.
It was his first failure and an unforgettable scar.
He still remembered the desperate eyes of the wanderer he couldn’t save.
“Maybe you should think positively. After all, they have abilities we don’t.”
Kite stammered.
“They can bring things from their world… special abilities… they might help us…”
“Shut up, Kite.”
Lantus’s voice was icy. Kite flinched.
“Stop thinking about using unfortunate people.”
Seven wanderers had come to this world over the millennia.
Except for two, all met the worst ends.
They went mad, ended their own lives, fell into corruption, or had their souls torn apart.
None could accept this world, believing it was a dream and eventually breaking down.
It’s understandable.
Losing everything overnight and being dragged into a strange world, how could anyone stay sane?
Believing it was a dream was the best they could do.
Yet, they eventually had to accept reality. Lantus had used his guiding power on the first wanderer.
A guide’s power makes the wanderer realize this is real.
Being the strongest guide ever, the effect was certain.
The wanderer finally accepted this world.
But the result…
Looking at the search stone, Lantus’s face twisted.
‘Damn it.’
Thinking he might lose another wanderer pained him. And imagining the wanderer suffering alone in a strange world made him feel suffocated.
“Do we have a general location? Where are they?”
“In the Holy Kingdom of Amos… but Amos is vast. We’re in Amos right now.”
Lantus closed his eyes tightly.
In his clenched fist, the search stone glowed faintly.
* * *
“Damn brat. Crying to save your mom, and after the funeral, you disappear?”
“Ugh!”
The one who found Yeo-ul was a lower priest named Hansen. He threw her into a deserted alley and yelled.
“Is it my fault your mom died from the treatment? You need to pay if you got treated!”
“……”
“If you don’t have money, become a slave, or a test subject! How dare you try to swindle the Holy Kingdom’s money! Do you want to die?”
Yeo-ul’s face turned pale.
Not because she was scared of him, but because his words were too cruel for a child.
If it weren’t for her, a real child would have heard those words.
‘And this child seems to have just lost her mother!’
Old memories resurfaced, making her heart pound.
The day her brother died.
「Yeo-ul, Professor Seo is severely injured. We need your consent for surgery immediately.」
「I’m so sorry, Yeo-ul. We couldn’t do it… We’ll guard your brother’s way to the end.」
Even recalling it made her heart sink, as if the world was collapsing.
The wound was still fresh in Yeo-ul’s heart.
She took deep breaths to calm herself.
If money was the issue, she could solve it. She had won 32 billion in the lottery. Once she claimed it, she could easily pay off the debt.
Even if the debt was larger than the winnings, she could earn more money.
“I don’t know how much the debt is, but if you give me a few days, I can pay it. So, ugh.”
As she tried to get up, a sharp pain shot through her left ankle.
She must have sprained it while being dragged here.
