Chapter 18
“First of all, you know that my brother is a successor and a guide for wanderers, right?”
“Yes, I know.”
“Those two roles are actually a set. Only a successor has the ability to guide a wanderer from another world, so naturally, the successor becomes the guide.”
“Because a successor can use all the magic in this world?”
“Exactly. You remember well.”
Kite smiled proudly and continued.
“Anyway, my brother is both a successor and a guide, but he also happens to be the guardian of Wizardian. These roles are somewhat connected, but… I’ll explain the complexities later.”
Kite waved his hand dismissively and took a sip of his drink before continuing.
“A guardian, as the name implies, is someone who protects the people of their country. They’re like a shield.”
“A shield…?”
“For example, let’s say I’m captured and taken to Amos. Someone might suggest abandoning me to protect Wizardian. It’s a perfectly rational decision. If the roles were reversed, I’d probably say the same.”
Yeo-ul nodded slightly. It was a painful but understandable choice.
“But my brother would be different. As a guardian, he would try to save me alone, even if it meant his body would be shattered.”
Kite’s intense gaze met Yeo-ul’s.
“Even if it meant his body would be broken to pieces.”
“……!”
“So, a guardian is someone who will definitely help you, even if the whole world abandons you. This applies not only to me but to all the wizards of Wizardian.”
Kite declared in a low voice before continuing.
“That’s why it’s only natural for us to support our guardian. In the long run, it’s for our own good.”
Yeo-ul’s fingers trembled slightly as she held Kite’s hand. She couldn’t fully understand the blind devotion to their guardian, but she could see how strong their bond was, with Lantus at the center.
It also helped her understand why the wizards stood united against the Holy Kingdom.
Yeo-ul cautiously asked.
“So, the reason you all willingly accept the dangerous spell is…”
“Because my brother, the guardian, wants to protect you most of all. Someone might torture me to find out about you, so we have to be prepared.”
Kite chuckled, trying to lighten the mood, but Yeo-ul couldn’t relax.
She felt responsible.
‘Can I live up to everyone’s sacrifices?’
Regardless of the reason, the wizards had and would continue to bear the dangerous spell for Yeo-ul’s safety.
Yeo-ul hoped to repay their risk with her own efforts.
With this small resolve, Yeo-ul asked.
“So there are guardians in other countries too?”
According to the novel, there were six guardians on this continent.
The protagonist had relationships with three of them.
Lantus, the guardian of Wizardian.
Gladius, the sword king and guardian of the swordsmen’s country, Rodia.
Cadenburgh, the pirate king who ruled the seas.
The remaining three countries, the Fatima Empire, the beastmen’s country of Nouvelune, and the Holy Kingdom of Amos, had guardians that didn’t appear in the story.
“Yes. There are six guardians in total. One of them is someone you know very well.”
Kite’s smile turned playful.
“Me?”
“The guardian of Fatima.”
“Oh, no way.”
“Yes. Princess Isolde is the guardian of Fatima.”
“I see.”
Yeo-ul wondered if the reason Lantus and Isolde had broken up was that they were both guardians of their respective countries.
It seemed likely, but she decided not to press Kite further. Such personal matters should be asked directly to Lantus.
Besides, it was clear from their previous encounter that Lantus still had feelings for Princess Isolde, despite his denial.
So Yeo-ul asked another question.
“Then who is the guardian of the beastmen’s country, Nouvelune?”
Kite shook his head.
“That, we don’t know. Almost no one knows. The beastmen hardly interact with humans.”
“I see.”
Yeo-ul thought of Michael, the mysterious priest whose life she had saved before leaving Amos.
‘Michael would know who the guardian of Nouvelune is, right?’
It’s unlikely that Michael himself was the guardian. A guardian wouldn’t hide in Amos, and his unpredictable behavior didn’t match the role.
‘But then again, Lantus doesn’t act like a typical guardian either.’
Yeo-ul chuckled softly at the thought, but then she froze.
She had suddenly remembered a crucial detail she had forgotten.
“Hic.”
Yeo-ul gasped, clutching her head.
“Miss Yeo-ul? What’s wrong?”
Yeo-ul didn’t have the luxury to answer Kite’s question.
Because she remembered.
‘Michael’s gruesome end! I forgot about that!’
Michael was destined to be killed in a few years.
‘I thought it was just a dream back then!’
But this wasn’t a dream. It was reality.
Which meant Michael’s brutal death would happen in reality too!
* * *
Meanwhile.
While Yeo-ul was fretting over Michael’s future.
“Lantus! You crazy bastard!”
Michael ignored the high priest’s furious rant and counted the circle patterns on the floor.
“After setting fire to another country’s shrine, you should have gone straight back to your own country. Instead, you used teleportation magic dozens of times just to buy lottery tickets?”
The high priest was the same one who had collapsed a few days ago due to Liriana.
Already fuming from the previous verbal abuse, the fact that Lantus and his followers had mocked the Holy Kingdom with lottery tickets drove him to the edge.
There was no way he could speak calmly.
And for now, he had no way to retaliate against Lantus.
“To ignore that madman and leave him alone! Everyone must be insane to suggest that!”
Lantus, known as the Mad Dog.
He was the greatest nuisance to the Holy Kingdom.
He never forgot a grudge and always saw his plans for revenge through to the end.
This time was no different, triggered by the Holy Kingdom forcibly recalling a healing priest from Wizardian.
At the meeting of high priests that morning, it was decided to leave Lantus alone for a while.
No one wanted to see the Mad Dog go on a rampage again.
The ruler of the Holy Kingdom, the Holy Emperor, couldn’t move easily for the time being, making the decision easier.
Of course, some hardliners argued that all wizards, including Lantus, should be killed, but it was to no avail.
The high priest glared at Michael.
“Michael, what do you think? Do you think we should leave Lantus alone too?”
Michael, who had been counting the patterns, slowly raised his gaze.
“Of course not.”
He hesitated for a moment, trying to remember the high priest’s name.
‘Well, it doesn’t matter.’
Living as a priest, hiding the fact that he was a beastman, Michael had learned two things.
First, if you don’t know someone’s name, call them respectful, great, or wise.
Today, he chose respect.
“Your esteemed highness is absolutely right.”
“I knew you were sensible!”
The high priest, finally calmed a bit, nodded with satisfaction and began berating the other priests again.
“Idiots. Ignoring Lantus is better? That’s just a nice way of saying we’ll continue to be led around by him!”
Michael’s lips curved into a faint, mocking smile.
‘Fool. You don’t even realize the world is on the brink of destruction and yet you talk like that.’
The second truth Michael learned.
This Holy Kingdom was full of idiots.
They couldn’t even imagine that the end of the world was approaching silently.
Michael had come to the Holy Kingdom to prevent the world’s destruction.
A year ago, a prophecy had come down in Nouvelune, the land of beastmen.
– In the heart of the black sun, the shadow of destruction begins to spread. But the seed to prevent disaster also appears. The only way for everyone to survive is for that seed to bloom.
The prophecy was vague but couldn’t be ignored.
Just as animals are the first to sense natural disasters like earthquakes or tsunamis, Nouvelune’s prophets were unmatched in predicting calamities.
The elders of Nouvelune had interpreted the prophecy as follows:
“In the Holy Kingdom of Amos, something has begun that will bring about the end of the world. However, the one who can prevent this disaster will also appear in the Holy Kingdom. We must find this person and protect them until their ability blooms.”
So, Michael had become a priest in the Holy Kingdom of Amos.
To find the cause of the impending doom.
And to find the world’s savior who would someday appear in the Holy Kingdom.
Others had tried to dissuade him, saying he didn’t need to go himself, but he ignored them.
If the prophecy were true, everyone in Nouvelune would die.
Considering the gravity of the situation, it was right for him to act.
Protecting the people of Nouvelune by any means necessary was his duty as their guardian.
