Chapter 16
“Let’s see. You got engaged just before your coming-of-age ceremony, so it’s been over ten years. I played the role of a love messenger back then, you know. Like delivering the size for the engagement ring.”
Kite placed a hand on his chest and smiled demurely.
“It was quite a special memory for me too.”
“Hey, you better shut your mouth right now!”
Lantus, shouting, rushed at Kite but froze when he felt a chilling sensation behind him. He turned quickly to the magic circle.
He gasped.
“Damn it, you crazy idiot! You’ve disrupted the spell!”
Lantus hastily began to repair the magic circle. The spell was large and complex, leaving him no time to deal with Kite.
Lantus had decided to part ways with Yeo-ul here. He thought it best to send her to Wizardian while he sought advice from Medeia. Given that Yeo-ul’s brother’s knowledge might be dispersing at this very moment, it was a necessary decision.
However, even for someone like Lantus, it required complex preparations.
He was, after all, about to intrude into a dragon’s territory without an appointment. He had to be ready for any danger.
Additionally, he needed to prepare the magic to safely transport Yeo-ul to Wizardian.
Handling both spells simultaneously meant he had no attention to spare for anything else.
Knowing all this, Kite couldn’t miss the opportunity.
Though he often teased Lantus, such a blatant chance to mock him was rare.
Even Yeo-ul seemed curious about Lantus’s love life, her bright eyes peeking over her hand covering her mouth.
With all calculations done, Kite continued nonchalantly.
“You two were pretty special to each other, promising to marry right after the coming-of-age ceremony. But things got complicated. You could say they were a star-crossed couple.”
“Star-crossed couple?”
Yeo-ul couldn’t help but feel curious, even though she felt a bit sorry for Lantus. She whispered to Kite, glancing at Lantus concentrating on the magic circle.
“Didn’t Princess Isolde break it off first? That’s what Lantus said…”
Kite waved his hand dismissively.
“No, that’s not how it was. It wasn’t that either of them lost interest. There wasn’t anyone who was dumped. The situation around them was just too bad. They were too young to overcome it all. Lantus decided to end it to prevent further hurt.”
“I see…”
Yeo-ul felt a pang of sadness, thinking about Lantus’s unfortunate past.
“After they broke up, they both cried a lot, holding on to me, their love messenger. I had to drink twice as much to handle it.”
Kite looked wistfully into the distance.
“Ah, the memories of a bittersweet first love.”
“Bitter my foot!”
Lantus, having finished the magic circle with superhuman speed, flew at Kite and grabbed him by the collar.
He hurriedly spoke to Yeo-ul.
“Yeo-ul, don’t misunderstand. It’s all in the past, and we’ve moved on. Understand?”
Then he started shaking Kite by the collar.
“Hey, you crazy idiot! Why are you dragging me into this? Do you want to die?”
“Come on, you were engaged but didn’t get married. It’s been nearly ten years since the engagement.”
Kite, unfazed, shrugged.
Knowing he was the only one to safely escort Yeo-ul to Wizardian, he was confident Lantus couldn’t do more than this.
The thought of possible retaliation from Lantus later on worried him, but he decided to leave that to his future self.
“Let’s see. It’s been seven years since the crown prince and princess died, so it’s been exactly nine years since the engagement. If they haven’t married yet, there must be a problem, right?”
“Mind your own business, you crazy idiot!”
“Maybe they’re stuck in a loveless engagement, or they each have other lovers. If they’re a show window couple, there’s no chance of you getting back with her.”
“What kind of crazy talk is that about people who are still engaged!”
“Now that you mention it, I was really surprised when they announced the engagement. Even for a political marriage, she was a bit much, right?”
Kite, still being shaken, tilted his head.
“Did she lower her standards because of the shock from being dumped by you?”
“What kind of nonsense is this?”
Lantus looked like he was about to have a stroke thanks to Kite’s endless rambling.
He knew Kite was crazy, but he hadn’t realized he was this insane.
“Have you lost all fear or sense? Aren’t you afraid of being charged with defamation of royalty?”
“What does it matter? There’s no Fátima royalty here.”
“Does it have to be directly heard by royalty to be defamation?”
“You can’t report me anyway. But if you want to use it as an excuse to have a fateful reunion with the princess, I can understand that.”
At Kite’s smooth talk, Lantus closed his eyes tightly.
He felt a deep sympathy for the high priest who had collapsed a few days ago at the shrine, staggering back as he clutched his forehead in regret.
“Why did I feel sorry for this guy and take him in? I should have left him to starve.”
Kite, unaffected, continued.
“Even if you had left me, I would have found a way to stick around. Given that I’m still here, I probably wouldn’t have left.”
“Get out now, then!”
“Who’s going to take Miss Yeo-ul to Wizardian? Liriana’s not here. Are you going to call Lady Andante?”
“Anyone would be better than you. Even that priest Michael would be better!”
“Pfft.”
Both Lantus and Kite turned their gazes to Yeo-ul, who had burst out laughing, unable to hold back.
She felt bad for Lantus, but their back-and-forth was undeniably funny.
Lantus, seeing Yeo-ul laugh, was momentarily surprised but then softened into a smile, forgetting his anger.
“It was worth picking up that crazy guy.”
“Indeed.”
After a warm look at Yeo-ul, Lantus glared at Kite.
“Take good care of Yeo-ul. If I come back and find anything lacking, I’ll send you back to your family.”
“Absolutely.”
Kite grinned.
Lantus knelt down in front of Yeo-ul to look her in the eyes.
“Eat well, and if that crazy guy says something stupid, ask Liriana for help. No one can stand against her when she decides something. She even knocked out the high priest at the shrine.”
“Liriana did?”
“Yes, she did.”
Yeo-ul, unaware that the “knockout” was with words and not magic, simply thought Liriana was amazing.
Anyway, it was time to go.
Both magic circles were complete.
Lantus spread his arms and playfully said,
“Come here, my precious little wanderer. Give me a hug before you go.”
Yeo-ul giggled and hugged Lantus’s neck.
Feeling her tightly in his arms, his heart sank a bit.
It wasn’t just because she reminded him of her brother.
He knew that, as her guardian, he would do anything to protect her.
It was strange.
To trust someone so deeply after only a few days.
“Lantus.”
“Yes?”
“I’ll eat well, play without worries, and be a good child. So…”
Yeo-ul hesitated before whispering.
“I hope you come back soon too.”
A drawn smile appeared on his face.
“I will.”
After their final farewell, Lantus stood up.
Kite picked Yeo-ul up and grinned.
“We’ll be waiting, so don’t forget to bring a present when you come back.”
“You really just talk, don’t you? Why would I bring a gift for you?”
“I’m the most obedient elder you have. And also…”
Kite glanced at Yeo-ul before continuing.
“Take it easy. Seriously.”
He held back from saying more since Yeo-ul was listening.
Lantus’s journey would be far more dangerous than she knew.
Lantus chuckled.
“I’ll take care of myself. You take care of Yeo-ul.”
