The Former Marine

Chapter 6: Chapter 6: The Voice Between Nations

After his impressive performance in his first few missions with Alpha Team, Rogan decided to expand his skills. He knew that to be an elite operator, he needed not only physical strength and strategy, but also cultural and linguistic knowledge, especially considering the types of missions MARSOC was involved in. An operator who understood the local language had the ability to do more than follow orders; he could gather vital intelligence and navigate enemy territory more easily.

Always focused on improving, Derek chose to learn Pashto, one of the main languages spoken in Afghanistan. He spent hours outside of duty studying, listening to recorded dialogues and learning the nuances of the language. His dedication was remarkable, and his teammates often joked that he was becoming a true "war polyglot."

One day, while studying in his barracks, Captain Rawlings walked in. He regarded Derek with a curious look before speaking. "Studying Pashto, Rogan?"

Derek nodded, removing his headphones. "Yes, sir. I thought it would be useful for some of our upcoming operations."

Rawlings smiled, clearly impressed. "You don't waste time, do you? This will stand you in good stead. I'm sure it will come in handy sooner than you think."

A few months later, Derek had the opportunity to put his knowledge to use. Alpha Team was assigned to a series of missions in Afghanistan, where their ability to speak Pashto proved invaluable. The main mission involved infiltrating a small village in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, where insurgent leaders were meeting to plan attacks on coalition forces.

The team landed at night, moving silently across the mountain slopes. The stars shone brightly in the sky above as they closed in on their target. Derek, walking alongside Miller, felt his adrenaline rising, but he maintained his characteristic calm. He knew he would play a crucial role in communicating with the locals to obtain information. As they reached the village, Rawlings motioned for Derek to move forward.

"Rogan, you'll lead this approach. We need to speak with the village chief and find out where the insurgents are hiding."

Derek nodded and moved forward with careful steps, following two other operators. As they approached the village chief's house, an elderly man came out to meet them, a wary expression on his face. Derek immediately began a conversation in Pashto, trying to reassure him.

"Assalaamu alaikum," Derek said, the greeting flowing naturally from his lips.

The man stopped and looked at Derek, surprised to hear a foreigner speaking his language. "Wa alaikum assalam," he replied cautiously. "Who are you?"

"We are friends. We come in peace, we just want to talk," Derek continued in Pashto, keeping his tone calm and respectful. "We need information about some men who are putting your village at risk. We want to help you."

The village chief glanced at the other operators for a moment before returning his gaze to Derek. Something about the way Derek spoke perhaps the genuine tone or the effort he was making to connect with the local culture seemed to convince the man. He motioned them inside. Inside the house, lit only by a dim bulb, Derek led the conversation, translating for Rawlings as he learned valuable information.

The village chief revealed that the insurgents were hiding in a nearby cave, but he also warned them that they were heavily armed and protected.

"Thank you," Derek said, bowing his head slightly in respect. "We promise we won't harm your village."

As they stepped outside, Rawlings placed a hand on Derek's shoulder.

"You just saved us from a possible ambush, Rogan. Good job."

Derek nodded, keeping his expression serious. He knew the real challenge was yet to come. Hours later, Alpha Team prepared to attack the cave where the insurgents were hiding. They moved in formation, with Derek and Miller in the lead.

The path was narrow and winding, surrounded by steep cliffs, making it dangerous to advance. Derek, with his heightened senses, kept an eye out for any suspicious movements.

Suddenly, a subtle sound caught his attention hurried footsteps coming from a side trail. He signaled for the team to stop and quickly found cover behind a rock. Minutes later, a group of insurgents appeared on the trail, seemingly unaware of Alpha Team's presence.

Derek gave a quick signal to Miller and the others. In a coordinated move, they advanced and neutralized the insurgents before they could alert their comrades. Derek, once again, proved his worth, demonstrating calm and precision under pressure.

They continued their advance and finally reached the cave entrance. Rawlings signaled for them to split into two teams. Derek was assigned to lead the team that would enter first. He knew that once inside, hand-to-hand combat would be inevitable.

The tension was palpable as they approached the dark entrance. Derek took a deep breath and signaled for his team to advance. As they entered, gunfire ricocheted off the rock walls. Derek ducked, returning fire with precision as he led his team to safer cover.

The fighting was intense but brief. Thanks to Derek's leadership and the team's coordination, they were able to neutralize all of the insurgents and secure the area. When the dust finally settled, Rawlings contacted command to confirm the success of the operation.

"Mission accomplished," Rawlings said, satisfaction evident on his face. "Good job, guys. Rogan, your language skills were crucial to the success of this mission. I don't know what it would have been like without you."

Derek simply nodded, humbled by the compliment. He knew that, despite everything, it was just another part of the job he had signed up to do.

Over the next few months, Derek's ability to speak Pashto continued to be a strategic asset. He was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, where he often served as a liaison between American forces and the local populations. His respect for the people and his dedication to learning about their cultures made him a respected figure not only within MARSOC, but also among the local communities where they operated.

On one such mission in Iraq, while speaking with a tribal leader to secure cooperation on a counterinsurgent mission, the older man said something that has stuck with Derek for a long time.

"You speak our language and respect our traditions. It shows that you see us as equals, not enemies. Many come here and treat our words as empty air, but you listen."

Derek smiled, feeling the weight of the words. "I believe that in order to achieve peace, we must understand each other."

When his tour in Iraq ended, Derek knew that his skills were not limited to the battlefield. He was becoming a bridge between different worlds, and that was one of the most powerful weapons he could carry.

With his confidence renewed, Derek continued to excel, knowing that by mastering both the art of war and human understanding, he was on the right path to becoming one of the best operators MARSOC had ever seen.
