Chapter 49: "The ruins of the red shōgun"
-----------------------------------------------
Oriana POV
We walked slowly through the landscape and moved further east where we suspected the ruins of the old city that the old woman had spoken of. Speaking of the old woman, Mariana dragged the screaming goat behind her and hit her occasionally when it got too loud. I continued to move forward, the fairy tale of the protector god had caught my attention.
Zelon, on the other hand, was no longer with us. Before we set off, I took him aside in the village and instructed him to carry out his mission without us. After all, it wasn't without reason that I took him with me, but the situation had turned out to be far more interesting than what I had actually planned, so I had to send him off alone. Fortunately, he was enough for the task. After all, he was officially a member of the organization and as a doppelgänger it was easy for him to hide in the crowd.
Just the right person you would send to infiltrate a city.
I smiled as I thought about our upcoming moves. Re-Estize was weakened after our demon invasion, the kingdom of the elves would soon have a new leader, the Theocracy had already been infiltrated on my orders, Demiurge already had something for the holy land planned and the empire...? Now I didn't have anything planned for the Empire yet, but maybe I could arrange something once I was done with the Dragon Kingdom.
"My lady, look here" Mariana interrupted my thoughts and pointed to some ruins that loomed between the mountains in front of us.
The ruins we found looked like the remains of a wall that seemed to stretch over the mountains. We flew over the wall and landed on one of the watchtowers to get a view of our surroundings. This area had previously been farmland because we only saw a few houses between the gigantic tracts of land. But what was even more interesting was that the houses were built in the old Japanese style. A type of construction that I had only seen in a picture from my old world.
I looked further towards the horizon and could see the remains of a second, larger wall in the distance. That was probably the real town where people lived because there too I could see these wooden houses with the sliding paper doors and the squiggly roofs. Who taught them to build these houses? Was it a player from YGGDRASIL? Or was this a culture straight from this world?
Since we didn't want to walk the rest of the way, we just flew towards the city. The old woman we were dragging with us had now become completely quiet and was just babbling something that sounded like heresy. I didn't let that deter me and headed far towards the wall in front of us. The city looked really gigantic from the air. From the way the remains looked, it must have once looked very large and majestic, now it was still large, but it had definitely lost its shine. Just like the wall, which still looked impressive but seemed to be only a shadow of what it was once was.
We reached the wall and jumped into what was left of the city. Now that we were on the ground the houses looked far more impressive. Sure they were abandoned and damaged but still beautiful. I walked forward through an aisle of what must have once been the main street when I was interrupted by a quiet growl. I looked around and spotted a figure in red samurai-like armor carrying a rusty sword. The helmet didn't cover the face, and so I could clearly see the creature's rotten face.
A zombie.
However, the zombie didn't seem to be interested in me because he turned towards Mariana and the old woman and stumbled towards them. That was predictable, after all, Mariana and I were undead and the only living creature for several kilometers around was the old woman.
"Mariana! Protect that old hag, I don't want her to die yet" I ordered which received a nod from her.
She let go of the old woman and hit the undead in the head with a blow filled with just her brute strength, causing him to stagger and fall over.
I heard another rumble and looked around. A new zombie shuffled towards us. Instead of leaving him to Mariana, I gave him a punch that sent his head flying and caused him to fall to the ground. I was about to turn away when I heard numerous growls, the sound seemed to come from between the houses and as I suspected, countless zombies in red armor were staggering towards us.
"Mariana? Care to clean up a little" I asked and gestured to the small army of mindless undead that was starting to
surround us
"For you? Every time my Lady" she answered playfully.
I smiled and walked up to the village leader who was crouching on the ground holding her head.
"Do you see that you old goat? Is that the guardian God you were talking about? It seems to me that these are just regular zombies." I taunted her
"You know nothing you unholy creature. We are all going to die, and it is your fault, for entering the lair of a god." the old woman shouted
"The lair of a god?" I taunted her again "It looks more like an abandoned city to me"
"You know nothing, our god does live here, and he is already angry we should leave right now..." insisted the old woman
"Ha, stop it, I am getting scared" I answered with thick sarcasm in my voice and turned away
"Mariana, how is it going?" I asked.
"I am almost done my Lady" Mariana said
As she had said the small army of undead had been reduced to just a few. Only a few zombies stumbled across the battlefield towards us.
What a shame I thought
I was looking forward to meeting this "Guardian God", but he seemed to be just a fairy tale
One of the zombies in red armor stumbled towards me and I glanced behind me at the old woman still crouching on the ground.
Well it seems like we don't need her anymore
I stepped to the side to clear the zombie's way to the old woman and started to walk past him.
I felt movement behind me and my instincts screamed at me to get out of the way. My instincts had never deceived me since I came to the new world, I noticed this especially in the fight against Shalltear, so I didn't hesitate for even a second and tried to dodge. 'Trying' That was the key word. Even though I had avoided the greatest damage, I still felt a blade cutting into my back. Mariana screamed and I spun around. My scythe was already in my hand while a blood Speer formed itself in my other hand out of small bite wound, ready to pierce my opponent
My mind was going wild and thinking of all sorts of things, but the most common one was probably...
How did he injure me?
