Chapter 1 - Crack in Peace (1)
Seven years have passed since I was possessed into this depressing noir world.
I was 10 years old when I was first possessed and saw my parents’ corpses, and now I’m 17, so it’s been 7 years if we’re counting.
Still, don’t they say that even a dog at a village school can recite poetry after three years?
Seven years ago, I thought I was screwed because it was a depressing noir, but now I’ve adapted fairly well and I’m living a normal life as a part-timer at a PC bang.
I don’t have any memories of my mom and dad who passed away right at the start, so I’m not particularly sad, and my new mother who adopted me is a good person, so it was natural, if anything.
I even think this life might be better than before the possession. Before the possession, I was an orphan without parents and I didn’t study much, so in vulgar terms, I was a loser.
Moreover, recently, it’s been quite fun thanks to a peculiar girl… no, a noona who’s become a regular customer.
“This is boring… I want to play LeOri…”
The regular customer noona mumbled that she wanted to play LeOri while playing Lineage. LeOri is Legend of League.
Lineage, Legend of League.
Doesn’t it seem like this world was created by a Korean? These are words that I feel secretly relieved to be familiar with.
“I want to play LeOri…”
But why does this noona keep talking about LeOri while playing Lineage?
There’s a bit of a funny story behind this.
First of all, this noona looks funny from the start. To be honest, she looks much younger than me.
Is she even 140cm tall? She might be even shorter.
Her body is so skinny that it looks like she should be in a hospital bed, and with her white hair and red eyes, her fragile image is further enhanced.
Despite this, whether it’s showing off or what, she’s using hair wax to expose her forehead.
She’s got long hair beautifully permed with waves, so why did she deliberately expose her forehead with wax?
Moreover, she’s even wearing a pure white shirt and pitch-black slacks, so what kind of show-off is this, it’s not like she’s a Monami ballpen.
“Wow! The enhancement succeeded! This should cover this week’s operating costs!”
Of course, she has a reason to show off.
When you hear the word “operating costs” and consider that this world is a depressing “noir”, you can probably guess.
“Boss of Fantasia (Ruined)”
The title shining above noona’s head.
This world uniquely has something called titles.
Not everyone can obtain them, but those with special qualifications can obtain titles and display them above their heads.
Normally, you can’t see titles that aren’t revealed, but I can see them because I’m a title collector.
It’s an advantage that I can even see the detailed description of that title.
–
Title: Boss of Fantasia (Ruined)
Rarity: EX
Description: The boss of a ruined organization called Fantasia.
–
Yes, she’s called a boss even though it’s a ruined organization. She’s a boss, so she’s using hair wax and matching the Monami fashion to show off.
It’s almost pitiful that she lacks dignity because of her appearance.
Anyway, maybe because it’s a ruined organization, unlike famous organizations, it seems to have no money and no reputation. When I searched for Fantasia on the internet, it said that its downfall began 7 years ago.
“Great! Today I’ll splurge a bit.”
So she doesn’t look like an organization’s boss at all, and it’s almost pitiful to see her excitedly ordering ramen just because she succeeded in enhancing a weapon once.
For now, I don’t want to get deeply involved since it was a gangster who killed my parents.
“Here’s your cheese bokki order.”
“Wow! Cheese bokki! Hyeonwoo’s cheese bokki is the best!”
Somehow, we’ve ended up on a first-name basis.
Noona’s name is Eris. Her full name is Eris Selenoor.
It seems like a baseless name, but in a weird world where my name is ‘Woo Hyeon-woo’ and my new mother’s name is ‘Sato Fuyuka’, I’m too tired to nitpick.
“Noona, it seems like you’re doing well with Lineage these days?”
“Ahem! Of course. I’m earning 300,000 won a week, you know?”
Eris slurped her cheese bokki excitedly.
300,000 won a week, that’s only 1.2 million won a month. Even though it’s ruined, it’s pitiful for an organization’s boss to live on 1.2 million won a month earned from Lineage.
“Wow, that’s really impressive. When you first started playing LeOri saying you’d make rice money, I wondered what kind of person you were.”
Still, she’s made some progress. Eris’s funny story is about her rice-eating LeOri.
Legend of League.
Even people who haven’t played LeOri know this. Unless you become a pro gamer and win the league, it’s nonsense to say you’ll make money from the game.
But Eris, whether she didn’t know much about games or what, was excited about trying to earn living expenses through Legend of League.
Then, when she couldn’t find a way to make money no matter how much she played Legend of League, she came to me, the part-timer, with a question, which was our first conversation.
“Part-timer, I have a question, can I ask?”
“Go ahead.”
“How do I make money with Legend of League?”
“You become a pro gamer and win the league, right?”
“Pro gay? How do I become a pro gay when I’m in a woman’s body?”
“Not pro gay, pro gamer…”
I had to explain to Eris, who didn’t know what a pro gamer was, this common knowledge that most people know.
Why doesn’t she know something so obvious?
Because of that feeling, I even had some rude thoughts. Seeing her white hair, I wondered if she might actually be an old grandmother who just looks young.
Since this isn’t a normal world, it wouldn’t be strange if such a person appeared.
“So you’re saying I need to play this game called Lineage to make money? It’s so boring though…”
In the end, Eris learned that she couldn’t make money with LeOri and had to play Lineage to make money.
Maybe Lineage wasn’t to her taste, she keeps saying it’s boring and singing about wanting to play LeOri. Mr. Lin from somewhere might be quite offended if he heard this, but who cares.
I’m not Mr. Lin anyway.
“But noona, are you really 20 years old?”
“Mhm, that’s wight?”
Eris answered with cheese bokki in her mouth.
No matter how I look at her, she doesn’t seem 20 years old. When I first told her about Lineage, I said she needed to be an adult to make money with Lineage, so she showed me her ID.
That ID said that a woman named Eris Selenoor was 20 years old, and even the ID photo matched her face exactly, so I had no choice but to believe it, but…
It still seems strange that this appearance is 20 years old.
“Every time I see you, you don’t look 20. You look like you should be in kindergarten.”
“Well, you… munch munch… gulp! You don’t look 17 at all either, you know?”
It’s funny to see her talking while eating cheese bokki, but it’s not exactly wrong.
I was possessed into a depressing noir and I’ve never been good with studying, so I don’t go to school, and I’ve been working out like crazy because you never know when a crisis might occur, so I’ve become quite bulky.
I’m 186cm tall and can lift 500 in the three main lifts.
Additionally, although it’s considered useless in this world where superpowers exist, I’ve also learned kickboxing, so I’m confident I can fight well against ordinary people.
What about my hairstyle? It’s my new mother’s taste, but my hairstyle is also made using wax, which makes me look even more mature.
From Eris’s perspective, I probably don’t look 17 at all.
“Are you making fun of me for looking old?”
“Ah, no! That’s not what I meant. You look really cool! I often think I want to be like you. You’re amazing.”
“Well, you’d have to change your gender first.”
“Gender? Ah… right, I’m a woman.”
Eris scratched her cheek with an awkward smile. Sometimes she seems to forget that she’s a woman, but I don’t know why she does that.
Even if I’m curious, I don’t ask. I don’t intend to have a deep relationship with gangsters.
“Well, I’ll be going now. Enjoy your game.”
“It’s not fun though… slurp.”
This is as far as our relationship goes.
A relationship at the level of part-timer and regular customer is enough. If she wasn’t a gangster, it might be different, but since she is, I have no intention of developing a deeper relationship.
“Today, the Esper Hunter has once again protected the city by defeating monsters. We’ve invited the boss of Esper Hunter, Han Sehee.”
Gangster, organized crime.
It’s a term that exists here too, but it’s not used much. The term ‘ability user organization’ is used much more often.
“Hello, I’m Han Sehee. To be honest, there wasn’t much to boast about today. It was just a group of goblins that appeared.”
A woman with strangely sky-blue hair and even sky-blue eyes appeared on the TV screen. Her neatly cut bob and cold eyes give off an intelligent vibe.
This woman is the boss of an organization called Esper Hunter – Han Sehee.
The title floating above her head, ‘Boss of Esper Hunter (Top 3 Organization)’ is visible even to those who aren’t title collectors like me because it’s publicly displayed.
Esper Hunter is one of the top 3 ability user organizations.
A city surrounded by huge walls and different races trying to invade that city.
Those who kill these different races and protect the city are clearly evil and must be committing all sorts of crimes, but…
People don’t try to dig into it because they’re safe from the different races thanks to these people. Moreover, somehow all the bosses of the organizations are beautiful girls, so they’re even popular.
It’s just that those who have actually been harmed by gangsters dislike them but can’t express their opinions.
I just want to live a normal life in this depressing noir world, so I don’t want to get involved with gangsters.
Am I going to attack gangsters to avenge my mom and dad who I don’t even remember living with? I’m saying I absolutely won’t do such a thing.
But when you try to live a normal life, due to the nature of possession stories, something always happens to interfere with that.
“Who is it! Who killed my Chunsik!”
Out of nowhere, a man barged into the peaceful PC bang, shouting.
The moment I saw the man’s chest, I involuntarily held my breath.
A badge with a picture of a snake sticking out its tongue was pinned to the man’s chest.
It was a badge symbolizing a member of Carpe Diem, one of the top 3 organizations.
“Come out quickly, the one who killed Chunsik! Before I smash all the computers of you Lineage players!”
It seemed like someone had killed this gangster’s Lineage character in PVP.
This had never happened in the PC bang for 7 years, why now?
Tension runs down my spine. Especially because of the title of this guy who calls himself Chunsik, it’s even more suffocating.
“Madman of Drug”
–
Title: Madman of Drug
Rarity: EX
Description: In Carpe Diem (Top 3 Organization), there’s a Drug Family among the Psychorman (direct line). He’s called the Madman of Drug because he’s crazy enough to be acknowledged by Drug, the mother of the family.
–
Hair dyed yellow, slicked back, piercings next to his eyes, piercings on his tongue.
Even without seeing his title as a title collector, he’s clearly a proper madman that I don’t want to get involved with.
“Is the bastard using the Lineage nickname EriSeleno not coming out?”
But what if the person this madman is looking for is our PC bang’s regular customer?
What if this crazy bastard is rampaging with a gun?
What if it leads to a murder in our PC bang?
It’s chilling. The moment this becomes a PC bang that gangsters frequently visit, regular customers will stop coming, and we might end up paying protection money to Carpe Diem.
Not only losing regular customers but also having to pay protection money.
I let my guard down thinking that even a dog at a village school can recite poetry after three years, but I shouldn’t have.
It seemed like the noir was just about to begin.
