Chapter 21: Chapter 21 The Wife in Humble Circumstances (21)
The Su Family's parents were completely stunned by Su Li's confrontation; they had never thought about nor considered the questions she posed.
They only looked at things from their own perspective, naively thinking that this was best for their daughter, for themselves, for their family...
After calming her emotions, Su Li returned to her indifferent state, "For the time being, let Doudou stay with me...."
"Mom and Dad, I really feel like I used to be a puppet you manipulated..."
"I sometimes wonder, why are you different from other parents... I've resented, hated, felt powerless, but now I've also come to understand."
"Not every set of parents can do a good job at parenting."
Su Li's final words were thought-provoking, and Mr. and Mrs. Su couldn't help but reflect that maybe they had pushed their child too hard.
Did Su Li's parents love her?
Certainly.
They had not spared any effort in raising their own daughter.
But perhaps there were things even more critical than love in their hearts.
The Su Family's parents sat despondently in the living room for a long time, exchanging no words, and without any goodbye, they quietly left.
A note was left on the table.
It was written by Mr. Su: You're grown up now, your wings are strong, and as parents, we can't control you anymore. We just hope that you won't regret the path you've chosen for yourself.
The words still revealed the old man's stubborn defiance; perhaps he had realized something, but he definitely didn't want to admit that what he had always insisted on might be wrong.
Meanwhile, Chen Jin had waited all morning before he couldn't wait any longer to call Mr. Su, eager to know if Su Li had capitulated....
"Stop calling me in the future, I thought you were a decent guy, but after my daughter bore you two kids, you dared to cheat on her... Sorry, but I can't bear to hear you call me 'father-in-law' now that you're divorced."
Mr. Su fired off his words and then, with a click full of anger, hung up the phone without giving his former son-in-law a second to speak.
Chen Jin had never expected such an outcome; he had always managed Su Li's parents' sentiments very well.
What didn't disappoint him was that Su Li's parents had always treated him even better than their own son, but this time, things had gone out of control....
Su Li was very angry about Chen Jin's latest meddling; he still had too much idle time, which he used to keep an eye on her.
"Mr. X, same price as before, don't let them have any free time...."
--------------------------
When Doudou woke up, he rubbed his eyes and first saw his mother, thinking it had all been a dream.
"Mommy's darling, are you awake...."
Doudou suddenly dove into Su Li's arms, "Mommy, can I always stay with you?"
"Grandma is bad... she always scolds Mommy, and she scolds my sister, scolds Doudou...."
Upon hearing this, Su Li was unexpectedly furious; she hadn't anticipated such a development.
She had only confidently allowed Chen Jin to take away Doudou because she knew that the Chen Family loved little children. Little did she imagine they would take out their dissatisfaction with her on the child.
In fact, Su Li was slightly mistaken – the Chen couple truly loved their grandson, but the key was that they didn't want to put in too much effort.
Mrs. Chen, taking care of Little Doudou, began to feel increasingly resentful as time passed.
They couldn't stand being tired, couldn't endure hardship, and as time went on, Doudou became more and more irritating to their eyes, and the gentle, caring whispers from before were nowhere to be heard.
When Mrs. Chen received a call from her son this time, she couldn't wait to send Doudou to the neighboring Su Family, then immediately signed up for a senior citizen's trip abroad, clearly afraid that Doudou might be sent back in a few days.
The previously adored little grandson had become a burden she was eager to get rid of.
When Xi Muqian brought the contract over, Little Doudou was enjoying a super lavish meal prepared by Su Li.
"Uncle Xi..."
"Little Treasure Doudou has come."
Xi Muqian gave the child a surprised look, somewhat puzzled.
Although Doudou had shown no hostility to him in the past, there was also little affection, but this time he greeted him proactively, with a big smile no less, making him feel unexpectedly honored.
"Hey, what brings you here?"
"Here, for you..."
Su Li took the thin stack of papers from Xi Muqian's hands, a contract from a publishing house.
"Your 'Mystery of the Wealthy Family' has really pleased them... they went straight to the top contract they offer for you."
Su Li skimmed through it quickly, well aware of the great role Xi Muqian had played in it.
For her, an unknown newcomer, even if her work was good, it wouldn't warrant such a generous offer. Moreover, all the clauses in the contract were clear cut, without a single trap. Evidently, it had been reviewed by professionals before it came to her, and every term was in her favor.
Su Li's expression paused for a moment, and all she could muster was a meager "Thank you."
Chen Jin had thought about looking for Su Li, but now he was tied up with so many issues that he couldn't get away.
When someone is out of luck, they can choke even on cold water.
One unfortunate event after another left Chen Jin spread too thin. In just a few short days, he seemed to have aged several years.
Prior cooperative projects had been put on hold, and the office tussle with the deputy general manager had escalated into open conflict. With one misstep, the head office's staff grew dissatisfied with him, even questioning his work capacity. To make matters worse, Liu Yin, as if transformed into someone else, clung to him like a dark specter.
Even more troubling was that Liu Yin brought the drama to the company, which was a major reason for the change in attitude from the higher-ups.
Chen Jin was now practically seething with hatred for Liu Yin.
There she was, after work, popping up from some corner to block his car.
She stood with arms crossed, eyebrows raised, looking like someone not to be messed with. From head to toe, she bore no resemblance to the gentle, fragile creature she had been earlier.
Or perhaps, this was her true self?
"Chen Jin, are you even a man, treating me this way..."
"Not even a tiger would harm its cubs, how could you so heartlessly tell me to abort the child?"
"Anyway, I don't care anymore. I too have a child now, and you're single again. You have two choices, either give me a lot of money and I'll take the child and leave, never to appear before you again, or marry me and give the baby a home..."
"Choose for yourself."
Chen Jin's gaze was cold and merciless as he glanced at Liu Yin's slightly bulging belly, "I won't choose either..."
Liu Yin had actually been hoping Chen Jin would choose the second option, since she still had feelings for him.
But Chen Jin's attitude was so disappointing that, recalling the advice of a few acquaintances she'd met recently, she hardened her heart and shouted angrily, "Fine, you can choose neither, then I will continue to make a scene in the company. After all, I have nothing left to lose now."
