Chapter 5: Gambit 1
For weeks, Governor Elias Morrow had fought tooth and nail to dismantle Silas Kane's empire. The police had seized warehouses, gold reserves and offshore accounts.
Morrow's special forces had stormed Kane's Dominion, shutting down his illegal operations. The press declared his downfall imminent. The government called it a victory against corruption.
But Morrow knew one thing was missing and that's Silas Kane himself. The king was still out there. And until Kane was in chains, the war wasn't over.
7 AM at the governor's residence, a convoy of unmarked black SUVs rolled up to Governor Morrow's estate just after sunrise. Morrow's security team was already on edge. Officers rushed to the gates, weapons drawn and demanding identification.
But the vehicles simply stopped. And then, to everyone's shock, the back doors of the lead SUV swung open. Two figures stepped out. Caroline and Lena Morrow. Unharmed. Unshaken. Simply… returned. Gasps rippled through the security team. Morrow, still in his dressed shirt from a long sleepless night, rushed down the steps as fast as his legs would carry him.
Caroline grabbed Lena's hand and ran to him. The moment Morrow's arms wrapped around them, he felt a wave of relief so intense it nearly broke him. Lena clung to his neck, her voice trembling. "Daddy…?" I'm here, sweetheart," he whispered. "I've got you." Caroline pulled back slightly, searching his face. Her eyes were wide with confusion.
"He let us go, Elias." Her voice shook. "Silas Kane let us go." Morrow's breath hitched. His grip on them tightened. Why? Why would Kane willingly return them? And then as if to answer the question himself…The SUV's driver-side window rolled down.
Inside, calm as ever, smirking as if this was all some elaborate joke was Silas Kane. Morrow's stomach twisted. He took a slow, calculated step forward, fists clenching. Silas tilted his head slightly, as if amused. "Morning, Governor."
And before Morrow could say a word, the SUV pulled away, the convoy vanishing down the street like ghosts. Silas Kane had just walked away. And somehow, Morrow knew this wasn't the end.
Because 8 AM at the governor's office, Elias Morrow sat in his office with his thoughts storming like a hurricane. His family was safe. His greatest enemy had willingly handed them over. It didn't make sense. Then, his office doors swung open. Morrow's security team reached for their weapons.
But they froze. Because standing in the doorway, unarmed, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit with a gold ring gleaming…Was Silas Kane himself. Calm. Smiling. Like he had just walked in for a friendly chat. "You got your family back, Governor."
Morrow's entire body went rigid. "You son of a…." Silas held up a hand. "Before you say something dramatic, let me help you out." He leaned forward. "You want to arrest me, right?" Morrow's jaw tightened.
"Well," Kane spread his arms, voice dripping with amusement. "Here I am." Morrow's breath caught. Was this a trick? "You're saying you'll turn yourself in?" Silas nodded, his smirk deepening. "No fights, no lawyers, no tricks. Take me in." Silence crashed through the room.
Morrow stared, his mind racing. This was too easy. This wasn't how Silas Kane operated. Something was wrong. But he didn't hesitate. "Take him. Now." His security team moved in, slamming cuffs onto Kane's wrists.
And for the first time in history…Silas Kane was under arrest.
The news spread like wildfire. Cameras flashed as officers escorted Silas Kane into the police headquarters. The streets were flooded with reporters, all shouting over each other:
"Silas Kane, do you regret your crimes?"
"Did Governor Morrow break you?"
"Is this the end of the gold empire?" Through it all, Kane never stopped smiling. Because he knew something they didn't.
9 AM at the interrogation room, inside a cold and dimly lit room, Kane sat at a steel table with wrists cuffed in front of him. Across from him, Elias Morrow leaned forward, eyes burning. "You think this is a game, Kane?" Silas smirked. "Oh, Elias. It's always a game."
Morrow's hands slammed against the table. "You lost! I won! Your empire is finished!" Kane chuckled, shaking his head. "My empire? Oh, Governor." He leaned forward, voice dropping to a whisper. "You don't understand, do you?" Morrow's jaw tightened. Then, the door opened.
A high-ranking police officer stepped inside. "Governor, we have a problem." Morrow turned, frustrated. "What?" The officer hesitated. "We… we can't hold Kane." Morrow froze. His mind raced. "What do you mean?"
The officer swallowed hard. "Sir… most of the state prosecutors, judges, and senior investigators owe Kane favors. His people are everywhere." Morrow's stomach twisted. He turned back to Silas Kane, who sat there, completely relaxed. Kane raised an eyebrow, amused. "Oops."The law can't hold a King"
Morrow's pulse thundered in his ears. His entire plan was collapsing in real time. "You son of a…" Kane laughed. "You thought you could bring me down by following the rules?" Morrow clenched his fists. "You're a criminal, Kane." Kane's smirk didn't fade. "Then break the rules." Morrow stared, confused. Kane leaned in.
"That's what it takes, Elias. You want to catch me? You want to win? Then stop pretending this system was ever built for men like me." Silence. Then, Kane stood. The police officer swallowed hard. "Governor, we… we have no legal grounds to detain him."
Morrow's fists trembled with rage. But he knew. He had lost. Kane adjusted his cuffs, smiling. "This was fun. Let's do it again sometime." Then he walked out. Free. Untouched. Laughing.
That night, Silas Kane stood on the balcony of his penthouse, looking over the city he still owned. Jonas Wren poured two drinks, smirking. "That was risky, boss. Turning yourself in? Ballsy move." Silas chuckled. "Please. I never lose."
Jonas shook his head, grinning. "What's next?" Silas took his drink, swirling the gold liquid. "Now?" His smirk widened. "Now, we rebuild." Because kings never truly fall. They rise again. And this time, no one would stop him.
