Chapter 3 Part 2 - The Fragile Extra in the Book (3)
“What was the next most important thing, the circle of magic of Aquila, the lover of the Ancestral Founder who died at the hands of the Ancestral Founder?”
The great witch Aquila was the woman most responsible for the founding of this nation, but she met a miserable end due to the betrayal of her beloved.
Aquila’s magic circuit is in the royal library because it was she who created the Tome of Magic so that her legacy could live on.
While creating her legacy, Aquila decided to secretly leave a portion of her life-like magic circuit for herself and her child.
However, she was betrayed before she could give birth to a child, and her legacy is an unfortunate one, buried in darkness.
Her magic circuit was so powerful that if a talented mage could obtain it, he could become the greatest archmage of all time.
The only problem was that the person who got it was one of Precia’s enemies who had helped kill Prince Yuan.
“That’s why it’s so important.”
Killing Prince Yuan would mean killing me.
I scrolled down, remembering what the novel said.
It was too sketchy a description, as it wasn’t found by the main character, but I could find Aquila’s book on the third floor bookshelf.
I quickly scanned the shelves, looking for a book with Aquila’s name in the author’s column.
“Found it.”
Whether it was because the Ancestor had erased most of Aquila’s records to cover up his betrayal, or because no one knew of her existence anymore, the book was gathering dust as if it had never been pulled out.
Judging by its condition, it seems that the snake hadn’t found ‘Arcana, 01’ yet.
There was no mention of when it was acquired, which was a relief.
Without hesitation, I took the book and opened it.
“Let’s see,” I said, “if I scrape the ancient word ‘quay’ out of the letters of the last paragraph on the last page, ….”
I scratched out the ancient word ‘quay’ from the last paragraph and replaced it with a character that meant ‘legacy’.
The words in the book leapt to life, creating a magic circle in the air, and a small crystal fell from the circle.
Hundreds of years later, the crystal still sparkled without a scratch.
The original discoverer of the book also acquired it, and it was not until many years later that he discovered its secret.
If you hold this crystal against your chest, the magic circuitry within will be engraved into your body.
“Huh~!”
I took a deep breath before touching the crystal.
Apparently, the implantation process burns your entire body.
Even if I got it right away, it wouldn’t be much use since I don’t know any magic.
But it was better to have it done in advance, in case it was stolen.
In the novel, it was described as being so hot that it was like being in a hot bath after being in a cold one, so it should be fine.
“Ouch!”
I pressed the crystal against my chest and felt the pain start in my heart, move to my throat, and then spread throughout my body.
Off!”
I rolled on the floor, writhing in unbearable pain.
I tried to pull the crystal off, desperate to live, but it wouldn’t come off my chest.
I regretted not giving it to someone else if I knew it would be this painful.
I rolled around for a while before the pain stopped and I could breathe properly.
“Huh! Huh! Ah, the spa! Ouch, I thought I was going to die.”
I didn’t have a mirror so I couldn’t see how I looked now, but I didn’t think that I looked normal .
There was blood everywhere from the scratches I’d made on my chest trying to force the crystal off, and my nose was bleeding from where I’d bumped it while rolling on the floor.
I plugged my nose roughly with a handkerchief and smoothed out my clothes with clammy hands.
There was still a lingering pain, but it felt like nothing after the shock of what had just happened.
“Huh? What is this?”
The crystal was gone from my chest, and a small silver ring was attached to it.
Wasn’t something like this described?
The ring said something in ancient language.
(TN: Nipple ring? >_<)
The ring said something in ancient language.
My immediate interpretation was “And,” “child,” and “Aquila.
“For her and the child, Aquila?”
If I recall correctly, the ring was originally Aquila’s magic book, held by the guy who got the magic circuit.
It later ends up in Jade’s hands, but that’s near the end of the novel.
It was a spellbook designed to help an unborn child learn magic, but of course it was written in ancient language and required interpretation.
“I can’t use it right now, but I’ve got it.”
Aquila’s grimoire was priceless, a treasure that doubled as a magic staff that even dragons coveted.
Was this what was in the crystal?
But it was too painful to rejoice.
To me now, Aquila was not an unfortunate woman, but a rare bastard.
Could it be that this cursed body of hers was the reason she was so different from her description in the novel?
I sighed, realizing that my prediction was correct, and looked again at the crest on my right arm, but the letters had changed.
“0.0407 percent.
“Haha, ahahaha! This XXX! XXX like XX! After all that pain, it only went up by 0.0007%?! Even cheap sweets would add more than this!”
I barely pulled myself up and checked the time.
Time permitting, anything hidden anywhere other than the royal study would have to wait for another day.
I grabbed a book tucked away nearby, presumably readable only by the Sages of the Winterwood, and set out to find the last of the secrets I could find here.
It was no exaggeration to say that my life might depend on it, given the failure of my primary goal, the Ancestral Legacy.
**
A couple of notes.
1. I’m not sure if the ring is an actual ring or a tattoo
2. Unsure about the 3 words. For sure, 2 of them are Aquila and Child, but the third was…uncertain, so I asked Google Noona.
3. Poor baby Yuan is really going through it. I see why he drinks.
