Chapter 29 - When a Rumor Becomes a Dagger (4)
Looking at Gilbert pledging his loyalty, I took out a luxurious long box and a red sash from the ingredient warehouse.
“Normally, we would have to follow proper formalities, but my situation isn’t that good, so let’s keep the appointment ceremony simple.”
Honestly speaking, it would have been fine not to do it at all, but since it was the moment Gilbert’s dream was coming true, I thought it would be good to commemorate it to some extent.
It wasn’t because I felt sorry for gulping down the legacy of the founder that Gilbert should have had.
Yes, yes, it was purely for Gilbert’s sake. I just gave it to Abasael without anything like this, but so what?
Precia received the sash from me, draped it over Gilbert’s shoulder, and fixed it with a brooch engraved with the royal family’s emblem.
“Gilbert Asan, kneel and receive the royal command.”
At my words, Gilbert knelt before me.
Since royal knights are always appointed by royal command, it wasn’t really treason for me to mention the royal command.
Of course, even if it was treason, there was no one here to report it anyway.
I took out a sword made by dwarves from the box and asked:
“Will you serve the royal family and the kingdom with loyalty and faith?”
“Yes! I will serve!”
Then, while drawing the sword from its scabbard, I asked:
“Will you know honor and stand against injustice?”
“I will stand against it!”
Placing the drawn sword on Gilbert’s shoulder, I asked:
“Do you swear before the great sun and the cruel moon to devote your entire being to your lord?”
“I swear.”
At his oath, I declared:
“I, the eldest son of Duplion. Yuan del Azdemian Duplion declares before the sun, the father of all life, and the moon, the mother of all rest, that I will repay your loyal heart with sincerity and integrity.”
Hearing my full name, Gilbert looked at me with surprised rabbit eyes.
I sheathed the sword back into its scabbard and handed it to Gilbert.
“I, the eldest son of Duplion. Yuan del Azdemian Duplion, on behalf of Duplion’s great ruler Casimel del Judmerian Duplion, appoint Gilbert Asan as a knight. Take this sword and uphold the justice of the world.”
Gilbert received the sword with trembling hands, perhaps due to nervousness.
“Let’s do well from now on. Sir Knight.”
When I spoke playfully, he jumped up and saluted.
“Yes! I will serve with utmost loyalty!”
So stiff. As I hit his back while laughing, telling him to relax, Divet, who was watching, still looked at me with eyes full of disbelief.
“Are you really a prince?”
“But yes.”
“The identification badge is real, the emblem on that brooch is also real, and the sword doesn’t seem like an ordinary sword… Are you also a real prince?”
That sword was originally intended to be given by the Queen to the Prince as a birthday gift, so it wasn’t an ordinary sword.
Of course, I sneakily took it in the middle, though.
“That sword has subspace storage magic, so it’s a set with this bracelet.”
I took out a crude bracelet that was hidden under the box and handed it to Gilbert.
The subspace was small enough to be full with just one sword, but the merit was great in that there was no need to carry around an expensive-looking sword for anyone to see.
As Gilbert put the sword into the subspace and marveled at it, I took out a sword from the forgotten military supplies in the storage and handed it to him.
“It hasn’t been maintained for a long time since it wasn’t used, but the storage environment was good, so if you wipe off the oil and sharpen the blade, it should be usable. Use this one on a daily basis.”
The secret space where the military supplies were stored had magic formations installed for humidity control and ventilation to make it suitable for storage.
It was probably for long-term storage of promissory notes.
In fact, even after 120 years, the promissory notes were intact, only slightly yellowed by time on the surface.
“Thank you. Prince!”
He seemed to be in a good mood now that he had two new swords.
“Well then, this is my first command.”
“Please give your orders!”
“From now on, you will address me as ‘young master’.”
“Ah…!”
Gilbert seemed to understand why I gave such an order, even though he was disappointed.
“And the second command is to spend time with your sister, taking care of her without going to work until I come back in a few days. Since you’ll have a hard time seeing your sister’s face for a while if you move with me from now on. Think of this as your last vacation.”
“Yes!”
Gilbert answered energetically.
Seeing Gilbert’s naive face made me feel like an evil business owner exploiting an innocent child.
But it’s true that he won’t be able to see his sister’s face for a while, so what can I do?
Who threatened me with a knife to take their body as collateral?
Ah, did I tempt him with his sister’s cure?
Well, whatever. Good is good.
The next schedule was to take Divet, who wanted to grab my collar and demand his granddaughter’s location right away, to meet his granddaughter.
“I’ll say it again, old man. Don’t even open your mouth. If you get excited and rush in hastily, and she runs away without looking back as taught by the Cure Master, even I won’t be able to find her. No, I won’t find her for you.”
“Ahem…!”
At my warning, Divet made a coughing sound as if dissatisfied.
However, the Cure Master was also ranked high on the Poison Institute’s assassination list, so even he knew well enough to be careful.
I crossed the market street, recalling the descriptions in the novel.
According to the descriptions, from a location where a large bridge crossing the river could be seen in the distance, entering about 10 meters next to a clock shop, there would be a tobacco shop in the alley, which was the place operated by the Cured Master.
There were a total of five bridges crossing the river that ran through the capital, but there was only one bridge visible from the market street on the east side.
Seeing the bridge, I looked around to find the clock shop.
I easily found the clock shop with dozens of clocks on display and entered the alley next to it.
“This is the place.”
When I pointed to a small store with ‘Tobacco’ written on a rusty iron plate, Divet frowned.
“This is a regular store for the guys from the labor agency who give work to Gil.”
“Oh? You know?”
“Those damn labor agency bastards said the girl at this tobacco shop is a prude… I’m going to kill those jerks!”
As Divet suddenly got excited and tried to run towards the riverside, Precia and I grabbed him.
“Calm down! Old man!”
What kind of drug addict geezer is this strong!
“Do I look calm right now?!”
“Those people didn’t know you were family when they made that joke!”
I could guess why he was getting angry, as the jokes coming out of the mouths of rough-working men would be obvious.
“Does that make it okay if they didn’t know?!”
“It’s not okay, but! Then you should have gotten angry then, why are you making a fuss now?!”
“Ah! I don’t know!”
“This won’t do! Precia! Knock this old man out!”
“Yes! Young master!”
Precia choked Divet and instantly knocked him unconscious.
“Phew! This damn old fart, I wonder if he’ll poison those people’s meals later.”
“Would he really do that?”
At Precia’s words, I nodded and carried the unconscious Divet on my back.
“Come to think of it, those people are also regular customers of this old man, so would he really kill them? At most, he’ll probably just mix in some laxatives.”
Divet had been making a living mainly by selling ointments that work well on wounds and cold medicines.
Naturally, the rough-working laborers had to be his main customers.
It was probably thanks to that Divet got to know Gilbert.
By the way, he’s damn heavy since he’s unconscious.
As Precia and I were laughing and chatting, a woman opened the sliding door from inside the tobacco shop and shouted irritably.
“Who’s making a racket in broad daylight!”
As a beautiful woman who looked strong-willed came out with a loud voice, I smiled brightly.
“Ah, sorry. Are you open for business now?”
“Hmm… Are you a customer?”
“Yes.”
“Come in.”
As I changed from a noisy nuisance to a customer, she softened her attitude.
Going inside, I laid Divet on the customer’s chair as if throwing him.
“Oh my, so heavy.”
I wiped my forehead roughly with my sleeve, sweating just from moving him, and looked around the interior.
In the small and cramped tobacco shop, there were various tobacco pipes and different varieties of dried tobacco leaves, as well as cigarettes of different sizes lined up in cigar cases.
It was my first time seeing such a specialized tobacco shop.
“Which tobacco are you looking for? Coroho? Crio-yo? We also have foreign ones. San Andreas and Sumatra tobacco leaves are also popular. For ladies, I recommend cigarettes over pipes. It’s easy to add flavors to cigarettes. Ah, for beginners, a short petit corona would be good.”
Nedrian took out a cigar cutter and a lit candle and spoke.
“Since it’s your first time here, I’ll let you try one for free. Pick one.”
“No, it’s okay.”
I like alcohol, but I don’t like tobacco.
“I came to buy something other than tobacco.”
“Other than tobacco? At a tobacco shop?”
She looked at me as if it was absurd.
“Don’t you also sell medicinal herbs here?”
“Aha, medicinal herbs. Indeed, this place was originally a medicinal herb store. But it didn’t sell well, so I changed it to a tobacco shop. We don’t sell them anymore.”
In the novel, it was described as selling both tobacco and medicinal herbs, so it’s strange.
“You don’t sell them? The owner grandmother here is quite stubborn, so she let you change it?”
When I looked puzzled, Nedrian flinched.
“Huh? You know grandmother?”
“Not very well, just a little.”
At my answer, she scratched her cheek and looked troubled.
“Grandmother will be angry if she finds out, but what can I do? It wasn’t selling to the point of worrying about meals. She’s been away for almost 2 years now, so it should be fine.”
Indeed, Nedrian changed it on her own.
In the novel, the Cure Master tried to change it back to a medicinal herb store when she returned, but the tobacco shop was already thriving, so she couldn’t change it.
I roughly got the picture.
“The owner grandmother is away on a trip?”
“That’s right. I told her there was no need to do that… No, what am I saying? Ahahaha!”
She laughed awkwardly and brushed it off. I see, so the Cure Master is not here now. It was a good call to knock Divet out.
“We do have some old medicinal herbs, and I can sell them cheaply if you want to buy. I learned how to handle medicinal herbs from grandmother, so they’re in good condition.”
I smiled and nodded.
“If Cure Master Aladrine taught you, it should be fine.”
“That’s right, grand…!”
Nedrian looked at me with surprised eyes, then immediately took out a dagger from a drawer and tried to stab my neck.
It was very quick and bold but not skilled enough to penetrate through Precia and harm me.
Precia grabbed Nedrian’s wrist and simultaneously grabbed her hair, slamming her head against the storage drawer that also served as a table.
Bang!
Then she twisted her wrist, snatched the dagger, bent her arm behind her back, and pressed the dagger against her neck to subdue her.
I couldn’t help but admire the events that unfolded in an instant.
“Wow, I’m grateful you saved me, but that must hurt. Take it easy.”
“She tried to harm you, young master. No matter if she’s the old man’s granddaughter, it’s unforgivable.”
After the assassin incident, she seemed to be more on edge about my safety. Is that a good thing for me?
“It’s fine. You’ll protect me anyway. Ah, but don’t release the restraint until the persuasion is over.”
It would be troublesome if she runs away.
“Let’s lock the store door first.”
If a customer comes and sees the current situation, it would look like a robbery.
The moment I turned my body to lock the store door, some grandmother came in.
“Nedrian! While I was away, tobacco, what is this…!”
The grandmother who suddenly entered had a graceful and well-groomed face, like a noblewoman from somewhere.
But did this grandmother just call Nedrian’s name?
“Who are you! Get away from my granddaughter!”
Damn it! We’re doomed! She’s the Cure Master after all!
Before the Cured Master could move, I shouted:
“Don’t move! The moment you move even a fingertip, your granddaughter’s neck will be severed!”
