Chapter 17 - The Foolish Sage and the Wise Fool (1)
Looking at Gilbert wiping his tears, Divet smiled bitterly.
“Your words are smooth, but how are you different from a mercenary?”
As expected of a grumpy old man, his way of speaking was crooked.
“Well, there’s not much difference. Maybe just receiving knighthood?”
In the first place, a knight refers to a commander who leads soldiers or a special unit that gathers only human weapons.
“You can give him knighthood?”
“As you can see, I’m a child from a good family.”
At my answer, Divet looked at me as if it was absurd.
“A scrawny guy like you doesn’t seem like a child from a good family at all.”
“Hey, even if it’s true, what you said is too harsh.”
When I expressed my dissatisfaction, Precia looked at me as if asking for permission to deal with this rude old man right away.
I shook my head slightly, and Precia took her hand off the sword hidden inside her coat as if there was no choice.
“By the way, who did you learn medicine from?”
Unlike when we first met, Divet’s gaze was not hostile.
“I can tell you’re not part of Dokwon. They’re not the kind to give up this precious thing out of goodwill.”
I smiled brightly at his question and said,
“Let’s say it’s self-study. Actually, I don’t know that much either.”
At my answer, Divet snorted as if to say ‘as if’.
“If you don’t want to say it, forget it.”
No, it’s really true, though.
“I’m going to diagnose that kid’s sister again. Are you coming with me?”
At Divet’s question, I looked at Gilbert and Precia once each and answered.
“No, I still have a place to visit. I’ll drop by there later when I have time, not today.”
“Ah, I…!”
When Gilbert tried to follow me, I stopped him and said,
“You take care of your sister. Let’s go, Precia.”
I took Precia and left Divet’s residence, walking down the street and looking up at the sky.
Perhaps because it was midwinter, even though it wasn’t very late, there was a slight reddish tinge.
“It seems like something is bothering you.”
When I looked at Precia with a playful smile, she made a prudish expression.
“I won’t oppose it since it’s your choice, young master, but it’s a bit concerning to have someone unverified by your side.”
“Is it because he seems to have become a knight easily while you became one after enduring difficult training?”
At my half-joking, half-serious point, Precia flinched as if hit where it hurts.
“Ugh…!”
I laughed lightly at Precia’s reaction.
“Compared to you, it may not be as hard training, but he must have made his own efforts too. And easily gaining something can’t be seen as entirely good.”
She seemed to not understand my words and expressed doubt.
“Why is that?”
“An easily gained position is lost just as easily. Even you don’t view him very positively right now, so Gilbert will always have to prove his worth. That’s not an easy thing to do.”
At my answer, Precia nodded.
“So teach him well. He may not have talent, but he seems to have tenacity.”
“Yes! I will do my best to make sure he doesn’t cause any trouble for you, young master!”
Thinking about it, Precia didn’t have teaching talent as much as she was a genius herself.
I pitied Gilbert’s future at the sight of Precia burning with enthusiasm and fighting spirit.
“Ah, but you said there’s a place you need to visit; where is it? The circus troupe where that jester is?”
“We need to go there too. But there’s a place we need to go to before that.”
I took out a mask from the bag Precia was holding and smiled.
Yard Tossel was sitting on a chair, habitually fiddling with cards, and blankly watching his colleagues preparing for the circus performance.
Everyone was moving busily to prepare, but no one said anything about him sitting still alone.
Yard’s colleagues knew well that when he sat on a chair and fiddled with cards, it meant he was pondering something important.
“Deputy chief, you’ve been fiddling with cards for so long; something must be up.”
When a man with a huge build that seemed to be over 2 meters tall sat next to Yard and struck up a conversation, Yard stopped his unconscious action of changing cards.
“Ah… Proxy Chief, you’re here. How was the recruitment in the north? Do you think many will come?”
“Ahaha, there are many upper-class people there, so it doesn’t seem like many will come. I mainly targeted kids for now, but who knows.”
At the Proxy Chief’s joke, Yard smiled brightly.
“With the Proxy Chief’s skills, it should be enough to captivate the children. They say there are no parents who beat their children, so we can expect a good turnout.”
“It’s a big deal if you expect too much. So what happened? According to Lupus, you got rejected after hitting on a taken woman.”
At the light joke, Yard nodded with a chuckle.
“As expected of Lupus. His discerning eyes are scary.”
“Ahahaha! Lupus does have good discerning eyes.”
The Proxy Chief, who was laughing together, tapped Yard’s shoulder with a bitter face.
“Well, your concern is obvious. Were you thinking about Chief Zavan?”
At that question, Yard let out a small sigh as if he had no choice.
“Yes. Today, I saw someone who performs a similar art to me.”
“What?!”
When the Proxy Chief stood up in surprise, Yard gestured for him to calm down and said,
“After talking to him, it doesn’t seem like he knows Chief Zavan.”
“No, but isn’t he still connected, even if through someone else?”
Yard also nodded in agreement with the Proxy Chief’s guess.
“That’s right, isn’t it? So I invited him to tonight’s performance.”
Yard put the joker card he was holding into the deck and muttered,
“I hope I can get even a small hint about the chief.”
Precia and I wore masks and pulled down the hoods of our shabby coats.
The coat itself was common, but wearing a mask would draw attention, so we covered it twice with the hood.
“Where are we going that we’re covering up like this?”
At Precia’s question, I looked around and examined the surrounding buildings.
“The place I’m going to is a detective agency that deals with VIPs. It’s connected to the black market and handles not only illegal trades and information deals but also dirty work.”
A small, dilapidated cathedral with a statue of an angel with one wing broken and a town square clock tower visible across from it.
Remembering the description in the novel, this seemed to be the right place.
“Why are you looking for such a place? Ah, are you going to request them to find that pharmacist old man’s granddaughter?”
I waved my hand at Precia’s guess.
“No way, that old man is at the top of Dokwon’s assassination list. This place is also connected to Dokwon, so if we find the old man’s granddaughter through here, not only the old man but also the granddaughter will be assassinated.”
“Ah….”
“So it’s worse than not finding her.”
Precia looked at me as if asking why I was looking for the detective agency then.
“I came here to deal with a fool. I can’t even approach them without the detective agency acting as a bridge.”
“A fool?”
“Yes, a fool.”
The fool I’m looking for is ‘The Foolish Sage Abassael’.
Abassael was a promising student at a magic school in the past and a talented magician who was selected as the youngest Supreme Mage of the magic tower.
But that fool became unable to use magic due to a certain incident and fell into the abyss.
“Ah, found it.”
I put my hand into the dog hole in the cathedral wall and fumbled around.
Then I felt a small wad of paper.
When I pulled the wad of paper, a thin string was attached, which was connected to a bell that alerted the arrival of a customer.
“Give me the paints and brushes we bought earlier.”
I took the paints and brushes from Precia, dipped the brush in red paint, and wrote something in ancient language on the paper.
As I put the wad of paper back into the dog hole, I brought my index finger to my mouth.
“Shh, from now on, don’t speak without my permission, and be ready to run away at any time.”
At my request, Precia nodded silently.
Soon, the sound of stepping on gravel was heard from beyond the wall, and a presence was felt.
The leisurely footsteps started moving busily only after reading the paper.
And not long after, a woman in a nun’s attire came out of the cathedral.
“Please come inside.”
The nun, who seemed to have a friendly impression, guided us into the old cathedral.
As if we weren’t the first customers to cover our faces like Precia and me, the nun headed to the lounge with familiarity and lifted a large painting hung on the lounge wall, revealing an entrance leading underground.
“Please go in, customers.”
When I went in without hesitation at the nun’s words, Precia followed me in, seeming slightly tense.
As the nun lowered the painting outside, the surroundings suddenly darkened, and the interior was illuminated by magically created lights.
Wow, so this is what magic can do.
I was also studying with Aquila’s grimoire, but I could barely create a fire the size of a candle at my level.
As we kept going down the stairs, a space that seemed like a salon appeared.
“Welcome, we welcome you to our ‘Boutique’. Please have a seat.”
When a green-haired boy with a good impression invited us, I sat leisurely on the prepared sofa, and Precia stood half a step behind me as if waiting.
The green-haired boy of the detective agency ‘Boutique’.
If there wasn’t another green-haired person I didn’t know, the boy in front of me would be ‘Julian Schultz’, who would become the owner who dominates the Boutique in the future.
The boy spoke to me without even glancing at Precia.
“But the red mark, it’s the first time. I thought you would leave the blue mark as usual, so I was surprised.”
At Julian’s words, I smiled lightly and answered.
“The master had an urgent matter.”
The Boutique did business targeting VIPs, so contact itself was impossible without the introduction of an existing member.
That’s why I left the mark of one of the Boutique members I knew.
The owner of that mark was the empress’s, or more precisely, the count’s, who was the empress’s brother.
Of course, the empress used it much more frequently than the count who was far away from the capital.
By the way, there were two types of marks in total. The red letters I left meant there was an urgent matter to attend to right now, and the blue letters meant the Boutique’s dispatch staff should come to the designated place.
“I see! We happened to have obtained the item you entrusted us with last time. Should I show you the items as usual? Or should we handle the urgent matter you mentioned first?”
Oho~! I wonder what the empress prepared.
At his words, I pretended to think for a moment and then answered.
“Even if it’s urgent, it’s something that can be handled by today, so let’s see the items first. Ah, of course, the payment will be made later as usual.”
“Yes, of course. You can pay on your regular payment date. Now then, bring the items.”
As expected, it was convenient in this aspect when dealing with VIPs.
When Julian clapped his hands, a curtain on one side of the wall was drawn, and various jeweled accessories, dresses, expensive spices, and magical tools were lined up and brought in.
At the sight of the dazzling array of luxury goods that she had never seen before in her life, Precia swallowed her saliva.
I slowly got up from my seat and asked in a leisurely voice.
“My master is a very strict person. There won’t be any problems with the quality, right?”
“Of course! I am confident that everything here is of the highest quality, I stake my life on it!”
As I approached the items, the woman in a nun’s attire who brought the goods brought white gloves placed on a luxurious support and offered them to me.
I skillfully put on the white gloves and pretended to appraise them carefully.
Of course, I had no guilt whatsoever about cheating them.
