Chapter 15 - Investment is in a Pile of Trash (4)
At the end of the street market, if you go through a secluded alley, you come to a place where the taverns frequented by laborers are gathered.
It wasn’t exactly a decadent red-light district, but it was a place frequented by laborers because it was close to the pier, which was their main workplace, and it sold cheap, low-quality alcohol.
Seeing a shabby tavern with a sign that said “Drunks Not Welcome” as described in the novel, I turned into the left alley.
“Hmm, is this the place?”
The old store Precia and I arrived at had a skull mark and a medicine bottle painted on a wooden plank instead of a sign.
Looking at the building that didn’t seem at all like a place that saves people’s lives, Precia was half in doubt.
“Is this the place you mentioned?”
I was also half in doubt.
In the first place, I found this place by guessing based on the contents of the novel, so I couldn’t be sure.
“Let’s go inside.”
I opened the creaky door and went inside.
The interior was old like the outside, but it seemed to be regularly cleaned as there was no dust piled up.
“Who is it?”
A raspy voice was heard, and a scrawny old man came out from inside.
Judging from the thick eyebrows, the wart under his left eye, the burn marks on his chin and neck, the sunken eyes, the scratches on his arms, and the trembling hand holding the cane, they were the aftereffects of drugs.
It seemed I had found the right place.
“I heard there is a skilled pharmacist here, so I came to see you.”
At my words, Poison Master Divet snorted.
“Ha! There’s no skilled pharmacist here. You came to the wrong place, so get lost.”
I laughed softly at his grumpy voice.
“Aren’t you Debibu?”
“I am Debibu, but everyone calls me a quack. It seems someone introduced me as a skilled pharmacist somewhere and swindled money, so you got scammed.”
Divet scoffed and waved his hand, indicating for us to leave, and turned to go back inside.
It seemed he had no intention of doing business despite having the store open.
“Well, of course people would call you a quack since you’re a pharmacist addicted to drugs. Divet Fabibu.”
When I said his real name, he turned around and glared at me.
I asked him with a playful expression, ignoring his angry gaze.
“Why? Do you not like your real name? Then should I call you Poison Master?”
At the words Poison Master, the old man growled like a tiger.
“Who are you! How do you know my identity?! Don’t tell me…! Are you guys sent by Dokwon(毒源)!”
Divet took out a small bead from his pocket with his trembling hand.
“Precia! Stop him!”
At my order, Precia moved at an invisible speed and subdued Divet.
“Ugh! How is this wench so strong!”
Even if he had strength far exceeding that of a decent knight when he was young, there was no way he could defeat Precia with his old, drug-ridden body.
I snatched the bead from Divet’s twisted hand.
This bead was a terrifying weapon that, when broken, would release the poisonous gas inside and kill everyone around.
Of course, it wouldn’t work on Divet, who had resistance to poison.
I got a good thing.
It seemed like it would be useful later, so I safely put it in the ingredient warehouse.
“Look here, old man. I think you misunderstood, but I am not someone sent by trash like Dokwon.”
“What?”
Divet looked up at me with an uncomprehending face.
It was natural, since there was no way that Dokwon, which was rotten with the notion that they could control people’s lives, would call themselves trash.
“Um, young master. What is Dokwon?”
I briefly explained to Precia’s question.
“Good question. Dokwon was a small gathering where doctors and pharmacists shared knowledge and researched ways to use poison as medicine. Its original name wasn’t even Dokwon.”
“Oh… Then isn’t it a good place?”
Divet snapped at Precia’s question.
“That place isn’t so virtuous!”
At Divet’s shout, Precia looked at me. I took out cheap alcohol, wet my throat, and continued.
“Dokwon’s founding purpose was good. But as time passed, unlike its original purpose, a faction emerged that wanted to use their knowledge and abilities for selfish gain, and as time went on, that faction began to take over the group.”
At my words, Divet trembled.
His face was filled with regret.
“I guess the leader of that faction was you? Poison Master, Divet Fabibu.”
“That’s…!”
I looked for a glass nearby, poured the alcohol into a cleaned beaker, and placed it in front of Divet, who bowed his head.
“The Dokwon that Divet’s faction took over accumulated wealth by selling not medicine but poison, and even conducted human experiments for more effective poisons.”
“N-no! I…!”
“You didn’t do things like human experiments? Yes, you did. You.”
Receiving my cold gaze, Divet trembled with shame.
No matter how much one decided to act for selfish gain, human experiments that were not even verified, and for the purpose of killing rather than saving, were the ultimate taboo.
Even if he insisted that he didn’t do it himself, he was the one who made Dokwon into such a group.
“Despite your origin of being a doctor and pharmacist, you tried to stop Dokwon from going astray and were expelled, and your daughter and son-in-law, whom you so desperately wanted to save and had tenaciously saved money for, were killed by Dokwon.”
It was a shame, but it could only be called karmic retribution for what he had done.
Though his innocent daughter and her husband were pitiful.
“…What the hell. Who are you? How do you know my past!”
“I….”
When I was about to give my prepared answer, someone opened the door and came in.
“Grandpa! Today’s cleaning… What the! Who are you guys!”
The brown-haired boy who came in with a lively greeting was outraged at the sight of Divet being subdued.
“Let go of Grandpa right now!”
Seeing the boy suddenly rushing at us, Precia tried to draw her sword while holding Divet’s arm with one hand.
I raised my hand to stop Precia and shouted.
“Navi! Suffocate!”
-Nya~!
Navi revealed herself and created a vacuum state around the boy’s face as practiced beforehand.
“!”
The boy grabbed his neck in bewilderment as he suddenly couldn’t breathe.
I guess you can’t hear his voice because there’s no air around him.
As the boy’s face turned red and his pupils dilated, I instructed Navi to release the vacuum state again.
“Hah!”
The boy, who was roughly inhaling, soon fainted and collapsed on the ground.
“Gil!”
When Divet cried out worrying about the boy, I shrugged.
“He just fainted, so don’t worry. I’m not a bad guy who would kill someone in a place that saves people’s lives.”
He seemed to be breathing properly, so it was fine.
Wait, but did Divet call that kid ‘Gil’? Could it be Gilbert?
Nah, no way. Although they seemed to know each other in the novel, it didn’t seem like this grumpy old man and Gilbert would know each other this early.
I said with a refreshing smile.
“Well~! There was a little commotion. Let’s continue our business.”
At my words, Divet glared at me.
“Who the hell are you! If not Dokwon, where are you from!”
I shrugged at Divet’s shout.
“But if I introduce myself, would you really believe me? I am the prince of this country and came from the palace.”
When I casually revealed the truth as if it was no big deal, Precia was surprised.
But Divet gritted his teeth, thinking I was making fun of him.
“You bastard…!”
“And I think you misunderstood something, but I am not your enemy. I’m just a customer who came to request you to make medicine, not poison. The important thing is whether we can give each other what we want, isn’t it?”
Divet gritted his teeth at my cheeky question.
“As if I would willingly believe your words…!”
“Don’t you want to find your separated granddaughter?”
When I interrupted and asked, Divet’s eyes widened.
“My, my granddaughter can be found…?”
“Just as I know about you and thoroughly investigated you, I am a person with more talents than I look. How about it? If you like what I’m offering, let’s have a drink.”
I smiled kindly and gestured to Precia to release his restraint.
Divet, now free, hesitated for a moment, then downed the drink in front of him as if he had resolved to make a deal with the devil.
“If what you said is a lie, you will die by my hands.”
Geez, he’s too much when I approach him with good intentions.
………..
Precia looked at Divet, who was making the medicine I requested with the ingredients I gave him, and asked doubtfully.
“Is he really such an amazing person?”
“Of course, there are only a handful of pharmacists in this world better than that old man.”
Of course, that’s based on his prime.
Originally, he was one of the top doctors, but he couldn’t use his medical skills much due to the tremors caused by the side effects of drugs.
“Old man! How about quitting drugs and getting treatment now so you won’t be ashamed in front of your granddaughter?”
“Shut up!”
Divet answered my playful advice nervously and focused on making the medicine.
“But I didn’t know you also had knowledge in pharmacology, young master. You even picked out the ingredients to use for making the medicine.”
I chuckled at Precia’s admiration.
“Well, I like books, you know.”
I just told him the ingredients and manufacturing method of the medicine Jade made in the novel.
“But what are you making?”
“Medicine for mana imbalance syndrome and severed meridian syndrome.”
Of course, it wasn’t for me to take, but for getting Gilbert.
Gilbert’s younger sister suffered from an extremely rare disease from birth and required long-term treatment.
Divet, who was making the medicine, glanced at me with an irritated gaze and asked.
“You bastard, where did you learn this manufacturing method? No, before that, if you know this manufacturing method, can’t you make it yourself?”
Judging from the way he spoke, it seemed he still suspected I was from Dokwon.
“Aren’t you better at it than me, old man? The performance of medicine or poison varies greatly depending on who makes it. Wouldn’t it be better to have a more effective one?”
Honestly, I couldn’t guarantee that it would work if I made it.
“Hmph! That’s true.”
Divet laughed arrogantly, becoming conceited.
“But you two don’t seem to be related to these diseases, so who are you going to give this medicine to?”
“That medicine is….”
I was about to answer Divet’s question when the brown-haired boy lying in the corner abruptly got up.
“Grandpa! Hah! Hah! I-is this a dream?”
Divet hit the back of the head of the boy who hadn’t come to his senses yet.
“It’s not a dream, so come to your senses, you brat!”
“Ouch!”
The boy who was holding his hit head discovered Precia and me and hurriedly grabbed a nearby iron ladle and shouted.
“Grandpa! Get away! I’ll handle this, ouch!”
Divet hit the boy’s head one more time and snatched the ladle.
“Get away from what, you fool! If you have nothing to do, go make tea for the ‘guests’.”
Calling the person who brought the information he desperately wanted a ‘guest’ is too much.
The boy, not understanding the current situation, made a dumbfounded expression and started boiling water while fidgeting.
I chuckled, looking at the brown hair.
“I think you misunderstood something, but the situation you witnessed wasn’t us attacking that grumpy old man, but us subduing the old man who was trying to attack us.”
Of course, it was me who suddenly revealed his hidden identity though.
“Oh, is that so?”
“That’s right. But what’s your name?”
When I asked, thinking he might be Divet’s apprentice, the boy answered in a lively voice.
“It’s Gilbert, Gilbert Asan.”
Hearing the boy’s name, I widened my eyes and looked at Gilbert.
“Gilbert? Do you happen to have a younger sibling? A sickly younger sister.”
“Huh? How did you know?”
I didn’t expect to meet one of the main purposes of today’s outing like this.
Then it’s strange.
Gilbert knows Divet, but Divet can’t treat her?
Gilbert’s younger sister dies about 3 years and 6 months from now.
The cause of death was mana rampage due to the worsening of mana imbalance caused by severed meridian syndrome.
When Jade met Gilbert’s younger sister, it was already too late to do anything.
All Jade could do was relieve the pain of her body being torn apart and buy time for her to leave her last words.
Even that was enough for Gilbert to pledge loyalty to Jade.
But now, there was still a lot of time left.
Of course, expensive medicinal herbs were needed for a complete cure, but with Divet’s skills, extending her life should be more than enough.
Then why didn’t he treat her?
Could it be… No, it can’t be.
But if there was a possibility, there was only one.
