40: Zombies!
The young woman before him suddenly vanished. As Zhao Yun sensed something amiss, Chu Sang appeared ghost-like behind him.
She kicked him down with one foot,
“Go, Pikachu!”
Before them was a sunken altar. Chu Sang unceremoniously kicked Zhao Yun into the center of the altar. Broken stones cut his arm, and a trickle of fresh blood seeped down, flowing into the altar’s patterns.
The altar seemed to come alive, devouring the blood entirely. In just a few breaths, the patterns turned blood-red, revealing an immense and complex formation.
A blinding light flashed, and the unremarkable cave around them transformed into a different scene. An entrance appeared before Chu Sang’s eyes.
The passage was pitch black, its depths invisible. No one knew whether opportunities or dangers lay hidden within.
“It’s the entrance to the secret realm. Let’s hurry in!”
Everyone was extremely excited, jostling to squeeze in first.
“Make way for this young master!” Zhao Yun’s heart burned with anticipation. He had no time to dwell on his recent humiliation and scrambled up from the ground to enter.
However, before they could even set half a foot inside, crimson golden chains shot out from behind like pythons, tightly binding their limbs. With a violent pull downward, they fell ungracefully on their backsides.
Though only a step away from the entrance, they couldn’t move an inch.
This was even more unbearable than being killed!
“Fifth Senior Brother’s creations are truly effective. The Immortal-Binding Chain, a high-grade spirit tool, should have no problem restraining you for a while.”
Chu Sang dusted off her hands and walked up to them, picking up the scroll map that had fallen to the ground. She whistled cheerfully at the contorted-faced Zhao Yun, “Thanks for leading the way these past few days. Consider this map as payment for saving you earlier. No need to express your gratitude for such a great favor. Farewell!”
“Aaaaaah—I’ll kill you!”
Zhao Yun finally realized he had been deceived all along, so enraged that his lungs felt like they would explode.
The hysterical roars of anger quickly faded behind them. Upon entering the passage, their vision was obscured. Chu Sang summoned a wisp of spirit fire on her fingertip, illuminating their surroundings slightly.
After ensuring they were far from those people, Chu Sang and her companions peeled off the human skin masks on their faces. These were also small spirit tools crafted by Su Chen’an called [Thousand Faces]. They could freely change into over a thousand different appearances, very convenient for deceiving people when out and about. However, these couldn’t be worn for too long, or there was a risk of skin damage.
“Be careful,” Chu Sang said, taking a few steps forward and twitching her ears. “There might be traps.”
Just as she finished speaking, Tantai Ming in front seemed to step on something. A crisp “click” sounded, followed by the sound of mechanisms turning in the walls. Tens of thousands of spirit arrows shot towards them.
Chu Sang quickly tossed out a golden cauldron to shield them from above, neutralizing the arrow attack.
Before setting out, Fifth Senior Brother had given her a bag full of spirit tools and magic treasures. Having an artificer as a senior brother was indeed convenient.
Tantai Ming unleashed a fierce sword qi, destroying the mechanism. The arrows stopped firing.
Before they could catch their breath, Mu Chihuai casually pressed his palm against the stone wall. With just a light push, a section sank in. “……This is bad.”
One problem after another. Though the tunnel wasn’t particularly long, it took them a full half day to finally reach the end.
Tantai Ming had swung his sword tens of thousands of times. He twisted his sore wrist, “I feel like I’m about to break through.”
At the end of the passage were three paths.
On the surface, they appeared no different.
However, only one was the path of life; the other two led to death.
Zhao Yun must have known about this in advance, which was why he wanted to use them as bait to explore ahead.
Chu Sang examined them briefly, then said without hesitation, “Take the middle one.”
She always trusted her luck.

“Ahhh—”
A scream rang out from mid-air.
They had taken the correct path, but who could have imagined that the exit would be a thousand-foot-high cliff??
Tantai Ming reacted quickly, throwing out his sword to step on and landing gracefully on one knee.
Another figure fell from above.
Tantai Ming caught him swiftly. Just as Mu Chihuai felt touched that this blockhead had finally done something right, he was unceremoniously tossed to the ground. Tantai Ming dashed forward to catch Chu Sang, “Little Junior Sister, are you alright? See how accurately I caught you!”
Mu Chihuai: “……” He gritted his teeth as he got up. Very well, he had decided on his poison test subject for the next half month.
On the other side, Chengying and Sikong Qiu also landed safely.
Although the journey was perilous, everyone emerged unscathed. It had to be said that Little Junior Sister’s luck was ridiculously good.
Chu Sang looked up. She hadn’t expected the exit to be so tricky. She told her senior brothers and sisters to wait for her a moment, then flew back into the cave on her sword, returning to the three gates. She took out a piece of paper and casually wrote a few large characters—
“Exit Here”
She stuck it on the middle passage.
Tantai Ming saw her come down and asked, “What did you go back to do just now?”
Chu Sang smiled sweetly and innocently, “I did a good deed.”
Seeing his little junior sister’s smile, Tantai Ming felt a chill down his spine. Someone else was about to be in trouble.
The inner realm didn’t look much different from the outer secret realm. It was rugged and treacherous. A casual sweep with divine sense revealed several spirit beasts prowling nearby, all of high levels. Any one of them would be troublesome to deal with.
Was the Chaos Blue Lotus that Zhao Yun and the others mentioned really in this place?
“This inner realm is the innermost part of the secret realm. The spirit beasts here are far stronger than those we encountered before. Everyone must be extremely cautious,” Chengying said, looking at the darkening sky. He spoke softly, “Night has fallen. It’s the time when spirit beasts hunt. It’s not advisable to move about.”
“The night is deep, and the dew is thick. Let’s rest for the night and set out early tomorrow morning.”
“Alright.”
They found a secluded cave nearby. Chengying took out two blankets, “You rest first. I’ll keep watch.”
Tantai Ming yawned and raised his hand, “I’ll take over in the second half of the night.”
Chu Sang also took out several defensive formation disks from her Qiankun bag and placed them around. At the same time, she pasted several concealment talismans at the cave entrance.
In the middle of the night, as she was sleeping soundly, she seemed to hear some rustling sounds.
The downside of having overly sensitive divine sense was that even the slightest noise could wake her.
Chu Sang slowly opened her eyes in the darkness and got up. She saw flickering green ghost fires in the dense forest not far away. At the same time, strange footsteps were approaching their direction.
……Could it be spirit beasts?
Chengying naturally heard the sounds too. His gaze turned cold as he drew his sword Chengying, his entire body tense.
As the fires drew nearer, Chu Sang realized they weren’t ghost fires at all, but pairs of green skeletal eyes. And those approaching objects—weren’t they white-haired zombies??
Zombies are extremely sensitive to the life essence of living beings. Even with concealment talismans and formations, they seemed to dance about aimlessly at first, but quickly surrounded the cave, repeatedly attempting to break through the formation.
Under the collective assault of hundreds or thousands of zombies, the formation wavered noticeably, unable to hold out for long.
“……How can there be zombies here?!” Sikong Qiu’s face turned pale.
While secret realms like this, rich in spiritual energy, often give birth to many powerful spirit beasts, sinister creatures like zombies should never appear!
Unless someone deliberately created them.
The Yunze Secret Realm opens once every hundred years. Each time it opens, thousands upon thousands of cultivators rush in.
Among them are low-level cultivators seeking fortune in danger, overconfident cultivators, and unlucky cultivators…… Each time the secret realm opens, more than half of the cultivators perish within.
From another perspective, the secret realm is not only a place of blessing but also a massive burial ground.
Some ghost and demon cultivators take advantage of this, sneaking in to use the natural mass grave to raise corpses, turning it into a large-scale corpse-raising ground for their own use.
Unexpectedly, they encountered this situation as soon as they entered.
Everyone’s hearts sank.
These white zombies weren’t particularly high-level, but their sheer numbers made them extremely troublesome to deal with.
The worst fear was that the commotion and the scent of blood might attract nearby spirit beasts or even more powerful zombies.
That would be the real trouble.
The best solution was to lure them away first. When daylight came, these white zombies would disappear on their own.
“Young Miss, stay with the immortal cultivators from the sect. Don’t get lost. I’ll go lure them away.”
“Be careful,” Sikong Qiu said worriedly.
“Don’t worry, this subordinate will be fine.” Chengying nodded to Chu Sang and the others, “Please take good care of the Young Miss, immortal cultivators.”
With that, he tore off the concealment talisman on his body and rushed out of the formation. In an instant, tens of thousands of zombies stirred like cats catching the scent of blood, frantically pouncing towards him!
Chengying unsheathed his long sword, decapitating over a dozen white zombies with one swing, then leapt into the deep forest.
With his strength at mid Golden Core stage, dealing with these white zombies wasn’t particularly difficult, but their sheer numbers made a prolonged battle unsustainable.
He had an idea and led hundreds or thousands of zombies in the opposite direction.
This place was a thousand-foot-high steep cliff.
These low-level white zombies could only move by jumping. Once they fell off the cliff, they would have a hard time getting back up.
Chu Sang and the others took the opportunity to climb to a safer location at a higher altitude.
Along the way, they encountered some straggling zombies, but far fewer than before. Chu Sang and Tantai Ming led the way, quickly dispatching these few dozen zombies.
“I’m sorry, I’ve been useless this whole journey, always holding you back. I should have known better and not come…” Sikong Qiu had fallen behind several times due to lack of stamina, nearly getting caught by zombies. It was always Chu Sang who saved her, even risking injury several times.
Sikong Qiu clutched her sleeve, feeling deeply guilty.
As a senior sister, she should have been protecting her junior sister, but she had been completely useless, even causing trouble several times.
Compared to the once-in-a-century supreme-grade Heavenly Spirit Root, a Five Element Root could be considered an even more extraordinarily rare existence.
Only it was extraordinarily useless.
Sikong Qiu’s current early Foundation Establishment cultivation was mostly achieved through her father spending over a million spirit stones to forcefully raise it with pills. One can imagine how much more arduous her cultivation journey would be compared to ordinary cultivators.
If she hadn’t been born into a wealthy family, she might never have been able to step onto the path of immortal cultivation in this lifetime.
In the past, when going out for training with her senior and junior brothers and sisters, she was always the one holding everyone back. If it weren’t for Chengying always staying by her side to protect her, she probably would have died countless times already.
This was also an unresolvable mental affliction for Sikong Qiu.
In fact, the karmic obstacle and heart demon that would trouble her in the future had already taken root at this moment.
[Sikong Qiu’s Corruption Value: 30]
Chu Sang frowned slightly, recalling some plot points from the original story.

As dawn broke, all the white zombies hissed and evaporated. Chengying returned not long after.
He had inevitably sustained some injuries. His right arm had been scratched by a flying zombie, leaving three claw marks. That patch of skin had turned a horrifying zombie-like blue-gray color. Without hesitation, he drew a dagger and cut away that piece of flesh.
Throughout the process, he didn’t even furrow his brow.
Chu Sang couldn’t help but marvel at how incredible this person was, almost seeming inhuman.
Sikong Qiu used medicine to bandage his arm. Apart from looking slightly pale, he showed no other signs of distress.
“The zombies will reappear as soon as night falls. We must make haste,” Chu Sang said, taking out the scroll map she had ‘borrowed’ from Zhao Yun. She glanced at it a couple of times to memorize the directions, then led them deeper into the secret realm.
Before half a day had passed, they encountered other groups – disciples from the Ten Thousand Swords Sect and the Beast Taming Sect.
Disciples from the Eight Great Sects and various powerful families had all come to the Yunze Secret Realm.
But very few could enter the inner realm.
The two major sects had just happened to meet and agreed to cooperate.
They had also encountered zombies the previous night and were exhausted from the ordeal. They all looked deflated.
“Chu Sang!”
Lin Qi’s eyes lit up as he ran over, “I didn’t expect to meet you here! You didn’t team up with other sects but came on your own?”
Chu Sang nodded, also surprised to encounter a familiar face.
“This secret realm is incredibly dangerous. We encountered zombies last night, and who knows what we’ll run into today… Why don’t we travel together?”
Lin Qi remembered that Chu Sang had plenty of talisman treasures. His instincts told him that following Chu Sang would definitely lead to an exciting adventure.
It would greatly increase their sense of security.
“Alright,” Chu Sang nodded. These people were relatively trustworthy, and the inner realm was indeed dangerous. Their group’s strength wasn’t sufficient to roam the secret realm freely yet.
As night fell, they set up camp.
This time, they found a hidden hilltop. Looking down at the dense mass of zombies emerging from the forest, wandering aimlessly along the mountain paths, with occasional eerie corpse cries drifting to their ears… The scene was indescribably horrifying, beyond words.
Chu Sang rubbed her arms, noticing that everyone’s expressions weren’t good. Shen Rufei was an exception; he was looking at his jade slip back and forth, surrounded by an aura of melancholy.
“Hey, what’s wrong with your senior brother?” Chu Sang sat down beside the Beast Taming Sect’s little junior sister.
Ge Xiang looked at the group of ugly zombies at the foot of the mountain, unable to even eat her bean cake. She sighed, “You get used to it. Senior Brother has been acting weird for a year now, and it’s gotten worse these past two months.”
“Don’t mind him. He probably got dumped.”
Chu Sang gossiped, “I wouldn’t have guessed. Shen Rufei usually looks like the picture of a refined gentleman. I didn’t expect he’d get dumped too.”
“Right? I heard the other person even called him useless, leaving him depressed for several months now,” Ge Xiang said.
Chu Sang thought that person had quite a sharp tongue.
No man could bear to hear those two words, right?
Chu Sang: “What did she call your senior brother?”
Ge Xiang thought for a moment, “I think it was something like, ‘Useless, don’t come near me.'”
Chu Sang: “……”
That phrase… why does it sound so familiar?
It couldn’t be such a coincidence, could it?
