Chapter 20: Sacrifice and the Journey.
The tension in the room thickened as Whitebeard, sitting at the table with his signature grin, downed large gulps from a barrel of sake. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand before speaking, his voice deep and commanding. "So, why did you pretend to be dead? And why choose to reappear only now?"
I met his gaze calmly. "Because I was a threat to the World Government," I began, my tone steady. "They would have gone to any lengths to eliminate me, just like they targeted unborn ace after Roger's death. If I had stayed, the Whitebeard Pirates would have been at the top of their target list! earlier than they already were because of Ace."
Whitebeard's grin faded slightly as he considered my words, but before he could respond, Jozu slammed his fist on the table, his voice brimming with indignation. "Do you mean to say Pops couldn't handle them? He's the strongest man in the world!"
I turned to Jozu, my voice rising slightly as I responded. "No, Pops can handle them. But I wasn't talking about him, I was talking about you lot. Do you think Pops could protect every single one of you, all the time? You underestimate the full strength of the World Government. You are strong, Jozu, you all are but you're uninformed."
The room fell silent, the weight of my words sinking in.
"I chose to cut myself off from you for that very reason," I continued, my voice softening. "If I'd stayed, Pops wouldn't have allowed me to fake my death. He'd have faced the World Government head on, just like what he did at Marineford. And it would have led to unnecessary sacrifices from all of you."
I paused, letting my words sink in before continuing. "Some of the senior cadres of the Roger Pirates are still alive because they forced the World Government to compromise. Only Roger himself paid the ultimate price as he was already going to die. If I had stayed with you, the same compromise would not have been possible. They would have hunted you all down, one by one at a time."
All eyes turned to Rayleigh, who gave a solemn nod of acknowledgment. "He's right. We survived because Roger made it clear his sacrifice was the end of the fight. If the World Government took action against any of us we planned to create more chaos than Roger's execution did, so they didn't dare to push any further against the rest of us and take any chances."
"How did you knew all of this. We made sure we don't contact each other and stay quiet. Even Shanks and Buggy weren't aware of our plans" The room grew quieter, "did you forgot how I deciphered the Poneglyph?, Oro Jackson conveyed me everything Rayleigh. I have long since mastered The Voice of All Things"
I leaned back slightly, my gaze distant. "It all started on Fish-Man Island," I said, my voice steady. "When I decoded the Poneglyph there with the help of 'TheVoiceofAllThings'. This fact was only supposed to be known to Senior cadres of Roger Pirates, yet it somehow spread."
"Shanks, do you remember the sudden increase in the bounties of all the senior cadres and mine after we left Fishmen Island?" Gasps rippled through the room. "We also started encountering Marines more frequently since then" confirmed Buggy.
"You can read the Poneglyphs?" Marco asked, his tone laced with disbelief. "I can do much more than that" I said with a small chuckle.
"During that time there were only three people who knew how to decipher Poneglyphs Oden, Roger and me. Oden after splitting with Roger's crew went to Wano which was already fell under Kaido's rule. Roger was executed only I was left."
"Who do you guys think the World Government would go after? I was young and ambitious, I was probably the number 1 target on their hit list and the Whitebeard Pirates would be targeted because of me."
"Scholars of Ohara were secretly researching the Void century. This was somehow known to the World Government. They initiated the Buster call to massacre Ohara with it's citizens for the same reason to keep anyone from learning the true history of the Void century."
"Nico Robin of the Straw Hat Pirates was the sole survivor of that incident and currently the only other person other than me who can decipher Poneglyphs in this whole world according to my knowledge as Roger was executed and Oden died before he could teach his kids how to read the ancient texts"
"Roger's partiing words for me made me plan all this as Cipher Pol 0 already started targeting me, 'Take care of yourself and stay alert kid' these were the last words he said to me." I sighed reminiscing the past, then suddenly chuckled "Even though he was dying, he was trying to be cool" I said.
Everybody was hearing calm as I was talking. "Why did you just decided to appear now?" asked Vista gaining everyone's attention.
"Nothing I just completed my journey and resting when my wife Gyeong who's incharge of keeping taps on you lot filled me in the current situation which lead me to interfere during the war."
"Journey? Where to?" It was Rayleigh and Shanks who asked me at the same time and glanced at each other.
"Journey to Raftel obviously or should I say Laugh Tale as per what Captain Roger named it." Shanks and Rayleigh were looking at me as if doubting something. Looking back at them I said with a smile."Don't look at me like that. I'm definitely not the fated person Captain Roger was waiting for."
The room fell into a stunned silence, the weight of my words pressing down on everyone. The mention of Raftel - Laugh Tale had the power to shake even these seasoned pirates to their core.
"You've been to Raftel?" Blamenco and Buggy asked, their voice barely above a whisper, their disbelief mirroring that of others.
I leaned back in my chair, folding my arms as I met their gazes. "Yes, I have. I completed the journey that Roger did. But before you ask no, the one Captain Roger was waiting for. The person, the one who will truly bring the dawn, hasn't awakened yet."
Shanks' and Rayleigh's expressions softened, though the doubt in their eyes lingered.
"Then why go there?" Whitebeard's deep voice broke the silence. He had set down his barrel and was watching me with a mixture of curiosity and respect.
"Because I promised these oldies that I'll go there with my own ability and a crew far better and stronger then them and I needed to see it for myself," I said, my voice calm but firm.
"The truth about the Void Century, the One Piece, the true nature of this world. It's something that can't simply be told. It has to be experienced. But that truth… it's not mine to share, not yet."
"Convenient," Buggy muttered, earning a chuckle from Shanks and a glare from me. I smirked. "Believe what you will, Big Brother Buggy by the way don't look for Captain John's treasure, Ochoku's already dug and used it up."
Buggy just raised his eyebrows and kept quiet.
