Chapter 2: CH: 2
The heat of the Spectral Core pulsed within me, sharpening my senses even further. The fragments of the memories of the previous owner of this body began to come together, forming a coherent image. This gem was not just a recovery tool; it was a demonic artifact designed to accelerate cultivation at a price. But he was not someone who hesitated at the consequences. Strength was strength, and in a world like this, the weak never survived for long.
The forest around me remained still, except for the occasional crunch of leaves under my feet. My steps became firmer, more confident, as the Core restored the qi reserves in my battered body. I kept my aura contained; any reckless burst of energy would attract attention, and I wasn't ready for another fight yet. Not until I consolidated my gains.
I ventured deeper into the forest, guided by the faint glow of the moonlight that pierced through the dense underbrush. My heightened perception picked up subtle noises around me: branches moving, leaves whispering. At first, I thought it was the wind, but the rhythm was too deliberate.
Something was stalking me.
I stopped dead in my tracks, planting my feet firmly and centering my weight. In the silence that followed, I heard it: a soft, low, guttural growl coming from the shadows to my right. The sound was not animal. This was something else. Something more cunning.
A quick flow of qi coursed through my legs, and I propelled myself backward just in time to dodge a blade that sliced through the air where I had been a second before. A hooded figure emerged into the moonlight, wielding a curved dagger with runes that glowed faintly. Behind them, two more figures emerged from the trees, with sharp and menacing auras.
They were not Divine Judges. Their clothes lacked the rigid emblems of the sect. Mercenaries, perhaps, or renegade cultivators seeking weak prey on the fringes. Whatever it was, they had made a fatal mistake.
The leader spoke, his voice laced with arrogance.
"Hand over the artifact, and maybe we'll let you crawl out of here."
I smiled disdainfully, flexing my fingers as I channeled the energy of the Core.
"Do you really think you can take it from me?"
They hesitated, just for an instant, but it was enough to tell me they weren't sure of their advantage. Even so, they advanced, their movements quick and coordinated. The leader lunged at me, feinting high before attacking low, while one of the others tried to flank me. I sidestepped, turning my body just enough to avoid the blade of the dagger, and responded with an explosion of demonic qi.
The wave of energy caught the flanker by surprise, slamming him against a tree with a nauseating crunch. His body fell to the ground, lifeless.
The leader's eyes narrowed, and his movements became more cautious.
"A demonic cultivator, huh?" No wonder you're so arrogant.
I didn't respond. Talking was a waste of time. Instead, I moved quickly, closing the distance between us. My movements were more precise now, the energy of the Core flowing through me. The leader deflected my blow, but the force made him stagger. His companion tried to intervene, throwing a spear at my side, but I spun around him and struck with a qi-enhanced fist to his chest. The impact shattered bones, and he fell with a strangled gasp.
Only the leader remained. His confidence had vanished, replaced by a desperate resolve. He threw a smoke bomb to the ground, and a thick cloud enveloped the area. I felt his presence fading away, but I wasn't going to let him escape.
I channeled the Shadow Step technique, moving through the mist like a specter, reaching him in seconds. I reappeared in front of him, my hand already charged with energy. His eyes widened when I struck him, the force of my attack piercing through his defenses. He fell to the ground, coughing up blood, his dagger clinking uselessly by his side.
I crouched down, grabbing him by the collar of his clothes.
"Who sent you?"
He spat blood, his defiance flickering even in the face of death.
"Nobody... We saw the light. We thought you would be an easy target."
I didn't waste any more words. My hand glowed with dark energy, and I plunged it into his chest, absorbing the last vestige of his qi. His body collapsed, and I stood up, feeling the torrent of stolen energy reinforcing my own reserves. Pathetic fools.
The air around the clearing grew colder, heavy with the metallic smell of blood and ash. I took out the small jade token I had found among the belongings of the last fallen man. Its edges were worn, but the engraved symbols still glowed faintly, almost as if they responded to the touch of my skin. I didn't recognize the engravings or their purpose, but the faint pulse of energy they emitted made me handle it with care.
There was no time to stop. The battle, though brief, had disturbed the tranquility of the forest. Even if no one had seen the flames I used to incinerate the corpses, the void left by their auras would not go unnoticed for long. The predators in this world were always lurking, and my current condition did not allow me to face an even greater threat yet.
With the night as my ally, I resumed my journey towards the temple that the fragmented memories of the body promised. It was a risk to trust in incomplete memories, but in a world full of uncertainty, any clue was better than nothing.
The journey was more arduous than expected. The forest seemed to change with each step, the trees twisted into strange shapes, and the ground, covered in roots and sharp rocks, tried to slow my progress. Even with the Spectral Core stabilizing my energy, fatigue began to set in. However, I finally saw it.
The temple.
The structure emerged from the shadows like a sleeping giant. Its walls were covered in moss and cracks, but they still conveyed an imposing presence. Large fallen pillars lay scattered around the entrance, and the air here was denser, saturated with demonic energy. The oppression was almost suffocating, but also intoxicating.
My steps led me to a worn arch, the main entrance of the temple. The symbols carved on it were similar to those on the jade token, though more detailed. As I approached, the token began to vibrate slightly inside my pocket, as if responding to the latent energy of this place.
"Interesting..." I murmured, pulling it out and holding it in front of the arch. A faint glimmer connected the engravings on the tile with those on the bow, and a shiver ran down my spine.
The corridor inside the temple was narrow, barely illuminated by a faint bluish light that emanated from energy veins embedded in the walls. Each step resonated like thunder in the oppressive silence. My instinct warned me that something, or someone, was watching this place.
After about twenty meters, the corridor opened into a large room. A huge statue of a hooded figure dominated the space, its stone eyes seemed to follow me as I moved forward. In front of the statue, a pedestal held an object shrouded in darkness. My heart raced.
"This must be the reason I came..."
I approached the pedestal, carefully assessing the surroundings. Traps, for sure. My senses detected subtle fluctuations in the energy around me, marking the locations of at least three security seals. Any false move would trigger the temple's defenses.
Focusing, I channeled the qi into my hands, extending it into fine threads that penetrated the mechanisms of the seals. I felt the initial resistance of the traps, but with patience and precision, I deactivated them one by one.
Finally, I reached out my hand towards the object on the pedestal. It was a small black crystal, polished and perfect like a drop of liquid obsidian. Upon touching it, a wave of energy roared inside me, as if the crystal were trying to merge with the Spectral Core.
"Not so fast..." I whispered, channeling my qi to stabilize the interaction. The crystal had its own will, a vestige of the force that had created it. Accepting it without resistance would be suicidal, but I couldn't ignore its potential either.
Before I could analyze further, a sound echoed from deep within the temple. I turned my head towards the entrance of the hall just as the temperature dropped drastically. A dense fog began to seep from the walls, and in the midst of it, a creature emerged that seemed made of pure darkness, with eyes that glowed like embers.
A Guardian.
With the crystal in hand, I prepared to fight. This temple wasn't going to give up its secrets so easily, but I also wasn't planning to leave empty-handed.
The Guardian moved with an unnatural fluidity, as if it were part of the mist itself. Its form, dark and unstable, seemed to change with each step, but its red eyes remained fixed on me, filled with ancient hatred. The aura it radiated was suffocating, a tangible weight that tried to crush my will.
I held the crystal tightly, feeling how its energy resonated with that of the Spectral Core within me. The connection was undeniable, but still unstable. If he wanted to use it in battle, he would have to master it quickly.
The Guardian launched the first attack, extending an arm that stretched like a living shadow. I jumped to the side, barely dodging the blow that left a deep crack in the ground where I had been. His strength was overwhelming, but his speed was somewhat manageable.
"Let's try this..." I murmured, channeling a part of the Core's qi into the crystal. A wave of dark energy coursed through my body, enhancing my perception and sharpening my reflexes. However, I felt a tug on my vitality, as if the crystal were taking more than it was giving.
The Guardian didn't give me time to adapt. This time, he attacked with both limbs, launching quick strikes that left traces of darkness in the air. I blocked one with a qi barrier, but the impact made me stagger back several steps. I seized the moment to channel more energy into my legs and launched myself forward, closing the distance between us.
With a quick twist, I unleashed a qi-powered punch straight to his torso. The impact resonated like thunder, and the Guardian momentarily destabilized, its form flickering as if it were a flame about to extinguish. However, it recovered almost immediately, and this time, its attack was fiercer.
The room began to change. The mist surrounding him condensed, forming spikes of darkness that floated in the air before launching towards me. I jumped, rolled, and dodged as best I could, but one of the thorns managed to graze me, leaving a deep cut on my arm. The wound didn't bleed; instead, an icy cold spread through my limb, numbing it.
"This isn't working..." I thought, adjusting my focus. The Guardian was stronger than I expected, and its attacks were too varied to simply dodge them all. I needed another strategy, something that could change the tide of the battle in my favor.
I looked at the crystal in my hand and made a decision. If I wanted to survive, I would have to take the risk. I closed my eyes for a moment, channeling as much qi as I could into the crystal. Its energy responded immediately, flowing through me with overwhelming intensity. It was like holding an erupting volcano, but instead of resisting, I let it flood me.
When I opened my eyes, the world around me had changed. My vision was clearer, and I could see the flows of energy in the air. The Guardian, once an amorphous mass, was now a defined figure, its core glowing faintly in the center of its chest.
"There you are..."
With a burst of speed, I lunged at the Guardian, dodging its attacks with precise movements. Every time he tried to hit me, he was no longer fast enough. I spun around him, launching quick attacks that destabilized his form. Finally, I gathered all the remaining energy in the crystal and in the Spectral Core, merging it into a single devastating technique.
"Disappear!" I shouted, unleashing a concentrated burst of dark energy directly into its core.
The impact was devastating. The Guardian let out a final roar, its body crumbling into fragments of darkness that faded into the mist. When the air cleared, the only thing left was a small crystalline fragment on the ground, pulsing faintly.
I knelt, panting from the effort. The energy from the crystal I had used had drained me almost completely, but I could still feel its power resonating within me. I extended my hand and picked up the fragment left by the Guardian. Like the black crystal, this one also had a purpose.
With both artifacts in my possession, I stood up and turned towards the exit of the room. The temple was not done with me yet, but now I knew something for certain: everything in this place was designed to test me. And so far, I had overcome every challenge.
With cautious steps, I continued delving into the dark corridors, ever closer to the heart of the temple and the secrets it promised.
The temple corridors were becoming increasingly oppressive. The pulsating light on the walls was now more intense, marking each step with an ominous heartbeat that resonated in the heavy air. As I advanced, I could feel how the energy of the place was accumulating, converging into a single point. This was the core of the temple, its heart, and the place where surely the greatest of its secrets lay.
The path narrowed into a corridor carved from black stone, its walls etched with runes that glowed faintly. The air here was different, laden with such intense pressure that each breath felt like a challenge. However, I didn't stop. I could no longer afford it.
Finally, the corridor opened into a vast hall, much larger than any I had ever crossed. The ceiling was so high that it disappeared into the gloom, and the floor was a mosaic of symbols that seemed to move under the spectral light illuminating the place. In the center, elevated on a stone altar, rested a dark crystal orb, suspended in the air by currents of energy. This was the core of the temple.
I approached slowly, each step resonating with an echo that seemed to multiply in the vastness of the hall. As I approached the altar, I felt a change in the atmosphere. The energy stirred, as if responding to my presence. But before I could analyze it, a deep roar shook the space, making the ground tremble beneath my feet.
From the shadows, a figure began to materialize. He was a colossus, an amalgamation of stone, metal, and pure darkness. His eyes burned with a crimson fire, and in his hands, he wielded a colossal weapon, a hammer that seemed capable of crushing mountains. This was not an ordinary Guardian. He was the final protector of the core, a titan designed to eliminate any threat.
I took a defensive stance, the Spectral Core shining within me as I prepared for the confrontation. This would be the ultimate challenge. If he wanted to claim the power of the orb, he would have to defeat it.
The titan didn't waste any time. His hammer rose, and an instant later, he brought it down with devastating force. I rolled to the side just in time to avoid the impact, but the blow created a shockwave that threw me several meters back. I quickly regained my balance, channeling energy to stabilize my position.
"This is not going to be easy..." I murmured, evaluating his movements.
The colossus was slow, but its reach and strength were overwhelming. Each step he took made the ground tremble, and each swing of his weapon left deep cracks in the earth. I couldn't face him head-on. I would have to rely on my speed and precision.
I leaped forward, launching a burst of dark qi towards his torso. The attack hit, but barely left a mark on its armored body. The titan reacted immediately, spinning with surprising speed for something of its size and sweeping with its hammer. I barely managed to dodge it, feeling the cutting wind of the blow pass dangerously close.
As I dodged, my eyes caught an important detail: in the center of its chest, right where the metal and stone plates converged, there was an opening that glowed with a faint light. That was its core, its weak point.
Determined, I channeled all the energy of the black crystal and the Spectral Core, merging them into a single attack. My body burned with the effort, but I couldn't afford to hold back. I ran towards the titan, dodging its attacks with precise movements while charging my energy.
When I was close enough, I jumped, aiming directly at its core. The titan tried to block me, raising his hammer to intercept me, but at the last second, I used the crystal's energy to propel myself even higher, dodging his defense.
"Now!" I shouted, unleashing all the accumulated energy in a single attack.
The explosion was blinding. A shockwave swept through the room, and the titan let out a roar of agony as its core shattered into a thousand fragments. His body collapsed, crumbling into a pile of debris that sank into the ground.
I fell to my feet, gasping for breath. My legs were trembling, and I felt like I barely had any energy left, but I had done it. The colossus was destroyed, and the path to the orb was clear.
I approached the altar, extending a hand towards the orb. Its energy was overwhelming, a constant current that threatened to devour me if I wasn't careful. But I had no intention of backing down. This power would be mine, and with it, I would take one more step towards the top of this ruthless world.
Upon touching the orb, a wave of energy coursed through my body, and my vision filled with fragmented images. They were ancient memories, echoes of the sect that had created this place and the power they once wielded. I could feel how the Spectral Core resonated with the orb, absorbing part of its power and strengthening my own qi.
But with the power, warnings also came. This was no ordinary artifact. It was a convergence core, a catalyst designed to amplify qi beyond human limits, but at a cost. An ancient voice whispered in my mind:
"Consume, or be consumed."
I gritted my teeth, determined. I had already crossed too many lines to stop now. If this power allowed me to survive and overcome my enemies, I was willing to accept the consequences.
When the light of the orb faded, I felt it: a new power throbbed within me, wild and dangerous, but completely mine.
I turned towards the exit, leaving behind the altar and the remains of the colossus. This temple had only been the beginning. Outside, the world remained a hostile place, full of enemies who would not hesitate to kill me for what I now possessed.
But now, they were the ones who should fear me.
With steady steps, I left the room, ready to face whatever came next.
