The Demon Queen's Contract

Chapter 145: Six creatures

The light flickered ahead, wavering like a dying star, but it was all I had to chase. Behind me, the cacophony of battle swirled into a storm of clashing steel, gnashing teeth, and desperate cries. The horde of creatures had multiplied fur, claws, and shadows, all bearing down on us.

The ground trembled with each monstrous footfall, and I could feel the weight of their overwhelming presence, like a thousand thundering hearts pulsing through the earth.

"To the light!" I shouted again, my voice raw, barely audible above the chaos. But the sound of my own command was drowned in the roar of the fight, my words scattering like leaves in a gale.

Seraphina had been flung back, her form crumpled on the ground, motionless for just a heartbeat too long. Fear clawed at my insides, but there was no time for hesitation.

I surged forward, my legs burning with the effort of pushing past the biting cold of dread. Each step felt heavy, the shadows around us seemed to thicken, slowing me down, trying to swallow me whole.

I wasn't fast enough.

The alpha beast, the towering figure with those gleaming eyes like burning embers, stood in my path.

It snarled, its breath coming out in visible puffs of smoke in the cold night air. The ground trembled under its weight as it advanced, stalking forward with deadly precision.

"Not today," I growled, clutching my sword tighter.

It lunged.

Everything blurred in that instant. Instinct took over. I ducked beneath its massive paw, feeling the rush of wind as its claws sliced through the space where my head had been. My heart hammered in my chest, adrenaline fueling my every movement.

My sword arced upward, slashing through the air, aiming for the soft underbelly of the beast. It howled as the blade bit into flesh, a sound that echoed like a thunderclap in the night.

But the wound barely slowed it down. It was a creature of the shadows, born of the darkness that pressed in from every direction.

Blood, thick and black, oozed from its side, but its eyes burned with renewed fury. Another swipe, and this time I wasn't quick enough. The beast's claws raked across my arm, sending a flash of pain through me.

I gritted my teeth, refusing to fall. I stumbled but managed to keep my footing. There was no time to assess the wound. If I fell now, there would be no getting back up.

"Push forward!" I screamed, though I wasn't sure if the words were meant for the others or for myself.

Another monstrous figure surged from the shadows, this one smaller but no less deadly. Its snarls harmonized with the alpha's, a haunting duet of terror. I caught a glimpse of Serge, bloodied but still swinging his spear with brutal precision, as the two beasts closed in on us.

A growl rumbled from deep within the smaller creature's throat, its jaws snapping dangerously close to Serge's side. I threw myself between them, blocking the creature's advance with the flat of my blade.

The impact jarred my arms, nearly knocking the sword from my grip. I could feel the beast's hot breath on my face as it pushed against me, its teeth gnashing, inches from my throat.

But there was no giving up now. I shoved with all my strength, knocking the beast back just long enough to thrust my sword deep into its chest. It let out a strangled roar, its body convulsing as it crumpled to the ground.

Serge gave me a grim nod, but there was no time for words. The shadows around us shifted, and a new wave of creatures began to emerge.

One after another, their glowing eyes pierced through the darkness. I counted them, my heart sinking with each pair of eyes that appeared.

Six.

Six monstrous figures, their forms hulking and distorted, as though the shadows themselves had come to life to destroy us.

"Hold the line!" I shouted again, my voice hoarse, my body trembling with exhaustion.

But the creatures kept coming, relentless, as if they knew our every move before we made it.

The light the flickering beacon we had chased was now barely a sliver, almost extinguished by the overwhelming darkness that surrounded us.

Every instinct screamed for me to flee, to retreat back into the castle's walls where it was safe, but that wasn't an option. Not now.

We had to end this.

Seraphina stirred on the ground, and I felt a surge of relief wash over me as she rose to her feet, blood trickling down her temple but her eyes burning with that same fierce determination that had seen us through countless battles before.

"Seraphina," I called, but she was already moving, her sword flashing as she stepped into the path of the advancing creatures.

"We take them together," she said, her voice steady despite the chaos swirling around us.

Together.

I nodded, and with a battle cry that rose from deep within my chest, we charged toward the line of creatures.

The first one leaped at us, a monstrous thing with leathery wings and jagged teeth. Seraphina met it head-on, her sword slicing through its wing with a sickening crunch.

It shrieked in fury, but she didn't give it a chance to recover. With a swift motion, she drove her blade deep into its throat, and it collapsed in a heap of limbs and wings.

Two more rushed at me from either side, their eyes glowing with malevolent hunger. I pivoted, blocking the first with my sword and driving my elbow into the second, knocking it off balance.

A quick slash to the first one's neck sent it crashing to the ground, but the second recovered too quickly. Its claws raked across my chest, tearing through my armor.

I gasped in pain but didn't stop. I couldn't stop.

Seraphina was beside me again, her movements fluid and precise, like a deadly dance as she parried the attacks of another beast. Blood soaked the ground at our feet, the stench of iron heavy in the air.

Another creature lunged at me this one larger, faster. I barely had time to raise my sword before it was on top of me, pinning me to the ground.

Its jaws snapped inches from my face, its breath rancid, its eyes glowing with cruel intelligence.

I struggled beneath its weight, my arms trembling with the effort of holding my sword between us. But the creature was too strong. I could feel the pressure building, the weight of its body crushing me.

"Get off!" I shouted, twisting my body to the side just enough to throw the beast off balance. With a desperate surge of strength, I shoved it off and scrambled to my feet, driving my sword into its side as it tried to rise.

It let out a final, guttural snarl before collapsing, motionless.

Breathing heavily, I turned to face the remaining creatures. Three of them circled us now, their movements slow, deliberate, as if they were toying with us, savoring the hunt.

Seraphina wiped the blood from her brow, her eyes locking with mine. There was no fear in her gaze, only a fierce determination that mirrored my own.

"We finish this," I said, gripping my sword tighter.

She nodded.

The first of the remaining creatures lunged at me, its claws outstretched, its jaws wide. I sidestepped, my sword slicing through the air, catching it in the side.

It howled in pain but didn't stop. With a burst of speed, it came at me again, but this time I was ready. I drove my sword through its chest, the blade sinking deep into flesh and bone.

It shuddered, then went still.

Seraphina was already battling the second creature, her strikes quick and deadly. She moved like a force of nature, each blow precise, each movement calculated. Within moments, the beast lay dead at her feet.

Only one remained.

The largest of them all.

It stood at the edge of the battlefield, watching us with cold, calculating eyes. Its massive form was wreathed in shadows, as if the darkness itself clung to its skin.

Seraphina and I stood side by side, our breaths coming in ragged gasps, our bodies bruised and bloodied, but our resolve unbroken.

The creature let out a low growl, a sound that reverberated through the ground beneath our feet.

And then, with terrifying speed, it charged.

We braced ourselves, our swords raised, ready to meet the oncoming storm.

But even as the beast bore down on us, there was a sense of inevitability, a feeling that this fight, this war, was only the beginning.

As the creature closed in, I tightened my grip on my sword, my heart pounding in my chest.

And then, with one final roar, the monster leapt into the air, its massive body hurtling toward us.

Six creatures. One final battle.

And as the shadows closed in, I knew that whatever came next, we would face it together.
