Chapter 35: Volume 1 Chapter 35: Travelers in the Desert
Sargon is located in the southwest of the Terra continent. It borders Minos to the northeast, is close to Iberia to the southeast, and is adjacent to the increasingly prosperous countries of Columbia and the borderlands of Bolivar to the north. To the south, it borders the forbidden land known as the Foehn Hotland.
Garde's hometown, Acahualla, is located in the southeast of Sargon, close to Iberia and the sea.
In fact, after leaving the rainforest and heading west, you could soon see the intimidating desert.
However, after spending a month in the rainforest, Rhine Lab's supplies had already been partially depleted. They had to go to the nearest supply point, which was also the agreed-upon resupply point.
Lying in the compartment, Garde drew the route map for their current mission in his notebook. It formed a downward V-shaped route from the rainforest to the Ibut region and then into the Foehn Hotland.
Garde began to think about the route he would take after entering the hot land. After all, he was going in to gain experience, not to die.
Although Garde only received an "ordinary" rating in the tactical planning category, it only meant he wasn't good at commanding battles, not that he was unintelligent.
As an ordinary crocodile man, Garde considered not being labeled with a "deficiency" in tactical planning as a success.
"Garde, sir!"
A Rhine Lab staff member's voice came from outside the compartment.
"We're about to make lunch. Do you have any preferences?"
"I don't really—Oh, wait."
Garde subconsciously replied, suddenly remembering.
"If possible, could you add some chili for me?"
"Chili?"
"Don't you have any?"
"Yes, we do. We'll prepare it right away!"
If Garde were just an ordinary Sargon rainforest native, the Rhine Lab staff wouldn't have been so polite to him.
But Garde had earned Saria's respect with his strength, and gaining her respect meant gaining the respect of all the Defense Department security personnel.
After all, even among Rhine Lab staff, not everyone could communicate with Saria on equal terms!
"Garde, do you have a moment?"
After the staff member finished speaking, Saria's voice followed.
Garde opened the window and saw Saria standing outside.
The staff member who had just bowed repeatedly to her hurriedly ran off after they made eye contact.
Garde chuckled. "Saria, your subordinates really respect you."
"Is that so?"
Saria frowned.
"I actually feel that their flustered behavior doesn't look good."
"Sometimes, whether towards others or towards ourselves, we shouldn't be too harsh."
Closing his notebook, Garde stepped out of the compartment and noticed Saria's attire.
He sighed helplessly.
For safety reasons, Saria never took off her protective suit, even when sleeping.
Now, due to the scorching sun hanging high in the sky, sweat began to bead on her forehead.
However, she didn't utter a word of complaint.
The convoy had found a relatively shady spot to camp because two of the vehicles had blown their tires due to the high temperatures of the desert. They needed to make temporary repairs.
After leaving the rainforest, all they could see was the vast desert. The yellow sea of sand stretched from underfoot all the way to the edge of the sky.
To reach the Ibut region, they had to travel over two hundred kilometers along this desert.
Without vehicles, even the physical fitness of Terra's people posed a risk of getting lost in the desert.
"If everything goes smoothly, we should arrive at an underground black market in the Ibut region in the afternoon. We'll take a short break there before meeting the local Lord Ameer."
"Will we pass through a town called Redhorn on the way?"
"No, that town is not on our route. Is the underground black market leader you mentioned in charge of that town?"
"Sort of."
Walking side by side on the sandy ground, Garde and Saria conversed.
Saria couldn't help but glance sideways at Garde.
Despite the outside temperature reaching over forty degrees, Garde's body still felt as cool as if he had just stepped out of an air-conditioned compartment.
Saria wanted to get a little closer, but she resisted the urge.
Her education since childhood had taught her not to rely on others.
She could endure this level of temperature!
"Ah, Mr. Garde, here you are. Lunch is ready."
A young girl ran over. She was one of the few female security officers in Rhine Lab.
Upon seeing Garde, she warmly greeted him.
"Wow, Mr. Garde, it's so cool around you!"
The tall crocodile man's body conveniently blocked Saria from view on the other side.
When the girl took Garde's arm and showed an expression of enjoyment as if stepping into an air-conditioned room on a scorching day, she only then noticed Saria standing next to Garde.
"D-Director Saria, what are you doing here!?"
"I was just discussing matters with Mr. Garde."
The girl reluctantly let go of Garde's arm, realizing that Saria, as their superior, was scarier than Garde, who acted as a humanoid air conditioner.
"Saria, you scared her."
"I was just being honest."
Besides, it was improper for a woman to get so close to an unfamiliar man.
To avoid wavering, Saria took the initiative to walk towards the low walls constructed by two Originium Arts practitioners using sand.
Although it couldn't completely block the sun, it was much cooler than standing directly under the scorching sun.
Garde scratched his head and followed suit.
Coincidentally, he was feeling hungry too.
At that moment, a voice came from afar.
"Hey, big guy over there!"
Carrying a simple travel bag, a Caprinae girl with a sword at her waist and a pair of curved horns on her head walked towards them from a distance, catching Garde's attention.
"Are you guys heading to the nearby city? Can you give me a ride?"
"Don't worry, I'll pay."
