Chapter 8: 8) The First Mission Experience
So Yuta and I are on a mission.
My first and, well, I don't know how many he's been on since coming here. But all I know is that a couple of grade 2 cursed spirits and a grade 1 cursed spirit is running amock near a pachinko parlor.
(A/N: Pachinko is quite literally a gambling game in Japan.)
How excruciating…
Since negative energy build up significantly where humans experience great suffering, I can imagine this might be a pain in the ass. After this mission though, I should get my rank evaluation and finally be registered as something other than a measly grade 4.
Anyways, we arrived to the scene, where police tape and officers stood outside of the building. Ichiji gave us a brief description of the situation, casted a veil, and offered some kind words of encouragement. Yuta is still more experienced than me, so hopefully we aren't in any eminent danger. I heard from Maki and Panda that he showed incredible power during the Hyakki Yakō and even before then, so I was a bit pumped to see him in real action!
"Ever played pachinko?" I asked Yuta while we walked through the police tape.
"What? Me? You think I'd ever gamble like that?"
"Absolutely not. But it never hurts to ask I guess."
We both stepped through the door simultaneously and instantly caught wind of the vibe that filled the air.
Definitely a cursed spirit.
I couldn't feel it during Hyakki Yakō, probably because of my lack of CE control, but now I can feel them accurately.
Yuta pulled out the sword in his bag and started walking slowly down the aisle. I followed him cautiously with my oar in hand.
"Boo!"
Yuta turned around at me, obviously startled as if I did something, which left me a bit confused myself.
"Yo you good?" I asked him.
"You're not funny." He said as he kept walking silently.
But… I didn't do anything…
Then I remembered what Maki told me during a sparring session.
'Some cursed spirits can resort to trickery to lure in prey or separate a group.'
There was old blood splattered all over the inside of the building, so it's likely more than a couple people were killed by these spirits.
"BOO!" another distorted voice echoed through the hallway.
"See! I told you it wasn't me! You should apologize for calling me unfu-"
Yuta pushed me into one of the gaps of the pachinko machines as a giant black creature with an insanely large mouth swallowed everything down the row, including Yuta.
That's not good..
I hear a faint "pssst." and feel a slight tug on my ankle. Suddenly, I was snatched down the hall by a small but powerful shadow. While I was relentlessly dragged through the aisle, my body smacked against the powerless pachinko machines which was pretty irritating.
Then I remembered, just output CE!
When I did, the spirit shrieked and let go immediately, squirming into the darkness like a little fucking rat..
I got up on my feet and got in a battle stance. I don't want to output too much CE or I might blow up the the entire building with Yuta inside, so that's out the question. Bait might probably be my best option in this moment.
"Psst.."
I let my CE drop close to zero in the case that the spirit would only attack me ONLY if I was off guard. Obviously I was correct by the way it jumped out at me with its abnormally large black hands and sharp teeth. I ducked my head and got ready for the next attack.
About 10 seconds passed and the silence inevitably gave away the location of the spirit, leaving me extremely prepared. And so, the abomination prowled at me again, but this time, I was able to see it easily.
"Gotcha!!" I yelled as I grabbed it with my bare hand. It held on my arm tightly while attempting to squirm away.
NO MORE ANNOYING SPIRITS!!!
I cranked up my CE output and corroded it to nothing but ashes only in a few seconds.
"So my corrosive potency has increased along with my control. Sweet!"
Now on to Yuta.
A pachinko parlor isn't this big inside right? Well I should start searching anyways..
Then a devastating boom followed by loud groans shook the entire building and I instantly knew it had to be cousin fighting. I'm on my way Yuta!
