Chapter 213 - 0201: Powerful Opponent
Chapter 213: Chapter 0201: Powerful Opponent
The training is proceeding in an orderly fashion.
However, many things cannot be improved in a short period of time. Do the best and hope not to fall too far behind.
The orthopedics department is barely accepting any patients now, as the training team members are all working full-time on the training.
Due to different duties such as rounds and surgeries, other doctors will have different free times, so in addition to the regular training every evening, the training team also needs to provide irregular daytime training for colleagues who are available.
Director Han has been looking worried. Facing powerful opponents, even if he leads the elite of Mo Sixth, it is uncertain if they could win against Tokyo University Hospital, not to mention the vulnerable Sanbo.
Director Tan is somewhat regretful now. It was he who stirred up trouble. He initially wanted to show off the strength of Sanbo’s Orthopedics at the Academic Conference. But he didn’t expect Fujiwara Masao to participate. Now, both Director Han and the entire department are stuck in a predicament. It’s difficult to quit halfway.
If it was just a comparison of individual doctors’ skills, Director Tan, with his competitive spirit, would never regret it, regardless of the outcome, he would have given it his all.
However, now, it is a competition of a team’s strength, including the professionalism of doctors, team collaboration, medical equipment, system process, medical concepts, etc.
In the afternoon, when no one came for training, Director Han called Yang Ping and members of the training team into his office. Director Tan was also there, looking a bit haggard.
Director Han turned his computer screen around to face everyone and played another video for them to watch. It was a surgery performed by Takahashi Fumiya.
“This was sent by one of Director Tan’s friends from Tokyo. It’s a recent recording of a surgery they performed. The previous videos you’ve seen are already several years old. The one with Fujiwara Masao is over 20 years old.”
Director Han’s finger hovered over the desk as if he wanted to tap on it, but he didn’t. He said, “Everyone, take a close look and learn from it. This time, we are here to learn. In the future, five years later, ten years later, or twenty years later, we hope to surpass them.”
In other words, they stand no chance this time!
This was not to boost others’ morale and wipe out their own ambition, but the stark truth. Screaming slogans is useless when dealing with scientific matters. Everything must be dealt with seriously.
Takahashi Fumiya, one of the outstanding students of Fujiwara Masao.
In the video, he was in surgery, his hands, whether operating alone or with an assistant, were like a magician’s: steady, accurate, light, and swift. His familiarity with anatomy was as if he was a master butcher disassembling a cow. Instruments stuck in his hand, not slipping no matter how he manipulated them.
Watching the screen, Yang Ping noticed that Director Han had switched the video to slow motion. In this surgery, Takahashi only had one assistant who was mainly responsible for exposing structures, so essentially, Takahashi was performing the surgery alone.
Suturing! Single-handed suturing, including continuous suturing with a final knot; interrupted suturing where each stitch is tied; and double-handed suturing with two threads. Different tissues required different suture techniques. In one surgery, he had demonstrated at least three advanced suturing skills.
Last night, deep into the night, Yang Ping and Song Zimo were discussing suturing techniques. Now, the three suturing techniques exhibited by Takahashi were all more advanced than the ones they were discussing.
Looking at each other, Song Zimo and Yang Ping, both were speechless. After much research, they had only come up with one method. Yet now, Takahashi had demonstrated three, all of which were clearly simpler and more effective than the one they had created.
The dazzling needlework, the surgical area blurred by blood and flesh, almost impossible to discern from the hand movements while suturing, yet suturing can be done this way?
Suturing is just one aspect of the surgery, and it had already revealed the gap in abilities, let’s continue watching.
Surrounding the operating table were several devices similar to transmitters and receivers, seemingly capturing information from different angles.
“This is the latest infrared surveillance equipment, a generation ahead of the latest products on the market. It was developed in collaboration with Toshiba Corporation and Tokyo University Hospital and is still in the experimental phase. There are no products like this on the market yet,” Director Han explained.
A high-definition screen hung in front of Takahashi, similar to the screens that Yang Ping uses during arthroscopy. On this screen, a three-dimensional digital human figure could be rotated to any angle.
The direction of the blood vessels was vividly represented on the screen image. The damaged areas were also clearly visible, including the location of bleeding, the speed of bleeding, and the amount of blood already lost.
Moreover, Takahashi’s surgical instruments were also displayed on the screen. This allowed him to find and prioritize the treatment of blood vessels without even looking at the patient; he was able to stop the hemorrhage simply by observing the image on the screen.
“This infrared surveillance equipment is practically the magic wand for trauma and emergency rescue. They have mastered various infrared imaging agents. Look at the screen image showing vascular visualization, they employed a unique imaging agent that adheres to hemoglobin. After injecting the patient with this agent, the flow of blood can be clearly displayed on the infrared surveillance screen. The resulting image is real-time, dynamic, and functional. It reveals not only anatomical features, but also reflects function. They can monitor blood flow velocity, loss of blood, levels of ischemia and hypoxia in the patient’s organs. There is a computational model, that utilizes the observed data to calculate and determine the time that the human body can sustain its life. The model assists the doctors in the rescue operation,” noted Director Han.
Takahashi was very familiar with this equipment, and almost seemed to merge with it. Under the surveillance of this device, he was able to handle a blood vessel within seconds.
In trauma surgery, if the issues related to bleeding can be handled, it’s almost possible to rescue half the patients. The remaining half die due to damage to vital organs such as lungs, hearts, and brains.
From the video, this patient had multiple hemorrhages all over the body, one of them was a broken subclavian artery . The artery retracted, and under surveillance, Takahashi inserted the forceps directly into the wound, clamped the blood vessel, and stopped the hemorrhage.
Like this, dealing with a bleeding spot within a few seconds, firstly controlling the hemorrhage, then handling the vessels – those to be anastomosed were anastomosed, and those to be ligated were ligated. With a clear strategy and rhythm, a second seemingly hopeless trauma case became simple in his hands.
It seemed that the rival was more formidable than imagined. The gap seemed impossible to close, with a high caliber doctor combined with advanced equipment.
“Everyone shouldn’t feel too much pressure. We must do what we must do. Undoubtedly, there will be a gap in this live broadcast. It is impossible to catch up in a short time. They are of world-class level. We must have the right attitude, hold a learning mindset, and showcase our own strength,” said Director Han.
None disagreed with Director Han’s viewpoint – a resigned sentiment. Like when viewing a house worth millions, but you only have tens of thousands in hand, you can only say, “Strive for it, buy it in the future!”
Beyond this, there was no other way. Could one proclaim, “I can definitely buy it!” and hope the property dealer has a sudden change of heart to sell it to you for a mere ten thousand?
The reality was, well-trained doctors, advanced equipment, and pioneering ideology cannot be surpassed just by organizing training sessions. But training was essential, even when faced with a tough gap in quality, maintaining dignity was of utmost importance.
Takahashi found a significant bleeding point within seconds. Yang Ping wouldn’t even dare to claim he could do it that fast. After all, there was a certain discrepancy between radiographic imaging and reality. Radiographic imaging is static, while the patient’s injury is dynamic.
Yang Ping could create a mental image based on diagnostic imaging to guide him during surgery, but there were still deviations and it wasn’t possible to conduct real-time monitoring like they were.
The infrared navigation of Sanbo is complicated in terms of operation, and it cannot clearly image the blood vessels, let alone produce a three-dimensional digital human figure like theirs. The image detailed every injury in the body, showing clearly both anatomy and function.
Surgeons like Takahashi, who performed surgery under infrared surveillance, had a smooth collaboration between their hands, brain, and equipment. This level of control was comparable to Yang Ping performing arthroscopy, it was simply a matter of following his intuition.
Takahashi located the subclavian artery by simply looking at the screen, then extended a large curved clamp, clamped the broken blood vessel ends, pulled them out, and performed vascular anastomosis in just one or two minutes.
After controlling the hemorrhages all over the body, they immediately began repairing the damaged tissues and organs. The surgery seemed both steady and meticulous, with the chest and abdomen handled using endoscopy.
Although thoracoscopy and laparoscopy are both types of endoscopy, there are significant differences between them. Without having done a few thousand surgeries, it would not be possible for Takahashi to be so proficient.
Yang Ping had not yet been exposed to thoracoscopy and laparoscopy, a fact Director Han was well aware of.
In addition to Takahashi Fumiya, there was also a Sasaki Jiro who, reportedly, is even more gifted than Takahashi.
