Surge of Mayhem

Chapter 2: Surge

An endless abyss. That's all I knew for such a long time. A darkness that felt slimy, not oceanic in any sense, but one that held me trapped. I couldn't move, barely even think.

So when the abyss revealed a green light, I did my best to struggle toward it. I thought that if I saw any light, it would be white, but I couldn't think of anything else other than escape.

I still didn't feel like I moved, rather, it looked like the light was engulfing the abyss instead. Maybe I had a rescuer. The light engulfed all in my vision, and then me.

The sudden weight I felt made me gasp, the sudden intake startled me even further as not nearly as much air came with it than should have, throwing me into a coughing fit as my eyes darted around.

I was still floating, only now I was in a liquid of sorts, not water, as it was oddly green, though maybe that was just the colour of the lights. Reaching forward had my hand connect with clear glass. Rather than being unable to move in an abyss, now I was trapped like some exhibit.

Still coughing, I ripped off the thing stuck on my face. This proved to be a slight mistake, as it was what was providing me what little air intake that I had. I choked a little and looked around to find an escape, but I was completely enclosed in a tube of glass.

Finally taking time to see further, my vision was blurred so I could hardly see outside the tube. Though I noticed a blue figure stood outside the glass.

I didn't have much air left with me, since I had coughed out most of it, so, desperately, I swung at the glass. Despite the liquid I was encased in, it did little to cushion my blow against the glass. The instant my fist connected, the glass shattered, and I was swept out of the tube in rush as the liquid made to escape, breaking more of the glass in the process.

I coughed out what little liquid had entered my lungs. My vision was less blurred now without the weirdly thick liquid and glass between me and the outside.

I immediately glanced the at the figure I saw before, seeing a slightly shocked... chipmunk lady? It was hard to tell precisely what animal due to how humanoid she was, but she had bright red hair, a blue jacket and black tights with blue boots. Her... fur was brown. And wasn't that strange? Red hair, AND brown fur? The only things that pointed to her being a chipmunk were her ears, muzzle, and short tail.

I shot up and backed away from the lady, a short crackle of electricity letting me know that some machines probably weren't doing good from the sudden influx of mystery liquid.

I look around, searching for an escape in case this chipmunk lady tried to catch me. I didn't know what was happening, but I do know that I don't want to stay here. All the lab equipment was freaking me out, and it was clear to me I was some lab rat or science experiment thing.

Almost immediately I spotted another pod, just like mine, only the kid inside was still unconscious, or I guess just sleeping or something, I don't know how these machines work.

He is a blue fox kid, kind of teal, which is weird in a fox in the first place, but, looking at myself I was green, which I am sure there isn't any animal that colour. I would have to find a mirror or something later, but I would have to save the kid and myself first.

He is also mostly naked, but he has gloves and shoes on. Does it matter since he has fur? Then why do I have clothes? Why does everyone have shoes and gloves? Even the chipmunk lady has those.

Questions for later. Or maybe never. Depends on how this all goes.

I broke open his tank in a flash too, the chipmunk lady hasn't even moved yet, which is good for me. I caught him as the liquid flowed out, and immediately after, an alarm went off. I am guessing busting both tanks was the cause.

"A-are you okay? Who are you? Why were you in there?" The chipmunk lady wondered.

So, she didn't belong to this lab at least. Still didn't know what she was doing here though. For all I know this was a medical ward in whatever wacky world this was. Obviously, it wasn't, but still.

Before I could give her the iconic answer of "I don't know," the alarm blared louder as the speaker in the facility echoed, "Self-Destruct Initiated."

"What kind of cartoony ass lab has a self destruct?" I growled.

"We gotta get outta here!" The chipmunk lady called out before running toward what I now guess is the proper exit to this room.

I followed along with her, though she was running weirdly slowly. It was kind of annoying considering this building was about to blow up.

She whipped a brick shaped calculator out of her jacket as soon as she started running.

"Nicole, how long do we got before the place blows up?" She asked desperately.

To my surprise, the calculator responded, [According to standard Egg Army regulation... 10 seconds, 9...] It continued counting down.

She seemed shocked at the answer and barely sped up after. Was that the fastest she could run?

So, in my infinite kindness, I yelled at her, "You're goddamn slow! Hold on!" I tossed her onto my back with strange ease. I guess I barely felt that glass, maybe these animals were just naturally super strong.

Well, I am one now too.

She hurriedly grasped onto me as I regrasped the fox kid in both of my arms. I heard another crackle of electricity as I shot forward. The chipmunk lady squeaked as I ran forward, much faster than she had.

I got halfway down the hallway before I had to hurriedly dodge a blue blur approaching me.

"Hey! Watch it!" I snarled as I continued running.

The blue blur caught up to me soon after, glancing over, I could make out an animal dude. Also only wearing gloves and shoes. I would ask about it, but it feels like a faux paus.

"Sup! Thanks for grabbing Sally for me. Name's Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog." The blue... hedgehog, I guess, introduced himself with a cool calm that I found a little irritating in such a tense situation.

I had a name for chipmunk girl now, though. Sonic has a bunny girl on his back, with cybernetic limbs. Prosthetics? Must be rough.

"Hey." I responded, lackluster.

He seemed a little awkward, "Uh, what's your name?" He prompted for me.

I stayed silent for a moment, and growled in irritation.

I ignored the question that I couldn't answer as a rumbling shook the lab facility we were in, and glancing back I could see a rapid cascade of explosions following us from down the hallway.

Thankfully, we were approaching the exit as a white light rapidly approached us. Which also made me realize that maybe I was running fast, and not Sally running slow.

Me and Sonic scattered to the sides as soon as we exited and watched as the explosive debris fired out the cave-like entrance to this undoubtedly secret laboratory.

I sighed in relief as I let Sally down, and laid the kid against the rock.

"Oho ho ho ho!" A laugh that echoed like a gravelly Santa.

Turning my head I saw a... human? I wanted to say human, but he had a tiny head and his body was this massive egg-shaped travesty. He was being held up by a half-sphere flying vehicle of sorts.

Next to the man was another animal guy, and the only guy wearing clothes, though without pants still. I think he was a duck or something based on the bill.

"Hello Hedgehog!" The egg man bellowed, malice and enthusiasm in his voice.

"Eggman!" Sonic crowed, and I knew this world sucked.
