Chapter 113: PR Nightmare
Jessica had stayed behind in LA, opting out of the tour, convinced she could accomplish more by overseeing everything from there. She had rationalized it by telling herself that Ethan needed her more in the office, away from the madness of the road. Of course, she conveniently ignored the fact that Ethan had told her not to come after her overbearing behavior at the LA show. Still, she couldn't deny that staying back had proven productive—she had managed to get a lot done.
For weeks, Jessica had been handling every minute detail of the tour, from organizing logistics to dealing with potential roadblocks. She held video meetings with stadium managers, lighting teams, and set designers, ensuring that every detail of the show was flawless. And what a ride it had been! Since the start of 2022, the tour had been the most talked-about event in the industry, and Ethan had been reaching new heights of fame. Every show was bigger than the last, each merchandise sold was another victory, and the press was constantly buzzing about his next move.
Jessica had also been fielding calls—calls that, by all rights, should have gone to Ethan's agent, but his agent was too busy chasing his grand ambitions. Not that Jessica minded too much. She knew what he was doing. also, she had a knack for handling this sort of thing. Her way of "helping out" mostly involved forwarding those calls to Bill, Ethan's manager, and letting him handle the rest.
Sitting in her sleek office, the hum of the city below, Jessica sipped her coffee, finishing up a call with the Brit Awards. Ethan had received an incredible eight nominations due to the success of his album, and she was informing the representatives that Ethan wouldn't be able to attend. The representatives, however, were insistent, even offering to charter a jet to get him there. They were desperate to have him there, no doubt, but Jessica wasn't buying it. Ethan was too busy. The awards could wait.
"Tell them we'll have to pass the tour can't be paused," she said smoothly into the phone, glancing at her computer screen.
As she finalized the details of the call, she couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction. The tour was running like clockwork, and Ethan's success was directly tied to her flawless management. While the artists were out there performing, she was the one behind the scenes ensuring that everything—down to the last light cue—was perfect. She could almost hear Ethan's voice in her head, telling her how much he appreciated her dedication.
But she wasn't done. As the Brit Awards call wrapped up, Jessica moved on to another task. On her screen, a graph was coming together. It highlighted how even some of Ethan's off days during the tour had been canceled or replaced with interviews and video shoots.
She smiled as she clicked through the numbers, noting that Ethan had never been busier. He was getting more exposure than ever before. The world was his stage, and she was the mastermind pulling the strings behind the curtain. When Ethan saw the graph, he would shout with surprise probably angry at having his days off reduced, but this were crucial times and he should blame himself it was he that said he wanted to be a global star.
Her phone rang, interrupting her thoughts. She glanced at the screen and smiled when she saw Ethan's name. He must be in Texas by now, gearing up for his next show. She picked up the call, expecting to hear his usual upbeat tone, but instead, there was a frantic edge to his voice.
"Hey, Ethan," she greeted, trying to sound as relaxed as possible.
"Jessica, listen, we were on our way to the stadium, and a car just came right up in front of us," Ethan's voice came through, strained and shaken.
Jessica's brow furrowed. "Oh my God, is everyone okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, we're fine. Well, Rebecca's in the hospital now. She was feeling dizzy."
Jessica gasped, her heart racing. "God, no!" she whispered.
"Yeah, but that's not the big issue," Ethan's voice wavered. "Rebecca will be okay, but it's the girl... she—"
Jessica's mind immediately went into overdrive. "What happened? Is she—"
Ethan cut her off, his voice rising in panic. "No, God no! Just let me talk," he interrupted, desperation bleeding into his words. "She's injured, bleeding from her head, but we managed to get her to the hospital on time. The doctors are with her now."
Jessica exhaled in relief, but her heart was still pounding in her chest. She had never heard Ethan sound this way before. It was as if the calm, collected superstar she knew had momentarily fallen apart.
"Yes, she's with the doctors, but—"
Before he could finish, Jessica's voice was sharp and to the point. "Who caused the accident?"
Ethan hesitated. "Pardon?"
"I said, who's at fault for the accident, Ethan?" she pressed. "We need to know how we can spin this."
There was a moment of silence on the line, and Jessica felt her pulse quicken. The longer he took to answer, the more she feared something wasn't right.
"Well, according to Jeff, she was the one who made a sharp turn at the intersection," Ethan replied after a beat.
Jessica let out a breath of relief, a small smile tugging at her lips. "That's great then," she said, but hearing the uncertainty in Ethan's voice, she quickly corrected herself. "Sorry, sorry. I don't mean 'that's great.' I just mean, since we're not responsible for the accident, we could pretty much salvage this."
Ethan's tone remained tense. "Eh... I don't think that's going to work."
"Sorry, what?" Jessica's voice faltered, a knot tightening in her stomach.
"The lady who had the accident... it was Taylor Swift."
Jessica froze, the words echoing in her mind. Taylor Swift? The Taylor Swift?
