Chapter 45: Chapter 45

"Ah!!!"

Alex clearly saw a black object fall from the sky and crash into an ambulance that had just passed by below. The woman inside screamed in panic, startled by the unexpected event.

Quinn, flustered, quickly got to his feet and looked around, not bothering with the woman who was screaming. As soon as the ambulance came to a stop, he swiftly opened the door and dashed into a nearby alley.

"That's more like it, now you look like a vampire!"

Watching Quinn flee in such a hurry, Alex finally nodded with satisfaction. Their exaggerated recovery abilities had at least given them a little bit of the legendary vampire vibe.

"Ahhhhhh!!!"

Just as Alex was about to chase after Quinn, another agonized scream echoed through the air. Looking up, he saw that the source of the scream was the black female doctor Quinn had bitten earlier. Right behind her, another dark figure burst out of a window, exaggeratedly following her as they both leapt onto a pile of discarded items across the street from the hospital.

It didn't take much to guess that the figure was none other than the flamboyant day-walker—Blade!

"Impressive jumping ability!"

Alex couldn't help but murmur, casually plucking a few fragments from a nearby wall and flicking them toward the window where Blade had just jumped through.

A few armed police officers had already appeared at the shattered window, aiming their guns at the airborne Blade and the freshly landed female doctor. They were about to open fire when Alex's projectile shards shot up from below, taking them all out in an instant.

Alex wasn't about to show mercy to these creatures of the Ha-Gui tribe (the "Ha Ghost Clan"). They were even more detestable than the Chinese traitors during the war of resistance—because they had betrayed all of humanity. These people, desperate to become vampires, were a far greater threat.

"Well then, good luck, Blade."

With that, Alex flashed a smile toward Blade's direction before quickly pursuing the path that Quinn had taken.

In just a short amount of time, Quinn had already managed to flee several hundred meters, and along the way, he was constantly looking at the humans around him, seemingly tempted by the urge to stop and drink their blood.

If Alex didn't catch up soon, there was a risk of unnecessary casualties!

"Heh! Heh! Heh! Heh!"

As Quinn ran frantically through the alley, he gasped for breath in fear of being caught by Blade. The roads he chose were dark, secluded alleys where no humans were to be seen. By now, he looked like someone nearly burnt to a crisp, and it was clear he was terrifying to anyone who saw him!

"?!"

Suddenly, Quinn's eyes lit up as he spotted a drunk, long-haired girl stumbling out of a side alley on his left.

"Got you!"

Quinn cheered in excitement and, like the wind, he rushed toward her.

The drunken girl, her vision blurred, was shocked to see an unappealing figure suddenly standing before her, hands gripping her shoulders tightly.

"Ah!!"

The moment the long-haired girl saw the figure, her drunken stupor vanished, and she screamed in her highest pitch of panic. She struggled with all her might, her mind filled with despair: "God, have you forsaken me, your faithful follower? First, I got dumped, and now I'm encountering such a monster!"

"Hahahaha!!"

Quinn, a vampire with extraordinary strength, easily overpowered her. There was no way this ordinary woman could break free. Laughing maniacally, Quinn's sharp canine teeth drew nearer and nearer to her delicate neck.

"Whoosh!"

Suddenly, the sound of wind cut through the air, and a soda can flew toward Quinn at high speed. With a loud bang, Quinn was sent flying backward from his bloodsucking victim.

"Damn it! Who?! Who's there?! Show yourself!"

Recovering quickly from the impact, Quinn leapt to his feet and roared angrily toward the direction the can had come from.

The long-haired girl glanced toward the source of the commotion. A blonde young man, wearing casual clothes and sunglasses despite it being late at night, slowly walked over with a luxurious sword case strapped to his back.

"Damn it, it's you again?!!"

Quinn roared, but there was an undeniable panic and fear in his voice. The young man who had appeared was none other than the one who had indirectly caused him to end up in such a miserable state—Alex.

"Not leaving yet?" Alex asked, completely ignoring Quinn. Instead, he turned to the stunned long-haired girl and asked, "Are you okay?"

"Ah?! Th-thank you!!"

The girl snapped out of her stupor and quickly thanked Alex, hurriedly running away from the scene.

"Why aren't you running? You afraid of dying?" Alex asked, surprised as he glanced at Quinn from a distance.

At this moment, Quinn was not rushing to escape. Instead, he was panting heavily, his eyes locked onto Alex with an expression that seemed to convey a desire to tear him apart, drink his blood.

"Are you going to let me go?"

"Instead of asking me if I'll let you go, why not ask yourself if you can escape? It seems you still have some brain in that head of yours!"

Alex let out a laugh. "Don't worry, I won't kill you just yet! I'll give you plenty of time to run. So, go ahead and escape—run as far as you can!!"

"You want me to lead you to more vampires, don't you?" Quinn spat bitterly.

"Correct. That's exactly my plan." Alex didn't hide his intentions, admitting without hesitation. "If you want to live, then run quickly. If I change my mind, you won't even have a sliver of hope left!"

"You'll regret this!" Quinn cursed angrily, then turned and ran without looking back.

Although Quinn wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, that didn't mean he lacked intelligence. Alex wanted to use him to lure out more vampires, but Quinn wasn't about to let himself become a pawn in Alex's game. He was planning to gather more vampires to take down Alex.

And even if the vampires couldn't defeat Alex, Quinn could take advantage of the chaos during their battle to slip away and avoid being captured again.

"Run faster, faster!"

The thought of possibly escaping Alex and returning to his old, comfortable life filled Quinn with renewed energy. He pushed himself harder, running toward the nearest vampire stronghold.

"Selfishness, truly the nature of all creatures."

Watching Quinn race away, Alex smiled lightly and followed at a steady pace.

Even though Alex knew his goal was to eliminate more vampires, Quinn still didn't hesitate to run toward the stronghold. What was in his mind? Alex could guess without thinking: He was either trying to lead Alex into a trap, stirring up chaos with the vampires to ambush him, or he was planning to slip away during the confusion.

"Only strong power can ensure safety. I hope you don't disappoint me!"

Having learned from the previous encounter, Quinn knew that Alex would never allow him to feed on humans while escaping. So, as he ran, Quinn didn't waste time hunting for blood. Instead, he focused all his energy on running, knowing that only by reaching the stronghold before Alex caught up could he hope to survive.

Under the pressure of potential death, Quinn ran faster than ever. In just half an hour, he had crossed one street and reached the entrance of a grand hotel.

"Still not behind me?!!"

Looking back, Quinn didn't see Alex anywhere, and he couldn't help but rejoice. He thought he had shaken him off, so he quickly rushed into the hotel.

"This is one of the vampire strongholds."

As Quinn entered the hotel, Alex, several hundred meters away, chuckled softly. Using his clairvoyant vision, he could clearly see Quinn's movements. There was no need for a close pursuit.

"The sun is about to rise... hmm, I'll come back tomorrow night."

Looking at the stars above, Alex decided against attacking now. Making a move during the day could cause panic among the citizens, attracting government attention and pursuit. Alex had already decided he didn't want to clash with the government unless absolutely necessary.

Furthermore, the sunlight could destroy vampires, draining their vitality. That wasn't worth the risk.

Suppressing his excitement, Alex turned around and headed toward his home in Flushing, Queens.

"I'll be back tomorrow night, Quinn. You'd better be ready!"
