Chapter 25: Shoot to kill.
After he was sure everyone had gotten enough rest. Realizing that should Roy or Sam and Dean speak it could give rise to another argument, Alexander decided it was best if he spoke.
Calling for the group's attention. He explained how they would be setting out to search shortly. However, he added one more detail, a deadline. Which immediately drew dissatisfaction from Hailey as she questioned his decision with furious indignation.
Listening to her angry eruption, Alexander calmly explained. "Look I understand, if it were up to me we would stay out here for as long as it took searching for them." He looked to see if she was still listening. "But, there's something or someone out there, that knows these forests better than us, that wishes us harm, and if that wasn't bad enough our stuff has been stolen. Our gear is gone." He tried to convey the severity of the situation. "As it stands, We will not make it past nightfall. So I believe it best to be out of here before nightfall. With or without Tommy and his friends."
Hailey tried to rebuttal but couldn't find the words nor reason, she sat there stuttering. She desperately looked around the group in the hopes of finding a person who would help her in arguing her case.
But sadly she was to be disappointed, looking around their small misshapen circle she found them all looking away in guilt. She was heartbroken. Even Sam who was constantly against Alexander didn't speak up on her behalf.
She was dejected, crystal sparkles welling up in her eyes. A lone tear ran across her face.
Seeing her like this saddened Alexander, he stepped forward to comfort her, but before he could, they heard a rustle in the forest.
All the guys present were immediately alert to it, their heads snapped almost simultaneously toward the sound.
The forest fell into a tense pin-drop silence.
Hailey looked around in confusion but slowly picked up that something wasn't right.
The group waited, watching, tense.
Sam began to speak but before he could even get the words out.
"Mayb-
Another rustle of leaves and brunches, as a shadow darted through the forest.
"I see something," Roy announced before giving chase.
"Roy, wait!" Alexander called out but it was too late—Roy was already running into the woods.
Sam and Dean followed, with Alexander quickly urging Hailey and Ben to get up. "Move, move, move." Pulling them their to feet and pushing them along as they chased after Roy and the others.
Roy darted through the forest, rifle in hand, chasing after the shadowy figure he believed he saw. Sam and Dean were close behind him, with Alexander and the rest following.
Once again the group found themselves running through the forest. Roy ducking and weaving the trees and brunches, hot on the tail of the shadowy figure. With everyone else also chasing after Roy.
But soon, running after the shadow was taking its toll, he couldn't keep up and the gap between them was slowly widening. He was about to lose it, not wanting to give up. Roy stopped and took a stand, he carefully aimed his rifle at the running shadow, cautious to make sure he would hit his mark, and fired.
*Poww.*
The loud gunshot echoed through the woods. Roy watched his shot hit its mark and loudly rejoiced. " I shot it. I shot it." He continued his chase, soon reaching the spot where he believed he fell the shadow.
And looked around but was soon baffled. He stood there confused at his surroundings.
Sam and his brother soon joined him and found him in his confused state. They had heard the gunshot and his earlier celebration.
"I don't understand." He muttered. Pointing to a spot near a tree. " I shot it here. Right there. It should be here. Iiit.itt. it should be right there." He stuttered. " There should at least be something—blood, saliva, fur, a fucking claw?" He said getting increasingly agitated.
Dean tried to calm him down, but Roy angrily shrugged him off. "Get off me!"
With hunters as experienced as Roy they know when they have hit their prey and they know what to expect to see when prey is hit, no matter the animal. But he saw nothing—no trail, no blood, no disturbance. Nothing.
Alexander's group soon joined the three and immediately sensed something was not right. "What's wrong?" he asked.
But received no answer. So he opted to look around to try to piece together what happened.
As he did, he heard a rustle followed by a low growl. Hailey and Ben were panting heavily, trying to catch their breath. Roy seemed out of it, dazed and the brothers were having a little conversation between themselves.
So Alexander with his slightly better hearing was the only one who had heard the sound.
Just as the growl came, the rustle followed only this time, unlike last time. The sound wasn't moving away from them or around them. But towards them.
This all happened too fast for Alexander to alert everyone but he did his best. Swiftly grabbing the nearby Hailey and Ben he shouted "Get down!" Before forcefully pushing them to the ground.
Just as he did, a large shadowy figure seemingly flew over them, right where they were standing. Whooshing the air as it moved, angrily snarling and growling.
Charging at Sam, Dean, and Roy.
Hearing Alexander's cry Sam and Dean reacted but not quick enough. Opting to turn to Alexander than to listen to his instruction and were faced with an enraged snarling creature flying at them.
Blitzing past them, effortlessly knocking them out of the way. Charging at what seemed to be its main target the one behind the brothers, Roy.
Roy just pulled out of his stupor by Alexander's loud warning turned around only to be face-to-face with the creature.
Before he could even process what was happening. He was grabbed and slammed viciously into a nearby tree. But it didn't stop there. Razor-like claws dug deep into his chest as he was mercilessly pulled up the tree, his back grating against the tree bark like sandpaper. His pained, shrill shrieks echoed. Until there was a crunch, then silence.
*Thud.*
His lifeless body fell from the treetop.
