Chapter 44: The Kent Family’s Transformation
"I've seen the devil, and they're not as handsome as us!" Robert shook his head, releasing an energy wave. Sloan and the car were instantly obliterated, leaving nothing behind, while Robert soared into the sky and flew home.
As for the codebook, Robert didn't even look through it, after all, translating the messages from the Fate Loom was Clark's job, and Robert wasn't good at it.
Although sometimes Robert felt that Clark wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, he had to admit, Clark's brain was still quite impressive! And when Clark saw Sloan die like that, his heart didn't stir much, as if he had already begun to get used to Robert's way of doing things.
It's not that he got used to Robert's indiscriminate killing, but he gradually came to understand that for assassins from the Brotherhood who came knocking, perhaps eliminating them was indeed the correct way to handle things...
"Here!" After a while, Robert returned home and handed the codebook to Clark.
"Hm? Robert? Why are you back? Didn't you go to school today?" However, when Clark just took the codebook, Martha saw the returning Robert and asked with some confusion.
"Ah, this..." A trace of embarrassment flashed across Robert's face, nowhere near the ruthlessness he had when killing people. Instead, he turned his gaze to Clark, waiting for him to help out of the situation.
Clark's expression also stiffened for a moment. Too much had happened today, from the Brotherhood's two assassins coming to snipe them to Robert's long-distance raid, directly dealing with the Brotherhood, killing a large number of assassins, and bringing back the Fate Loom's codebook.
Robert's continuous killing made Clark somewhat uncomfortable, plus his attention was all on why the Fate Loom wanted him dead, he had long forgotten that Robert didn't go to school.
The two brothers exchanged glances, not knowing how to answer the question for a moment, and so began a silent conversation to shift the blame.
Robert: "Clark, this was all because of you, so you get to explain!"
Clark: "You know I'm not good at lying. This kind of thing is better suited for you..."
Robert: "Then forget it, let's just tell the truth. We're going to have to face it someday anyway!"
Clark: "No! Let me think of a better way to cover this up!"
"What's going on? What are you two secretly doing?" Seeing Robert and Clark staring at each other without speaking, Martha, unaware of their silent communication, suspiciously sized up her two sons.
"What's wrong? Hm? Robert, why are you at home? Clark, what's that book in your hand? Do we have such an old book at home?" At this moment, Jonathan also came over. When he saw the codebook in Clark's hand, he was also taken aback and asked instinctively.
"Uh..." Clark was originally making up an excuse, but was directly interrupted by Jonathan. After a moment of thought, Robert decided to just tell the truth.
After all, Robert's exploration of this world had just begun. Today, a Fate Loom had targeted Clark, and who knows if a Fate Printer would print out Clark's name tomorrow? So, it was better to tell Martha and Jonathan the truth to prepare them mentally.
"It's like this..." Thinking this, Robert glanced at Clark and said softly, "Today, two assassins came to kill us..."
"What?!" The Kents exclaimed, rushing forward to check if Clark and Robert were injured.
"Robert!" Clark's expression changed slightly, helpless at Robert's irrational betrayal. He was about to come up with a perfect answer, but Robert had already spilled the beans.
"What's going on? Was it because of the time you saved me that you were discovered?" Jonathan suddenly thought of something and asked his sons worriedly.
"The exact reason isn't clear yet, but it probably doesn't matter, right?" Robert shrugged, looking at Clark and said, "How about this? You crack the code first, and I'll explain today's events to mom and dad?"
"If you think you can explain the things you did, then go ahead!" Clark glared at Robert and opened the codebook.
"What's the problem? Do you think mom and dad will get mad because I fought back against the assassins?" Robert spread his hands and narrated the day's events to the Kents, who gradually opened their mouths in shock.
"You killed so many people..." Martha said tensely, looking at Robert.
"Mom, they were assassins, they got what they deserved, and they were threatening us..." Robert blinked, but he was cut off before he could finish.
"You weren't hurt, were you? Were you scared? Did you leave any traces at the scene? Clark said the police had gone there, right?" Martha asked Robert worriedly.
"Uh..." The sudden turn of events left Robert at a loss, even Clark was surprised and looked up at Martha.
If it had been the Martha from before, although she would still care for Robert, she definitely wouldn't be indifferent to Robert killing people, even if those people were assassins.
But the tornado that nearly took Jonathan away made Martha cherish her family even more. She didn't want to see her family lost again.
Moreover, according to Robert's description, the Brotherhood was a group of ruthless assassins who had already targeted their family. So, what was wrong with Robert retaliating? Martha was still kind and would not agree with Robert killing innocents, but if someone wanted to harm her family, she would definitely stand firmly with her family!
This tornado was a significant catalyst in the Kent family's mindset transformation, even Jonathan was now seriously saying, "Let's figure out why Clark was targeted first. If it's because of your abilities being exposed, we might need to think about leaving!"
"I've told you before, I didn't want you to show your abilities in front of others. But if my words made you hesitate to defend yourselves in a crisis, then it's my failure as a father!"
Jonathan's core reason for not wanting his sons' abilities exposed was to protect them. But if his sons' safety was threatened, what use was there in keeping their abilities hidden? Jonathan was willing to sacrifice himself to keep his sons' secret, but he absolutely wouldn't allow his sons to give up fighting in a crisis when they had the ability to face it!
Jonathan was kind, but he had something he wanted to protect, and his family was what he wanted to protect. If today he encountered Brotherhood assassins targeting his family, he would also shoot without hesitation, not letting his family be threatened! Could a man who can't protect his own family still be considered a man?!
