Chapter 5: Stealing Kill and a new beast soul
Having finally reached the summit of the hill, Han Sen paused for a moment to catch his breath and soak in the panoramic view before him, his heart racing with exhilaration. He directed his gaze toward Sunset Slope, a chaotic battlefield teeming with thousands of people locked in a fierce struggle. Amidst the cacophony of shouts, battle cries, and the clashing of weapons, one creature stood out—a monstrous behemoth that seemed to be the embodiment of nightmares.
The creature was a bizarre amalgamation of different beasts: it had the formidable head of a bull, a muscular upper body reminiscent of a human warrior, and the powerful lower body of a horse. With a presence that commanded both fear and attention, it wielded a massive double-edged golden axe, glinting ominously in the sunlight as it forged its path through the tumultuous crowd. People around it faltered, unable to withstand the devastating force of each swing as the axe cleaved through armor and flesh alike.
In that tense moment, Han Sen's eyes widened as he witnessed the monster poised to swing its axe at none other than Son of Heaven—a renowned person that was the envy of many. Clutching his blood-red sword tightly, Son of Heaven realized the futility of confronting the beast head-on; instead, he chose to retreat hastily, urging his steed backward to escape the impending destruction.
With a thunderous roar, the monster's double-edged axe descended with brutal intent, striking Son of Heaven's prized triceratops-like beast soul mount. In an instant, the creature was split in two, a gruesome spectacle that left Han Sen and the spectators breathless. The sight of Son of Heaven's heart shattering along with the demise of his mount was palpable; a mutant beast soul mount was an extremely rare treasure, comparable in value to that of a small interstellar spaceship. The loss was not merely material; it was a blow to honor, pride, and the spirit of a warrior.
In that chaotic scene, the desperation and despair echoed through the ranks of fighters witnessing the monstrous display of power, reminding them all that in this world of survival, loss was an ever-looming specter that awaited those who dared to challenge fate.
It seemed the hunters had dramatically underestimated the creature they sought to capture, and the reckoning was upon them. Just as they attempted to encircle it with their crude traps and reckless bravado, the immense beast broke free with a ferocity so palpable that it sent the enthusiastic hunters scattering like leaves before a tempest. It charged up the hill where I was hiding, its imposing figure a masterpiece of muscle and primal grace, twisting its massive body around to assess the smug hunters below with a piercing, almost mocking glint in its eyes.
After a tense pause that felt like an eternity, the creature reared back and bolted in a completely different direction, its powerful legs propelling it with astonishing speed, leaving the hunters scrambling and cursing in its wake. I couldn't shake the feeling that no one, not even the most experienced of them, could hope to contain this magnificent beast when suddenly, from the chaos below, a figure emerged riding a triceratops-like mount, a sight to behold in its own right. With a flourish that caught the last rays of sunlight, he pulled out a bow that radiated danger and a strange power, accompanied by an arrow that looked anything but ordinary.
I recognized it instantly; it was one of those single-use beast souls, a weapon steeped in dark lore and mystique. An intense shiver ran down my spine as I understood the intent behind it. In sync with the mount's rider, I summoned my own beast soul bow and arrow, feeling the energy crackling at my fingertips as I steadied my aim, sensing the latent power thrumming beneath my skin. The air thickened with tension as the hunter prepared to release his shot, the anticipation hanging heavy like a charged storm cloud. It was clear his intention was to hit the creature immediately after the impact of that special arrow, a dual assault designed to both incapacitate and dominate. The fate of the beast—and perhaps the hunters themselves—hung in the balance, as I braced for what was to come.
A moment later, the electrifying special arrow launched by the beast mount guy smashed directly into the creature's chest, resulting in a thunderous explosion that lit up the surrounding area. My own arrow, loosed just a heartbeat after the impact, soared through the air with a mesmerizing grace, hitting its target just as the monster's life force began to wane.
In a swift motion, I ducked down, not even bothering to witness the screeching demise of the creature as my arrow found its mark, driven by precision and destiny. A smirk crept across my face as I overheard the mount guy ranting passionately about how the monstrous fiend had presumed it could escape the wrath of its killer after taking down his beloved mount.
[Sacred-Blood creature, Bloody Slayer, eliminated. Sacred-Blood beast soul Bloody Slayer gained. Eat-]
I chose to ignore the rest of the exhilarating notification resounding in my head from the sanctuary, knowing that I had successfully accomplished my mission. The lure of the shimmering golden axe down below in the fray was tempting; I contemplated dashing down to seize it, but a flicker of wisdom grounded my thoughts. Further provoking the chaotic crowd seemed like a poor strategy, and truth be told, I already had access to ample resources. Even without the axe, my coffers were well stocked, overflowing with the spoils of prior victories.
Fortunately, my strategic position on the hill provided the perfect cover, allowing me to slip away unseen, my adrenaline still buzzing from the confrontation. As I melted back into the shadows, I couldn't shake the electric thrill of the chase and the intoxicating sense of triumph that surged through my veins.
I was reasonably confident that no one would trace any wrongdoing back to me, but just to be on the safe side, I ventured deeper into the mountains instead of returning to the shelter. These rugged peaks were known as the Tekees Mountains, a mere few hours north of the Steel Armor Shelter. Most folks tended to steer clear of this region due to its unpredictable ecosystem. Areas where ordinary beasts grazed could shift without warning, and a roaming mutant creature could emerge out of nowhere. As a result, this terrain was typically only hunted by seasoned groups, and they were few and far between. I figured that spending a day or two hunting here would leave no room for anyone to suspect I was the kill stealer.
That said, I wasn't just mindlessly slaughtering everything in my path. I focused on finding smaller mutant creatures that I could consume in one sitting while also gathering a variety of beast souls along the way.
