Chapter 1: The Star Pet World
"Bro, it's time to get up."
Huh?
Who's calling me handsome?
Wait a minute.
Don't tell me I've been sleeping alone? Who's talking?!
With confusion and suspicion, Su Ping quickly opened his eyes, turned his head, and nearly had his soul scared out of his body!
Beside his pillow, leaning against it, was a bloody ghost face, its mouth twisted in a sinister smile, with sharp, white teeth glaring.
"Sh*t!!"
Su Ping shuddered and slapped it with his hand.
But his hand passed right through the ghost face and hit the soft pillow instead—he struck nothing!
The ghost face slightly grinned, revealing a crimson tongue.
Su Ping, horrified, spun around and tried to run, but in his panic, he didn't pay attention, and with a slap of his hand, he fell face-first onto the floor.
Pain!
Su Ping felt as if his nose was about to break, the sharp pain stinging him.
But just the thought of the terrifying ghost on his bed made him feel cold all over.
"Ugh… Pfft…"
It seemed like someone was holding in laughter, but couldn't contain it. Suddenly, laughter rang out from nearby.
Su Ping jumped in fright—was the ghost laughing?!
"Hahaha… Su Ping, do you want to kill me with laughter? You got scared just by this? You're so pathetic!"
The laughter came from the other side of the room.
Su Ping was dumbfounded.
He turned to look.
There, at the foot of the bed, stood a pretty young girl in orange cartoon pajamas, with bright eyes and a cute smile, but right now, she was laughing uncontrollably, looking anything but graceful.
What's going on?
Su Ping was dazed, but then, he suddenly noticed that the surroundings were a bit different.
The most obvious change was the giant monster poster on the wall behind the girl, probably from some movie.
Clearly, this wasn't his room!
Su Ping had never been the type to decorate his room with posters.
Where's the ghost?
Su Ping quickly thought of the terrifying ghost he had seen earlier and turned around in a hurry.
To his surprise, the bed was empty, and the ghost was gone!
Had it left?
Su Ping was stunned for a moment, then sighed in relief.
Suddenly, a black shadow jumped out from under the blankets—it was a black cat.
Rather than jumping, it more like rolled out—it was so fat that it looked like a ball.
"Snowball, come here."
The girl called to the cat.
The black cat heard, and its short legs paddled as it flipped its body around. After shaking itself a few times, it glanced at the shocked Su Ping and sauntered over to the girl with a graceful, little cat stride.
Maybe it was just a feeling, but Su Ping couldn't shake the thought that the cat was looking down on him.
Then, Su Ping noticed something—the black cat had two sharp black horns on its head, and a few strands of dark red fur in the pattern on its forehead, resembling flames.
A question mark slowly appeared above his head…
Buzz!
Suddenly, the world seemed to tremble.
Su Ping's vision blurred, and his mind was bombarded with a flood of information from all directions—like a torrent crashing down on him.
Su Ping? Su Lingyue?
Star Beasts?
Another world?
The chaotic flood of information kept pouring in, and Su Ping felt like his head was going to explode from the pain. He clenched his teeth, barely managing to hold back a scream.
He didn't know how long it lasted, but slowly, the storm of confusion in his mind calmed down, and memories began to surface in order, piece by piece.
So, he had transmigrated…
Su Ping was stunned for a moment, realizing why he was in this strange room, encountering this unfamiliar girl, and this strange cat.
But… I was just sleeping at home, how did I end up here? Was it my hand exercises before bed?
Su Ping laughed bitterly inside as he began to piece together the memories in his mind.
"This is a world similar to Earth, but with more advanced technology, already having entered the space age. However, this world doesn't focus on technological development but on extraordinary Star Beasts!"
"There are all kinds of Star Beasts, closely tied to human society. There are tool pets responsible for infrastructure, transport, daily life, even research! Meanwhile, Star Beasts of war handle interstellar exploration and wars, with a nation's power and status often determined by the strength of their battle pets!"
"Star Beasts…"
As Su Ping absorbed more and more information, the shock only grew. He finally understood what the ghost he saw earlier was all about.
"Devil-type battle pet, Phantom Flame Beast, whose main abilities are illusion creation and flame element manipulation…"
That Phantom Flame Beast was the strange cat—an aggressive, devil-type battle pet. It was a rare species, a Star Beast with both spiritual and elemental abilities, and incredibly expensive!
The fact that such a rare Star Beast was being used to prank him by "his" sister, Su Lingyue…
After reviewing the memories of his previous self, Su Ping couldn't help but laugh in frustration. The siblings were real enemies. They had disliked each other since childhood. Su Ping used to prank and scare his sister, but now, the tables had turned, and he was the one living in constant fear.
The change had happened when they entered different schools at the age of twelve.
One went to an ordinary school.
The other went to a Star Beast Battle Master Academy!
In this world focused on Star Beasts, not everyone could become a Star Beast Battle Master. Only those with a special core talent could form contracts with Star Beasts!
Clearly, "Su Ping" didn't have this talent, and it was something determined from birth. In other words, he was always destined to be an ordinary person.
However, when they were kids, neither Su Ping nor Su Lingyue understood this, and as a result, Su Ping always bullied his sister. By the time they realized their differences, it was already too late.
Su Lingyue was no easy target. She had kept track of every instance Su Ping had bullied her, and over the years, she had gotten back at him in spades.
Now, the two had completely diverged in their paths—one was a genius, attending a prestigious Star Beast school, while the other couldn't even get into a normal university and had to drop out to help manage the family business.
"Hey, what are you doing standing there like a fool? Did you really knock your brain out?" Su Lingyue, seeing Su Ping frozen in place, raised an eyebrow in concern, but it wasn't for his well-being—she just didn't want her parents to blame her.
"Huh?"
Su Ping finally snapped out of it and looked at his sister, who stood with her arms crossed, looking arrogant. He sighed and said, "Please don't play these kinds of pranks anymore."
Now that his body was in control, he didn't want to continue living in his sister's prank-fueled torment.
Su Lingyue was taken aback for a moment. Normally, in this situation, Su Ping would immediately jump up and start yelling at her, but today he was unusually calm.
Was he trying to soften her heart by holding it in?
"Hmph!" Su Lingyue snorted and turned around. "As long as you're not brain-dead, maybe a few knocks to the head will help you get smarter!" She then left with a final cold laugh. "Don't dawdle. Come down for breakfast before Mom calls me again!"
Bang!
The door slammed behind her.
Su Ping gave a bitter smile. Why did his sister seem more like a violent girl than a cute and obedient younger sister?
Suddenly, the door opened again.
Su Ping jumped, but it was just Su Lingyue returning. Her cold face peeked from behind the door. "Also, don't go complaining to Mom. Otherwise…" She made a cutting motion across her neck.
Bang!
Before Su Ping could respond, the door was slammed shut again.
"…"
After a while, once things outside had quieted down, Su Ping finally got up from the floor.
Looking around the room, he noticed several Star Beast figurines and posters. Although he used to be an ordinary person, he had studied Star Beasts almost as much as a real Star Beast Battle Master.
Of course, this wasn't because he liked Star Beasts. Quite the opposite—he hated them. The reason he had studied them was to find a way to defeat them using ordinary methods!
More specifically, he wanted to figure out how to beat his sister's Star Beasts.
But after years of research, he was still no closer to success.
Looking back on the past eighteen years of this guy's life, Su Ping couldn't help but feel a little emotional. He had achieved nothing and had even offended the one person who could have been his support. As a child, he used to play pranks and make his sister's life miserable—things like dropping caterpillars in her lunchbox or scaring her at night. He had almost become her childhood nightmare.
Now, the leg he had taken for granted had turned into an enemy, and his sister, who wasn't easy to deal with, had become his adult nightmare.
Su Ping thought to himself that he had to find a way to reconcile with this "leg" of a sister, or he'd be tormented with even stranger pranks until he went mad.
After tidying up, Su Ping put on his slippers and went downstairs.
"Why are you so slow? The porridge's going to get cold. Come eat."
His mother, Li Qingru, said. She looked to be in her forties, gentle and graceful.
At the dining table, Su Lingyue was already sitting and eating, with the "Snowball" illusion flame beast placed on the chair beside her, which happened to be Su Ping's.
Su Ping's lips twitched slightly. Even during breakfast, he could feel the malicious intent…
"I'm here."
Su Ping moved to the living room and brought another chair to sit down. Looking at the rich breakfast of congee, meat pies, and soy milk, he realized he was quite hungry.
Su Lingyue raised an eyebrow and glanced at Su Ping. She deliberately used Snowball to take up his seat, trying to provoke him into getting angry, yelling, and causing their mother to scold him. But to her surprise, this guy actually endured?
Strange.
Su Lingyue's gaze became slightly cautious. This was not like Su Ping. Was he up to something again?
"Mom, I'm done. I'm heading to the academy now," Su Lingyue said, finishing quickly, and stood up.
Li Qingru looked at her about to leave and said, "Xiaoyue, wait a moment."
"Huh?" Su Lingyue turned her head.
"Recently, your brother's shop hasn't been doing well, there's no foot traffic. How about you let your Snowball stay there for a while to attract some attention?" Li Qingru suggested tentatively.
Su Lingyue froze for a moment, glancing at Su Ping, who was eating congee. She immediately rolled her eyes and said irritably, "Mom, ever since you handed the shop over to this guy, it's been getting worse and worse. Do you know why? It's because this guy's always messing around. Do you remember the last time he almost got reported to the Star Pet Association? Someone came to properly board a 'Message Bird,' but after less than a week, when they took it back, the bird kept calling 'stupid idiot' to everyone. It was swearing nonstop, and not long after, it was beaten to death. The case remains unsolved to this day!
And now you're asking me to trust him with my Snowball? This is a high-level Star Pet that could potentially reach rank 8! If you're willing, I don't mind. After all, Snowball was bought by you."
Li Qingru opened her mouth but couldn't find a response and could only sigh deeply.
If it weren't for her poor health needing rest, she wouldn't have let Su Ping take over the business so early.
Su Ping saw the unfriendly look Su Lingyue shot his way and said nothing, continuing to eat his congee, ignoring her.
"Hmph!" Su Lingyue sneered, picked up Snowball, who was still gnawing on a bone, went back to her room to change, and left.
A moment later, Su Ping finished his breakfast. As usual, under Li Qingru's instructions, he rode his bike to the shop.
The shop was a Star Pet store.
Su Ping was a half-baked Star Pet Breeder. Though he was called a breeder, in reality, he mostly took care of Star Pets.
After all, a true master breeder could change a pet's potential and rank, and their status wasn't much lower than that of a Star Pet Warrior—sometimes even higher!
As he rode along, Su Ping saw buildings similar to those on Earth, but the only difference was that most pedestrians had strange-looking Star Pets by their side.
"This really is another world…" Su Ping thought with a sigh. Everything felt like a dream, but it was real.
Soon, he arrived at his family's Star Pet store.
The shop was at the end of a commercial street, in a relatively secluded spot, though it used to be quite popular. This was because Su Ping's mother, Li Qingru, was a certified Star Pet Breeder in the Federation, although only a junior one, running a small pet store was more than enough. As a result, they had a lot of repeat customers.
However, ever since the shop was handed over to Su Ping, the situation had taken a nosedive.
How could you expect someone who hated Star Pets to take good care of them?
Clang!
Su Ping lifted the roll-up door, and sunlight streamed in. He could see the dust floating in the air.
It seemed the shop hadn't been cleaned in a while, and a strong odor of urine and pet waste filled the air, somewhat pungent.
Su Ping held his breath slightly and frowned.
"Target detected within range, soul suitable for contract, performing contract detection…"
"Contract completed, system binding in progress…"
"Binding complete… preparing to activate…"
Suddenly, a cold mechanical voice rang in Su Ping's mind.
System?
Su Ping froze for a moment, and his eyes suddenly sparkled.
So, it has finally arrived…
