Chapter 16: Ancient One 1
Even the System was giving its blessings, though I would have done it even without any quests generated.
1 hour would be more than enough time to clear out the entire building with the help of [Detection].
Just as I was about to leap off the building and start a massacre, a sudden voice stopped me in my tracks.
"Lee Jae Sung. I would like to request an audience."
My blood froze as I turned to the source of the voice. Standing not far away from me, was a tall but lithe figure adorned in robes of yellow. The figure had no hair, but there were still feminine features.
The Ancient One…!? How!? How does she know of my existence? How did she know that I would be here!? My mind was suffocated with endless questions. [Gamer's Mind] worked overtime to calm my nerves and dampen my shock. Yet, I was still flabbergasted.
Thinking about it rationally, I noticed that she didn't seem to be able to see me. Her eyes, though subtle, was flicking around as though trying to find a trace of my presence.
As for how she knew I would be here - the golden amulet worn around her neck was as clear an answer as any. Her presence confirmed a long-held suspicion of mine. The current Sorcerer Supreme, wielder of the Eye of Agamotto could peer through time and see the future. It was no longer surprising that she knew I would be here.
After a few more moments of silence, The Ancient One spoke again, "Please release your concealment, Lee Jae Sung. I only wish to talk."
She even knew about my concealment… My fists clenched tighter. Should I run? No, she knew my name, which means she would also likely know where I lived. Where could I run to that could elude the Sorcerer Supreme herself?
In that case, should I… kill her? Pfft, I scoffed, that was too much of a joke in these circumstances. I doubt even Doctor Strange could kill The Ancient One if she was not willing to die. Having lived for centuries, accumulating knowledge, perfecting techniques, and having siphoned power from the Dark Dimension for an equivalent amount of time, her power level was probably on the same level as Stormbreaker Thor.
The only reason why she died in the movies, despite have already foreseen the time and circumstances of her death, was because she knew that her death was necessary for Stephen Strange to take up the mantle of the Sorcerer Supreme, and in turn, Doctor Strange was necessary for the events of End Game.
"Worry not, Lee Jae Sung. If I wanted to kill you, I would have already done so 4 years and 97 days ago… when I visited your crib in Park Slope two days after you were born." She said in a confident tone, and a faint smile on her face.
I too had a rueful smile as I deactivated my [Concealment]. There was no point in hiding any further now that it has come to this point.
She didn't seem to be able to find me, due to my max level [Concealment], but what was I going to do? Stay in [Concealment] forever? Even I, an adept in the Mystic Arts, knew two tracking spells. How many methods would the Sorcerer Supreme have in her arsenal?
The Ancient One turned to look at me, her eyes finally landing on my own for the first time tonight. Her smile deepened, "I was worried I might have been wrong for a second. Your concealment truly is mystifying."
"You are saying that you might have left if I kept hiding for a little longer? What a shame." I joked.
She chuckled lightly, "No, I wouldn't have. I knew you would be here. After all, I have seen you, even if I cannot see you."
My gaze turned serious, "So, why are you here then? I assume you already know everything there is to know about me."
The Ancient One shook her head, "Not as much as you think I do."
"Oh? Now you have my curiosity. What do you know about me then, pray tell?" My calm tone was not a disguise, nor was I putting up a brave front. I had already rationally deduced that The Ancient One would easily have a hundred and one methods to take my life if she wanted to. The reason why I was still breathing meant she had no such intentions.
She brought her hands together and opened the amulet hung around neck. A green glow was emitted from the stone within the amulet.
I exhaled deeply. The Time Stone, just a few feet away from me. Dear God.
"This is The Eye of Agamotto, or more commonly known as the Time Stone. It allows its users to peer through time and glimpse the possible futures…" The Ancient One studied my expressions and continued, "Though it seems you are already aware of what it is and what it can do."
I schooled my expressions, mentally cursing that just looking at one of the Infinity Stones made me seem like a country bumpkin standing with slack jaws in the middle of Times Square.
"Then do you know this too? June 16, 1995. That day, for some unknown reason, the future changed. For centuries I had known what was to come, or at least possibilities of what may lie in the future. Though there are variations, both big and small, branching out in to infinite possibilities, they never changed. Yet, the future, which I always have been so certain of, was suddenly something I did not recognise."
She closed the amulet, once more hiding the soft green glow of the Time Stone.
June 16 1995… How could I not know this date? It was the day of my birth. Which means that the future had changed from the moment I was born…
