Chapter 95: Trap for Who?
Kurenai's crimson eyes swiveled around, assessing the situation. "Are you alright, Kiba?"
"No problem, Kurenai sensei!" Kiba replied through gritted teeth.
Nodding slightly, Kurenai spurred her student to push through the pain, "Stay strong, Kiba. We'll get through this together."
"Yeah- Akamaru!"
Akamaru sensed Kiba's distress and sprang into action. With a fierce growl, the faithful ninja dog sank his teeth into one of the enemy ninja's hand, causing him to release his grip on Kiba's arm.
The Inuzuka prodigy seized the opportunity, mustering his remaining strength to send his fist crashing into the other assailant's jaw.
Bam! The devastating impact reverberated through the night, and the ninja crumpled to the ground.
But Kiba's ordeal was far from over. His legs were still ensnared by the other enemy ninja, their grip vice-like and unyielding!
Well, with hands free, that was easier to handle. Swish! Kiba's hands dived down, putting his elongated nails to good use!
Swiping multiple times, his claws cut into the hands restraining his legs, causing them to recoil back into the ground.
Leveraging the newfound freedom, Kiba popped a food pill as he stumbled backward, barely avoiding collision with a third ninja who stood behind him.
"Yo, what you doing there?" Sweat dripped down Kiba's brow as their eyes met.
However, he soon noticed the ninja's vacant eyes and that the enemy was frozen in place like a statue. "Heh! Trapped in Kurenai sensei's genjutsu?"
Grinning, Kiba's adrenaline-fueled senses caught sight of the presented opportunity, and he slashed his claw across the immobilized ninja's throat.
The clash of steel-like claws against flesh, punctuated by the enemy's lifeless thud to the ground. It was an all too familiar event for Kiba.
However, a chill ran down Kiba's spine when his eyes locked onto the grotesque wound he made on the ninja's lifeless body, "No blood?"
Meanwhile, Kurenai found herself locked in a deadly dance with the masked assailant.
Clang! Clink! Clang! Their kunai clashed with lightning speed, the metallic echoes ringing in their ears.
After the brief exchange, Kurenai's battle-honed instincts warned her that her opponent's taijutsu skills were on par, if not superior, to her own!
Realizing that she needed a tactical advantage, Kurenai leaped backward, creating distance between herself and her foe.
She swiftly formed seals, executing her signature genjutsu, seamlessly vanishing in place as she burrowed deep into the ground.
The masked assailant appeared momentarily disoriented, his body standing stiffly in place as if trapped.
With alarming speed, Kurenai popped out behind the masked assailant, her kunai aimed at his throat, ready to sever the vital connection between life and death, "This is the end-"
But a mysterious glimmer in the masked man's seemingly dull eyes hinted at a cunning plan yet to unfold.
It seems Kurenai still didn't learn to be wary even after her lesson with Itachi.
In that moment when Kurenai's kunai met flesh, a sharp pain tore through her abdomen, causing her to gasp in surprise, "Ugh-"
Kurenai looked down, her composed face twisting in horror when she discovered the masked ninja's kunai embedded in her belly!
Her eyes traced the masked ninja's hand, only to see it actually passing through his own body to deliver the backwards stab!
How? Time seemed to slow as Kurenai's mind raced, trying to comprehend the treachery that had unfolded before her eyes.
The realization dawned upon her with crushing weight - the assailant had merely feigned vulnerability, he had long escaped from her genjutsu or wasn't affected by her genjutsu at all!
Not only that, the opponent also had a strange assassination technique!
Gritting her teeth against the agony coursing through her, Kurenai mustered her chakra and retreated, burrowing into the ground once more and narrowly evading a lethal follow-up strike!
With some dirt and debris staining her figure, she emerged beside Kiba, her breath labored, her body trembling.
"Kurenai sensei!" "Kiba, I-"
"Arf! Arf! Arf!"
A shiver danced down the teacher-student duo's spines as their eyes swept across the battlefield, revealing a chilling truth.
The fallen ninjas, thought defeated, had rose up once more, each moving corpse serving as a harrowing testament to their enemy's cunning stratagem!
All of them were just feigning death to lull them into a false sense of security!
Even her initial illusion that ensnared the unsuspecting ninja now seemed to be nothing more than a crafted ruse, a web of deceit spun to lure her into the treacherous trap right in the heat of battle!
The pieces of the puzzle clicked into place: Everything was a scam – one solely aimed at her from the very beginning!
"Damn it!" Kiba growled. Witnessing Kurenai's deteriorating state, he moved to support her, ""Kurenai Sensei! How are you?"
"I was careless." Clutching her stomach, Kurenai's voice came out strained, laced with pain. "We... We need to retreat, Kiba. I've been injured... poisoned perhaps."
Eh, poison? A flicker of confusion danced across Kiba's face. He was also stabbed, but... how come he wasn't affected?
Kiba forcefully banished the bewildering thought from his mind and nodded with unyielding determination blazing within his eyes, "Don't worry, Kurenai sensei. I'll get us out of here."
"Good, Kiba, make it- cough! Cough! Cough-"
A tumultuous wave of coughs plagued Kurenai's frail form, forcing her to succumb to one knee, her other hand desperately clasping her mouth, her eyes reflecting a mixture of pain, alarm, and an unsettling realization that the enemy's strike held far more sinister consequences than she had initially feared.
"Kurenai sensei! Damn it!" Fear clawed at Kiba's heart as he saw the toll the short battle had taken on his powerful mentor, but he didn't have any more time to worry because their enemy was already lunging forward once again!
Fueled by a potent mix of desperation and righteous anger, Kiba stood his ground despite the unfair odds!
"Akamaru!" Kiba commanded, the bond between man and beast stronger than ever. "Let's open us a way out of here!"
"Arf!" Akamaru hopped steadfastly to Kiba's side.
Poof! Out from a cloud of smoke, a perfect replica of Kiba emerged once more!
"Fang over Fang!" With a synchronized battle cry, Kiba and Akamaru leaped forward, their bodies a blur of fangs, claws, and elemental fury.
The duo's drills turned the battlefield into the stage, sending the remaining three ninjas hurtling backward!
Then, the twin tornadoes deftly weaved through the chaos, engaging the dangerous masked assailant to keep him at bay.
"Kiba, go!" Amidst the fray, Kurenai's command reached Kiba.
Whoosh! Hastily bringing the momentum of their ninjutsu to an abrupt halt, Kiba and his canine companion drilled their feet into the ground, drawing a trail of claw marks across the warehouse, eventually coming to a stop protectively at Kurenai's side.
"Ready to go wild when you are Kurenai sensei!"
With one on each side to shield her from any impending danger, the two Kiba worked together to secure the pale Kurenai in their arms, tossing out a smoke bomb. Poof!
With smoke covering her actions, Kurenai swiftly flung out a barrage of kunai with explosive tags.
"Boom!" "Boom!" "Boom!"
The resounding explosions reverberated through the warehouse, filling the air with a cacophony of chaos and billowing smoke.
These explosions provided the perfect cover for the trio to dash out through the dark corridors, their desperate footsteps echoing against the walls.
But soon, a grin appeared on Kiba's face, "Heh, here it comes-"
"Boom!" Another delayed thunderous explosion echoed from behind them! The traps Kurenai had hastily laid to cover their retreat had been triggered!
Kurenai was indeed a fragile figure weakened by her injuries, but she was a true jonin and their capabilities surpassed mere appearances. Underestimating her prowess just because she was heavily injured would be a grave mistake!
Using the short time Kiba won by distracting the enemy, Kurenai had actually set up a treacherous path of concealed destruction to punish their pursuers!
"Ha! They fell for it!" Kiba's grin widened, his eyes betraying his excitement over the success of their strategy.
But his pride was short-lived. The two running Kibas abruptly screeched to a halt, their widened eyes reflecting shock and disbelief. "No way! When?! It wasn't like this when we came in!"
Kurenai followed Kiba's gaze, her heart sinking.
The corridor they had previously infiltrated unimpeded was now entangled in a labyrinth of thick spiderwebs, completely sealing off their escape route!
Naturally, the gate of the warehouse was buried deep within the recesses of webs, completely out of sight and beyond reach.
"Grrrr!" Akamaru's warning growls added a chilling accompaniment to their predicament.
"Not now Akamaru!" Kiba's anger flared and he pulled out a kunai, swiping out, intent on severing the suffocating amount of the web that barred their escape-
Only to be met with a disheartening fact: his kunai couldn't even cut through a single layer, even getting stuck in the web!
"Damn! These aren't normal webs! Why are these tough like that spider guy's webs?!" Abandoning his kunai, Kiba turned around, "Kurenai sensei, go back-"
But when he saw what was behind them, a sense of dread washed over him.
The charred gap in the wall that once offered an escape route was now blocked by an imposing formation of giant spiders, their predatory presence looming ominously as they crept along the walls.
And standing amidst the arachnid guardians was the masked assailant, who seemed to have survived the explosion completely unscathed!
With spiders creeping around him, the masked man was like their worse nightmare, exuding an aura of malevolence that intensified the air of impending doom, as if saying, "I am the destroyer of hopes - your hopes of retreat."
"Arf! Arf! Arf!" Akamaru's wild barks warned the duo of the impending danger.
Following Akamaru's line of sight, Kiba and Kurenai looked upwards, their eyes widened in dread. The ceiling teemed with grotesque giant spiders, their hairy legs waving with predatory anticipation.
Kurenai immediately shoved her student away, "Kiba, go!"
Just moments after Kurenai's warning, an onslaught of glistening webs hurtled down from the shadows above, descending upon them like a torrential rain!
Reacting quickly, Kiba and Akamaru skillfully rushed away from the onslaught of webs, evading their snare by inches!
However, the same could not be said for Kurenai.
With her movements impaired by her deteriorating injury, she ended up tightly trapped by the insidious webs with all her limbs immobilized and stuck in place!
"Kurenai sensei!" However, Kiba's concern morphed into alarm when a relentless onslaught of webs surged from the shadows behind him!
The enemy's purpose was clear! They were effectively closing off any avenue for evasion!
Caught within the relentless barrage, not even Akamaru with his small form and agility, could elude the clutches of the entangling webs, let alone Kiba.
Soon, the webs of danger had ensnared them completely. It's too late to even use their ninjutsu to drill out now! There was no escape!
"YO! Whoever you are, are you man enough to release me and fight me one on-" Splat. "Mphhh- mmph-" The noisy brat's mouth was sealed by a web.
Like ominous specters descending upon their ensnared prey, the monstrous spiders crawled toward the prey bundled in webs, their venomous fangs puncturing their skins and injecting a potent concoction that induced a creeping lethargy.
With this extra step, it painted their situation with shades of hopelessness.
Feeling her senses being suffused with a soporific haze, a minuscule trickle of blood escaped Kurenai's pale lips, trying her best to keep herself awake, "Cough- Cough- Strange human puppets, a powerful poison, spider summons... And such an elaborate layout, who is targeting us?"
Unfortunately, the spoken question was left hanging in the air.
With the spider's lullaby orchestrating her descent into a slumber, Kurenai's eyelids drooped and her bundle was soon shrouded in a veil of unnerving silence.
Seeing the layers of intricately spun webs finally enveloping his sights, the drowsy Kiba couldn't help but think, "Bugs again... Man, I hate bugs. Damn it... where is Shino when you need him?"
