Chapter 4: Battle with Kurenai
Well, let's take this as practice to familiarize himself with his abilities further. After all, this was his first combat in this world.
With a deep breath, Shino prepared for the final battle. He knew that this was his chance to prove himself and hopefully gain a sense of presence.
Or… maybe not. After all, a low presence is also good.
Shino readied himself for the final battle, his mind racing with possibilities.
How to deal with a genjutsu master? No, the real question was: how to get past her to get the precious scroll that his team needed to pass the test.
A nice challenge. Utilize all resources at his disposal to prove both his team's and his own worth.
Seeing Kiba fell prey to Kurenai's genjutsu, Shino knew that he had to act fast. He quietly signaled to Hinata, their team's silent but deadly member, to take the lead.
"Hinata, you're up," Shino said, his voice barely above a whisper. "We need to break Kiba free from that genjutsu. So-"
"Mmm," Hinata nodded, her Byakugan eyes flashing as she surveyed the battlefield before rushing forward.
No. Hey. Not even you! Is this Shino interruption disease infectious?! Why is the polite, shy Hinata also not letting him finish?
Hinata activated her Gentle Fist technique, striking at Kurenai's chakra points and attempting to disrupt her control over Kiba.
But Kurenai was no pushover, and she dodged Hinata's attack with ease.
"Well done, Hinata," she said, a hint of admiration in her voice. "But it won't be enough to beat me. You'll have to do better than that if you want to get that scroll."
Hinata didn't respond, instead focusing all of her attention on Kurenai. The two women circled each other, their eyes locked in a fierce battle of wills. Shino watched from the sidelines, his bugs at the ready.
Suddenly, Kurenai made her move, charging forward with a flurry of punches and kicks. Hinata dodged and weaved, her movements graceful and fluid. She tried to fight back, but Kurenai was relentless, and Hinata was soon on the defensive.
Shino knew that he couldn't let Hinata fight alone any longer. With a thought, bugs poured out from his body and flew towards Kurenai, distracting her and giving Hinata an opening.
Kurenai's eyes glanced over and widened a bit in surprise as if she just discovered Shino. With a step, Kurenai leapt back to dodge Hinata's attack and sunk through a tree, disappearing from the battlefield.
Moments later, Shino's eyes hidden behind his glasses shrunk. Unknowingly, arms wrapped him from behind as Kurenai stepped out from a tree behind him.
Suddenly, the Shino wrapped in Kurenai's hand deformed and transformed into a humanoid mass of bugs! This Shino was an insect clone!
Seeing the wave of bugs, Hinata who was running over to support completely stopped in place. Can't blame her. Most would hesitate when they see a bugs crawling all over...
Fortunately, this unsettling scene didn't last long. The humanoid shape deformed and the bugs became a wave that crashed towards Kurenai.
Shino, who was hiding behind a tree, watched from afar and thought it was a success for a moment. It was just a clone, so he only needs to suck the chakra and he would win!
Alas, things weren't that simple!
Shino watched in shock as his wave of bugs crashed right through Kurenai. He then shivered when he saw Kurenai's red eyes swivel over to this hiding location.
Dang! Illusion! When?
With a thought, he commanded his bugs to disturb his own chakra and he snapped out of the illusion almost instantly.
Shino had always speculated that the Aburame clan was immune to illusions, but he learned now that it was clearly not the case.
Instead, it was more apt to say that they could easily break out of illusions compared to others; however, it still needs them to recognize that they were in an illusion or set up a system where their bugs constantly disrupted their own chakra system.
Of course, the feasibility of this and the issues involved will have to be determined in the future. Right now, it wasn't something a genin like Shino has mastered.
Whoosh.
Shino dodged an incoming kunai with ease as he summoned a wave of bugs to form a wall to obscure vision. He then swiftly moved to hide behind another tree. Peeking towards the battlefield, Shino saw that Kurenai was still battling Hinata, who was now sweating from exhaustion.
Shino then swept his eyes towards Kiba. It should almost be there.
His glasses seemed to glint when he felt his bugs secretly climb up to Kiba's head. Then a bit of chakra was carefully transferred from the bugs to Kiba's body. It was a delicate process, one that required precise control and timing.
"Whoa! Illusion! When?" Kiba cried out in frustration, his frozen body quickly returning to action shortly after breaking free from the genjutsu.
Kiba's head swiveled around and saw Hinata who was fighting Kurenai. He grinned, his excitement rising, "Akamaru! Come!"
"Arf! Arf!"
He leapt forward to meet Kurenai head-on. "I'm ready for anything!" His declaration hung in the air as his tightly clenched fists charged at its target- only to miss.
"Be careful, Kiba-kun," Hinata warned as she stepped back, her voice soft and exhausted "Kurenai-sensei is a powerful opponent."
Kiba didn't need to be told twice. With a fierce battle cry, he launched himself at Kurenai again with Akamaru by his side. Hinata followed after with her hands glowing with chakra.
Seeing the duo gradually syncing up, Kurenai... used her greatest advantage, gracefully sinking into a nearby tree.
Hinata gasped for breath as Kurenai disappeared once again, blending into the foliage. She had been at it for what felt like hours, but it had only been minutes. She was already starting to feel the strain.
Kiba, on the other hand, was feeling invigorated. He had just broken out of Kurenai's illusion and was eager to prove himself.
Seeing Kurenai appear once more behind them, he charged at Kurenai, barking out orders to Hinata as he went. "Hinata, cover me! I'm going in!"
Shino watched as the battle unfolded, his eyes darting between Kiba and Hinata as they fought against their teacher. As time passed, he could see the strain on their face, the sweat pouring down their foreheads while they struggled to keep up with Kurenai's powerful attacks.
Well, he knew that he couldn't rely on them to win this fight. He had to act soon to turn the tide in their favor.
Fortunately, he had already been preparing. Sensing his secret set-up, Shino had a slight grin.
Unfortunately, no one could see his devious smile because his collar blocked out the lower half of his face. Well, what did you expect the collar was there for? Of course it's to hide the Aburame clan's scheming smile.
Complementing this were the glasses, used to conceal the cunning eyes of the Aburame clan members, who constantly schemed and planned behind their stoic facade. It was a common tactic among the Aburame clan, as they often relied on their intellect and strategy to succeed in battle rather than raw strength.
Staring at the scroll that was blatantly left open on the ground, Shino's eyes glinted, "It's about time."
With a wave of his hand, a wave of bugs rose from the ground and formed a thin box-shaped wall that surrounded the battling trio.
Wary of a sneak attack, Kurenai's red eyes swept over the wall as she calmly fought back against Kiba and Hinata. However, even after a couple of minutes, nothing happened. The wall just enclosed them inside, but did nothing.
Kurenai's furrowed her brows for a moment before her eyes inadvertently glanced towards the location of the scroll. Seeing the wall of bugs blocking her sight, her red eyes glinted with wisdom, a slight smile appearing on her face.
Outside, Shino pushed his glasses up like a studious scholar as he observed the box. Sensing that the mission was completed, he raised his hand and aimed it at the walls of bugs.
Clenching his hand into a fist, he inwardly uttered, "Bug Burial!"
Well. It wasn't actually called that, but he had to give a cool name right? He definitely wasn't copying a certain sand boy.
Shino watched the walls of bugs collapse inward and flow towards Kurenai like a wave. In the midst of this, he seemed to have heard a soft squeal, an annoying howl, and cute barks.
Of course, he ignored them. It's not because he was cold blooded, but because he knew his bugs won't hurt them. It was just passing by. At most it would give them an uncomfortable experience. Ahem.
Seeing his wave of bugs collapse onto Kurenai's clone, Shino couldn't help but inwardly exclaim in excitement. Did he finally do it?
Then, he was hit by a sense of disappointment when he saw his bugs flow right through the body of Kurenai once more.
"Not again… break."
After his vision distort for a moment, Shino found himself standing in the same place, but with a kunai against his neck.
The battlefield remained the same, but Kurenai was no longer in front of the duo. It was clear where she was.
"Not bad, Shino," Kurenai sensei's voice came from behind him.
Shino silently acquiescence and raised the scroll in his hands.
