Chapter 154: Chapter 154: Steady Advancement
On Yunshan Fleet's right side was the Meteor Fleet, a major force of the Northern War Zone and one of the four great fleets of the Northern Federation. Although its scale was slightly smaller than Yunshan Fleet's, it remained a formidable force. Before Feng Mo could continue examining the fleet formations, an alert rang out from Yunshan's bridge.
"Warning! Radar has detected a massive swarm of insectoid mother ships approaching. Scanning swarm size… Scan complete. T5-class mother ships: 940; T4-class mother ships: 4,600; T3-class… uncountable."
Feng Mo didn't need to hear the rest of the report. With T3, T2, and T1-class vessels counted as "uncountable," this truly was the sheer defensive might of the insectoid home system. It was terrifying. Sensing Feng Mo's reaction, Gu Jun's voice came through on the video feed, his tone a dry scoff:
"Xiao Mo, this is just the appetizer. According to the Federation's intelligence calculations, the insectoid species likely commands at least thirty thousand T5-class mother ships—over double the total T5-class starships in the Federation's entire fleet."
"Even though their mother ships are slow-moving and somewhat limited in attack and defense, their overwhelming numbers make it difficult for the Federation to hold its ground without paying a heavy price. That's why the insectoid species remains our number-one threat."
Hearing this, Feng Mo took a deep breath, his gaze fixed on the radar screen as the red dots rapidly multiplied from the initial hundreds to tens of thousands. And that was just the mother ships. The sheer numbers of other insectoid entities riding aboard those mother ships was beyond imagining. Some of these creatures, such as Corrosive Worms and Explosive Bugs, could even survive briefly in open space, making them deadly threats against Federation shields.
For a moment, Feng Mo was stunned by the scale of the oncoming swarm. Just days before, he had fought a fierce battle against a fleet of 4,000 insectoid mother ships, but this was on another level entirely. If he had been facing this with only the Storm Fleet, he couldn't fathom how he would handle it, other than by making a swift escape—though even that might not have worked against these numbers.
This operation was indeed eye-opening. Realizing he had been dealing only with small skirmishes until now, Feng Mo felt an urgency to advance his territories, to build his own T5-class fleet as quickly as possible. The need to secure a future for his people and fleet felt more pressing than ever.
"So, who's going in first?" Gu Jun asked the other twelve fleet commanders on the video channel. His tone was light, as though this were an outing rather than a battle.
Through Gu Jun's view, Feng Mo could see the faces of the other commanders. One of them bore a striking resemblance to Chu Yunjian's father, looking about five or six years his senior—likely another member of the prestigious Chu family from the Glorious Empire.
"Old Gu, is the Chu family's son-in-law here? Let's get him out here so Old Chu can finally get a look at his son-in-law," one of the commanders joked, laughter crackling over the video channel. Standing behind Feng Mo, Han Peipei gave him a sideways look, somewhat bemused.
Feng Mo, on the other hand, showed no hint of discomfort, nor did he respond. Although he was recognized here, he knew he hadn't yet reached the level of these veterans. At times like this, it was best to listen and observe.
"All right, enough of you old-timers and your jokes. Let's get serious. Let the Celestial Dawn Fleet lead the way," someone else suggested.
Feng Mo quickly switched to the external feed, just in time to see one of the thirteen T5 fleets moving forward to intercept the swarm.
A hundred escort ships formed a protective semi-circle in front of the main ships, creating a fortified line as ten T5-class missile carriers opened fire. Thousands of missiles streaked toward the insectoid fleet, their tails blazing through the dark as they flew over the protective line of escorts and impacted among the insectoid mother ships.
The explosions ripped through the swarm, igniting massive bursts of flame and light that tore into the insectoid ranks. Successive blasts swallowed whole sections of the enemy fleet, the force of each strike even obliterating the mother ships behind the initial targets. Feng Mo was transfixed by the sheer scale of destruction—a spectacle made possible by the coordinated fire of tens of thousands of missiles.
Previously, a thousand-missile volley from the Storm Fleet had seemed impressive. But here, the volley from a T5 missile carrier fleet was in a different league. This was truly something to behold.
Observing Feng Mo's awe, Gu Jun's voice rang out with a hint of a chuckle:
"Xiao Mo, that's just a T4-class missile carrier. Each one can fire a thousand T4-class missiles at once. Impressive, but fairly standard. The Federation only has five T5-class missile carriers, and Yunshan Fleet has one of them. Wait until you see what it can do."
At that moment, the initial volley had already slowed the insectoid swarm, causing a temporary pause as entire sections of mother ships were destroyed. Next came the turn of the carriers. Tens of thousands of blue unmanned combat drones and starfighters swarmed out, targeting the approaching insectoid mother ships.
The combined fire of their laser cannons and missiles created a vast web of firepower, pouring continuous waves of ordnance into the enemy swarm. Laser beams and missiles rained down on the insectoid vessels, sparking explosions that filled the vastness of space with a burning red glow.
Given the immense numbers of insectoid mother ships, targeting wasn't even necessary at this point—anything fired into the crowd would hit. However, Feng Mo knew that self-aiming systems were indeed active, locking onto high-value targets amid the swarm. For T5-class escort ships, activating their energy shields allowed them to withstand continuous fire from the T2- and T1-class insectoid mother ships, likely without even a dent to their shields.
Thus, only the missile carriers' initial barrage had been a saturation attack. The following waves of attacks would be more selective, specifically targeting high-level insectoid mother ships.
After each round of firing, the unmanned drones and starfighters returned to rearm and prepare for a second wave. These two rounds alone, Feng Mo estimated, had already eliminated tens of thousands of insectoid mother ships.
This was the reality of large-scale interstellar warfare. Feng Mo was both awed and sobered by the breathtaking display. There was only one word to describe this battle: spectacular.
However, while defensive fire and long-range bombardments were essential, an offensive push was needed to decisively break through.
One T5-class battleship and two T5-class destroyers formed a squadron, advancing toward the insectoid swarm with their shields activated.
They weren't there to charge blindly but were each assigned specific targets, all of them T5-class insectoid mother ships.
The T5-class plasma cannons on each ship began gathering energy, each one forming a brilliant orange sphere that eventually coalesced into a devastating orange beam that lanced through the insectoid ranks.
First, the two T5-class destroyers unleashed their main and auxiliary cannons to clear the area around their target T5-class insectoid mother ship, opening the way for the battleship's main plasma cannon to deliver the final blow.
With a precisely timed barrage, the three ships combined to
strike with devastating efficiency, obliterating the target.
