Star Wars: The War That Only the UNSC Can End

Chapter 34: The Factories

Darkness enveloped the desolate landscape of Lothal as a UNSC transport ship silently descended toward a designated point in a remote valley. Its engines barely murmured, designed to avoid detection on covert missions. On board, Noble Team sat in tense silence. Spartans checked their equipment, adjusted armor, and readied weapons with almost ritualistic precision. Every movement was deliberate, every click and snap of weapons loading echoing through the cockpit like an echo of preparation.

Carter, the team leader, checked the tactical map projected on his wrist. "We have a clear mission," he said, his voice firm and heavy with authority. "Locate, secure, and assess the complex. This is not a simple rescue or assault. We are talking about a key facility that can change the course of this war. If the factories are functional, this location will be vital to our future operations."

The AI Serina, projected on the HUD of their helmets, intervened, her tone calm but cutting. "Noble Team, the coordinates provided indicate a reinforced underground complex. This site not only produced advanced droids; it also housed experimental Confederate technology. Energy signatures are detected in the vicinity. There could be residual activity or autonomous defense systems. Exercise caution. We cannot allow this asset to be destroyed or compromised."

Kat, checking the sensor specifications, added, "If there are active defensive systems, they could include tactical droids or, worse, automated turrets. Separatist architecture is known for its efficiency in defense. We're going to be up against more than just a couple of rusty B1s."

Jorge, adjusting his heavy machine gun, let out a low growl. "Nothing we can't handle."

Carter looked at his team, his tone now more personal but no less professional. "This is a critical asset. We're not here for unnecessary heroics. We follow protocol, secure the area, and return with results. Understood?"

"Roger that," the team responded in unison.

As the ship descended, proximity sensors began to flash. "I'm detecting movement at ground level," Serina warned. "I can't confirm if it's hostiles or local wildlife. But I recommend being prepared for a possible encounter."

Noble Team prepared for deployment. Emile, adjusting his knife on his shoulder, smiled slightly. "Wildlife or not, if they get in the way, they're history."

As the ship landed softly on the rocky terrain, the hatches opened, letting in the dry, dust-laden air of Lothal. Noble Team filed out in formation, moving with tactical precision. Carter led, with Kat constantly analyzing sensor data, Jorge covering the flanks with his machine gun, and Emile alongside Noble 6 securing the blind spots.

"Perimeter clear," Emile reported after a quick sweep with his visor.

"Movement at twelve," Kat muttered. "Could be automated probes or defense systems that have just been activated."

Carter held up a hand to indicate silence. "We're proceeding cautiously. Hold your fire until you confirm the threat. We don't want to trigger a massive defense chain."

The team began to approach an entrance partially hidden by rocks and vegetation, with clear signs of having been designed to remain unnoticed. Just as Kat was about to hack the entrance's control panel, Serina warned, "Energy signature detected. Possible activation of defense systems."

Suddenly, blaster fire lit up the darkness, and a group of B2 droids emerged from the entrance. Their heavy fire forced the team to disperse.

"Hostile contact," Carter announced, as he responded with accurate shots from his rifle.

Jorge advanced, using his armor as mobile cover as he unloaded his machine gun on the droids. Emile threw a grenade that disintegrated several enemies, but more droids began to emerge from the shadows.

"They're well organized," Kat said as she looked for a point to hack into the systems. "I need time to disable their reinforcements."

B2 droids, larger and tougher than the usual B1s, began to emerge from the factory entrance. Their heavy blaster cannons spewed out continuous rounds, forcing the team to scatter and seek cover among the rocks. Jorge advanced to the front, his machine gun roaring as he fired bursts that tore apart the first enemies.

"Stay in formation! Kat, keep working that panel," Carter shouted as he took out a droid that got too close. "We won't let them outrun us."

The droids were not only numerous, but organized. A tactical droid appeared in the rear, issuing commands that coordinated enemy movements. Emile, noticing the pattern, activated his visor to look for a clear angle. With deadly precision, he fired a projectile that pierced the tactical droid's head, momentarily destabilizing the offensive.

"Nice shot, Emile," Noble 6 said, covering Jorge as another group of droids tried to flank them.

But it wasn't all B2s. From the sides of the valley, small spider droids armed with blasters began to scale the walls, firing from unexpected angles. One of them leapt towards Kat, who was immersed in panel hacking. With quick reflexes, Emile caught it in mid-air and smashed it against a rock with his knife.

"Careful, Kat! We can't let them take you out," Jorge growled as he fired at the spider droids still descending.

"I'm working as fast as I can," Kat replied, sweating under the pressure. "These systems are protected with advanced encryption. I need a couple more minutes."

"Two minutes is a long time in this hellhole," Emile muttered as he threw a grenade towards a group of B2s trying to surround them. The explosion shook the ground, sending metal fragments into the air.

Then a new problem arrived: automated turrets emerged from the ground, their twin cannons turning to focus on Noble Team. "Watch out for those turrets!" Jorge shouted, throwing himself to the ground as a burst of gunfire grazed past his back.

"Destroy those turrets," Carter ordered. "Kat, can you shut them off from the panel?"

"Not while I'm busy opening the door!" Kat replied.

Noble 6 and Emile took up positions to engage the turrets. They used plasma grenades from the fallen Covenant, sticking them to the metal bases. Each explosion lit up the valley, taking out one turret after another.

Jorge, meanwhile, acted as a mobile barrier. His armor absorbed enemy fire as he advanced on the B2s, crushing one with his bare hands and shooting another at point-blank range that tried to flank him.

"Kat, we need that door open now!" Carter roared as he fired at a spider droid that was dangerously approaching.

"One more minute!" Kat shouted, working frantically. "Cover my left!"

Noble 6 answered the call, taking out two droids that tried to flank Kat. However, more enemies kept coming. From the horizon, a droid armored vehicle appeared, firing shells that exploded near the team.

"We have to take that vehicle down!" Carter ordered.

Jorge, without hesitation, grabbed a rocket launcher he had picked up from a destroyed droid. He aimed and fired a shell straight at the droid tank, destroying it in a massive explosion.

"Door open!" Kat finally announced, quickly backing away as the doors to the complex opened with a metallic screech.

"In, now!" Carter ordered. Noble Team regrouped and charged into the factory, firing at the last droids that followed them.

Inside, the factory was a maze of assembly lines and heavy machinery. The remaining droids guarding the interior were quick to appear. The battle raged on, but with the skills of Noble Team, the defense systems were disabled one by one.

"Zone secured," Carter reported, his voice calm despite the intensity of the fight.

Kat activated the power systems, illuminating the vast facility. Assembly lines began to roar to life, robotic arms and conveyor belts moving as if they hadn't been idle for long. Monitors glowed, displaying detailed schematics of advanced battle droids, models significantly more sophisticated than Confederate standards.

"This isn't just a factory, it's a potential arsenal," Carter said, his eyes scanning the room. "With this capability, we could bolster our forces significantly. These facilities could sustain us in the war while we build up our strength."

Kat, still scanning the terminals, nodded gravely. "The systems here are not only intact, but optimized. The blueprints I'm looking at are for droids that could outperform the old Confederate models. But there's one problem: if the Senate or the Covenant find out about this, we'll be in a very dangerous position."

Carter crossed his arms, looking at the assembly lines that hummed softly as the systems rebooted. "So, we have to be strategic. This can't get out in the open. If we keep these operations secret, we could produce reinforcements without relying solely on human recruits."

Jorge, surveying the site with his machine gun resting on his shoulder, commented, "This could change the war, but it also puts a giant target on us. If the Covenant ever gets suspicious of this place, they'll send everything they have to destroy it."

Kat added, "It would be a mistake to underestimate the political impact of this. If the Republic finds out we're producing droids without their approval, it will be an immediate diplomatic conflict. We need a strategy to operate this in the shadows."

Carter turned to Kat. "How quickly can we mobilize these factories?"

Kat typed rapidly into the terminal, analyzing the data. "With the right resources, we could have lines up and running in a matter of weeks. But we'll require materials, technical personnel, and a strategy to move the products undetected. Additionally, security protocols will need to be in place. If the Covenant or any other faction tries to infiltrate here, we'll need active defensive systems."

Carter nodded thoughtfully. "So this isn't just an asset, it's a massive liability. Serina, can you come up with a logistical plan to move the necessary resources and secure this facility?"

The AI appeared in everyone's visors, its tone professional but with a warning undertone. "Of course, Commander. However, this operation will require precise coordination. There are high risks if anyone detects the movement of supplies into this region. I suggest diverting materials from less guarded points and reinforcing local defenses."

"This place may be our advantage, but we have to play our cards carefully," Carter said as he closed his helmet. "Kat, disable any external signals and leave the systems in autonomous mode for now. This will be our secret stronghold, and we cannot afford to lose it."

In the strategy room of the UNSC base on the moon of Naboo, the atmosphere was tense. Arnet, his face tired but determined, was surrounded by his top brass. In front of them, Serina projected a hologram of the Lothal facility. Assembly lines, defense systems, and transportation routes flickered in bright blue as the AI gave its analysis.

"Noble Team assures us that the facility is intact and operational," Serina reported in her usual, professional, cold tone. "The assembly lines have the capacity to produce advanced droids at a rate I had not anticipated. However, keeping this hidden from the Republic and Covenant will be extremely difficult."

Arnet, arms crossed, frowned. "What do we need to get this up and running without interruptions?"

"Resources and personnel," Serina continued. "We need technical reinforcements to run the factories, materials to maintain production, and transportation routes that don't attract attention. In addition, we'll need to tighten security at the facility. Any hint of unusual activity could attract both the Republic and the Covenant."

Jacob Keyes, looking serious, stepped in. "Admiral, this puts us in a difficult spot. If the Republic finds out about this, they'll accuse us of operating outside the terms of our alliance. They might even view it as a hostile act."

Arnet sighed, but his tone remained firm. "The Republic is no longer our priority. We've lost too many men, too many resources, and all for an alliance that has barely given us anything in return. If they want to join our fight, they'll do so on our terms, and if not, they can stay back. Serina, show me the resources we can mobilize immediately."

The AI changed the hologram, showing a detailed breakdown of the resources needed to activate the factories. "We have enough materials to run at least two full assembly lines. However, to maximize production capacity, we will need to access the reserves of our allies on Naboo, Alderaan, and Lothal. I also suggest using secondary trade routes that can camouflage our shipments as routine operations."

Captain Preston Cole spoke from the other end of the table. "This will give us an undeniable strategic advantage. But if this gets out, the Senate will condemn us. We need to anticipate their reaction."

Arnet stood up from his seat, staring at the hologram. "I don't care about the Senate. Let them talk, let them shout, let them accuse us of whatever they want. We have borne the brunt of this war while they play politics. I don't expect their support, and frankly, I don't need it. We will focus on our allies. Naboo, Alderaan, and now Lothal. The rest of the Republic can beg for help on their knees if they want anything from us."

Serina added, "As for droid designs, I'm already evaluating existing models to adapt them to our needs. I can develop a more advanced prototype, tailored to UNSC tactics. But we'll need time to implement it."

Arnet nodded. "Prioritize production. Prototypes can wait. We need functional units to reinforce our troops as soon as possible."

Kat, present at the meeting after her return from Lothal, chimed in. "Noble Team has secured the facility. But if we're going to keep this secret, we need to fortify those factories. The current defenses won't hold up against a direct Covenant attack."

Arnet looked at Serina. "Reinforce Lothal's defenses. Make it an impenetrable fortress. If the Covenant set foot there, I want it to be their tomb."

The meeting continued with the planning of logistical movements. Troops and resources began to move under a cloak of stealth, using camouflaged routes and strategic detours. The UNSC was not only consolidating their position, but also drawing a clear line: they were ready to fight alone, with or without the Republic.

Arnet left the strategy room, the weight of the decision still on his shoulders. He walked through the illuminated corridors of the base until he reached the module where Aayla Secura was reviewing a report on refugees who still needed medical attention. He found her standing, frowning, lost in thought.

"Aayla," Arnet said, his voice firm but calm, enough to get her attention without startling her.

The Jedi turned, her eyes reflecting a mix of tiredness and a little distrust. "Admiral. What is it?"

"We need to talk. Now," Arnet replied, gesturing toward a nearby room. Aayla followed him silently, intrigued by the seriousness in his tone.

When they entered, Arnet closed the door behind them. The room was empty, with only a table and a few chairs. Aayla crossed her arms, waiting for him to speak.

"I have made a decision that will change many things," Arnet began, bluntly. "The UNSC cannot continue to be saddled with an alliance that costs us more than it gives us. We are focusing on our allies: Naboo, Alderaan, Lothal. The Republic, and especially the Senate, have proven to be more of a hindrance than a support. I will not wait for them to change. We will do what is necessary to win this war, with or without them."

Aayla stared at him, trying to process his words. "And what does that mean, exactly? That they will ignore the Republic? That they will make decisions without consulting anyone else?"

"It means that I will not allow the political games of the Senate to put my people, my soldiers, or the civilians we are trying to protect at risk," Arnet replied harshly. "We have already sacrificed too much. I will not sacrifice more for a Republic that does not lift a finger while we fight for their planets."

Aayla stepped forward, her posture reflecting her discomfort. "Arnet, I understand your frustration. I've seen the flaws of the Republic. But acting this way could destroy what's left of this alliance. If you decide to do everything your way, how are you any different from those you're criticizing?"

Arnet looked at her, his face hardened. "How am I any different? I do what is necessary to protect lives. I don't have time for endless debates while the Covenant keeps moving forward. I don't have time for politics. If the Republic wants to stay afloat, it will have to adapt. Not the other way around."

Aayla pressed her lips together, visibly conflicted. "You're acting like there are no consequences. What if the Republic decides to see you as a threat? What if the Jedi consider you an enemy?"

"If that happens, it will be because they chose it, not me," Arnet replied firmly. "But I didn't bring you here to side with the Republic. I brought you here because you are a leader, Aayla. A voice that can make a difference. I want to know where you stand in all of this. Will you stand with us, or will you continue to wait for the Senate to do something useful?"

The Jedi looked at him with a mix of frustration and sadness. "I can't abandon the Council. My loyalty is with them. But… I also know that you are right about many things. The Republic is broken, and the Jedi… we are not what we used to be."

Arnet nodded, understanding her words. "I'm not asking you to give up your order. I'm asking you to see reality. We're doing what the others don't want to do. We're facing the Covenant with everything we've got. I need to know if I can count on you."

Aayla sighed, closing her eyes for a moment. Finally, she looked at him with determination. "I'm with you, Arnet. But don't expect me to become a tool for your plans. I'll help the UNSC because I believe it's the right thing to do. But I can't, and I don't want to, cut my ties with the Council."

"That's all I needed to hear," Arnet said, his tone softer now. "I don't care where you come from, Aayla. I care that you're here, now, when it matters most."

The Jedi nodded, though her doubts still weighed on her. As they walked out of the room, they both knew this was a turning point. For Aayla, it meant walking a dangerous line between her loyalty to the Council and her support for the UNSC. For Arnet, it was a sign that, although he was willing to bear the weight of his decisions, he was not completely alone.
