Chapter 429: We Need To Be One Step Ahead
"I think we should attack now."
"You do? Why?"
"Because the longer we wait, the more time they have to grow and prepare. And we don't have much time either.
Humans have gone through world changes before. They'll adjust faster than we expect. That's not good for us."
"True. But how would attacking help?"
"If we move now, we'll catch them off guard. We'll gain ground, learn their weaknesses, and hit them while they're still organizing."
"So, you think they don't know what's happening?"
"Exactly. And if we strike now, we've got the edge."
But what they didn't know… was that someone had already spotted them. Someone who was quietly watching their every move—without them having a clue.
Far away, in a special tower inside the Xu family's subspace, Lin Yue stood in front of a large water basin used for spiritual readings. Her long black hair was tied loosely, and she wore a deep indigo robe with light silver threads.
The surface of the water shimmered, showing vague images—flashes of beasts, a giant turtle drifting through the sea, and shadowy figures deep in conversation. Her silver eyes didn't blink as she focused, calmly observing everything.
She didn't hear the exact words, but the flow of energy and movement patterns was enough. She could tell something was going on.
A few feet away, An Zhihao was lying on a cushion, snacking on dried mango slices and tossing them in the air before catching them with her mouth. She was humming a tune and watching Lin Yue work with mild curiosity.
"So?" An Zhihao finally asked, sitting up and stretching her arms above her head. "Anything fun?"
"It's not fun," Lin Yue replied plainly. "But it's definitely important. I think the beasts are planning something bigger. The psychic beast is involved again."
An Zhihao sat up a little straighter. "Ugh, that weirdo. What's it doing now?"
"Using that turtle as a moving base," Lin Yue said, already scribbling details into a jade slip.
"It's staying hidden while the top beasts talk about adjusting their plans. They're going to stop rushing cities and start targeting resource spots."
"Smart move… annoying, but smart," An Zhihao muttered.
"They're getting more organized," Lin Yue continued, her voice steady. "They've realized that humans are reacting faster than they thought. So now they're changing direction. Slow us down by hitting our growth points."
An Zhihao stood up and stretched again. "Alright then. You done writing?"
"Almost," Lin Yue replied, copying the contents onto another jade slip. "I'm going to give one to Qianghua, and we'll need to send a few copies to the Empyrean Harmony Sect, Empyrean Trade Consortium, and the Xuzhong Empire's higher-ups."
"Want me to tag along?"
"Yes. He'll need both of us to figure out what to do next."
"Cool. Let's go." An Zhihao grabbed her pouch and followed Lin Yue out of the tower.
The walk back to the main courtyard wasn't long, but the subspace was more active than usual. Patrol teams were checking formation boundaries, maid teams were bringing in new resource reports, and some Xu family disciples were training out in the open square.
An Zhihao glanced around as they passed. "Everyone's already on edge. They probably feel something's off even if they don't know the details."
"They're not wrong," Lin Yue said softly. "And we need to keep it that way. Alert, but not panicked."
When they reached the main meeting hall, a maid opened the doors, recognizing them immediately. "The Patriarch is inside."
Xu Qianghua was sitting at the long wooden table, going over some new reports from the outer zones. He looked up the moment they walked in.
"Did something happen?" he asked, setting the report down.
Lin Yue walked up and placed the jade slip in front of him. "You'll want to read this first."
Xu Qianghua activated it. His brows furrowed slightly as he went through the details, but he didn't interrupt.
An Zhihao waited until he was done, then added, "They're going after our resources now. No more charging the cities blindly. They're trying to slow us down."
"They're evolving," Lin Yue said. "And not just physically. Their plans are starting to show real structure."
"They're being led," Xu Qianghua muttered as he set the jade slip down. "That psychic beast is back again, isn't it?"
"Yes," Lin Yue replied. "And it's using the turtle as cover. They're staying on the move, staying hidden, while sending out waves to test us."
An Zhihao crossed her arms and tilted her head. "It's not a full war yet. More like they're poking us to see where we hurt the most."
Xu Qianghua leaned back in his chair, thinking for a moment. "If they're shifting focus to spirit veins and mining zones, then we need to reposition our guards.
The cities can hold for now, but our growth areas can't be left unprotected."
"I agree," Lin Yue said. "We've already marked the high-priority areas. I'll send updated maps to the outer teams."
"I can prep a few trap zones, too," An Zhihao added. "We let them think they've found something easy to take, and we bury them."
"Good. Do it," Xu Qianghua nodded. "And let's keep this quiet for now. I don't want panic to spread among the smaller sects or clans. Not yet."
Lin Yue passed him another jade slip. "I've made extra copies of the report. One each for the Empyrean Harmony Sect, Empyrean Trade Consortium, and the Xuzhong Empire. I'll send them out through our Shadows."
Xu Qianghua gave a small smile. "You're always ahead."
"I try to be," she said simply.
"Same here, but with more flair," An Zhihao said, grinning.
Xu Qianghua laughed lightly. "Flair or not, we need results."
Lin Yue looked at him and added, "There's one more thing. I'm not sure how, but I think the psychic beast has a faint sense that someone's watching.
I could feel some resistance during the reading. Like it was trying to block me."
Xu Qianghua's expression turned serious again. "Do you think it knows we're monitoring them?"
"Maybe not fully," Lin Yue replied. "But it knows someone is. So we need to be extra careful with how often and how deep we read."
