Chapter 14: Chapter Fourteen: Tingling Doubt

"Wow, what just happened… did Harry just shove his best friend down?" Jason asked in shock, his eyes wide as he looked between Harry and Freddie, who was still on the ground in pain. The confusion in the gym was thick, but Miles shook his head, sensing something deeper had just unfolded.

"I don't think that's exactly what happened," Miles replied, his voice lower as he tried to make sense of it himself. "I think he was trying to do that to me. I don't know, but my body just… reacted on its own. So fast. I moved out of the way, and Harry couldn't stop himself, so he hit Freddie instead, I didn't see him coming because he was behind me" Miles spoke quietly, unsure of his own words. It was all a blur, and even though Jason hadn't noticed the quick dodge, Miles was certain that's what had happened.

Jason, still in shock, raised an eyebrow. "Is that what happened? Harry's crazy… he really wanted to hurt you that bad?"

Miles frowned. "That's not even my biggest worry right now. I'm more concerned about how I moved that fast, how I avoided it. It's like my body reacted on its own, and I didn't even think about it. I just… moved. I keep getting this tingling feeling whenever something's about to hit me."

Jason laughed, shaking his head in disbelief. "Oh really? So what, you've got superpowers now?" he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Come on, man, snap out of it. You just got lucky." He gave Miles a playful shove, trying to lighten the mood.

But Miles wasn't laughing. He knew this wasn't luck. The way he moved, the way his senses sharpened in that split second—it was too precise, too fast to be coincidence. His instincts were telling him something was off, even if he couldn't explain it just yet.

"I know what I felt, Jason," Miles said firmly, looking his friend dead in the eye. "It wasn't luck. Tomorrow, I'll show you. We'll test it, and I'll prove it to you."

Jason chuckled, still unconvinced but amused by Miles' seriousness. "Alright, alright, if you say so. Tomorrow then. We'll see just how 'super' you are." He slapped Miles on the back before walking away, still laughing.

Miles, though, couldn't shake the feeling. Something inside him had changed, and while he didn't know what it was, he was determined to find out.

Miles mind remained puzzled he didn't know what was wrong with him he went home still thinking about the change in his body.

The next day, Miles was up early, more determined than ever to figure out what was happening to him. He couldn't shake the weird sensations, the heightened reflexes, and the fact that his body seemed to react faster than his mind. Jason was the only one who might take him seriously, though even he didn't believe much of what Miles had been saying. Still, Miles needed to know for sure, so they agreed to meet up at his place.

They both walked over to an empty space near the back of the block. It was quiet and perfect for their little experiment. The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows, but Miles felt a nervous energy coursing through him. He was ready to put his strange abilities to the test.

Jason leaned against a brick wall, arms crossed, clearly amused. "Are you really sure about this, man?" Jason asked, his voice dripping with skepticism. "I mean, come on, you're going to hurt yourself trying to prove... nothing."

Miles paced back and forth, running a hand through his hair. "I know what I'm saying , Jason. Something's changed with me. I can feel it. The other day, I ran to school without even breaking a sweat. Like, I didn't get tired at all."

Jason raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. "Dude, so what? You ran to school. Big deal. I've seen you run before. What's that got to do with anything?"

Miles stopped in his tracks, turning to face his friend. "No, you don't get it, man. It wasn't normal. I didn't feel tired or winded like I should've. I felt... I don't know, like I had unlimited energy. And yesterday at practice, when Harry tried to hit me—I moved out of the way without thinking. My body reacted faster than I could even process."

Jason shook his head, clearly trying not to laugh. "So what? Now you think you've got superpowers? What's next, you're going to start flying?"

Miles ignored the sarcasm, too focused on proving his point. "Look, I just need to test it, okay? I need to know if it's real."

He handed Jason a bottle of water. Jason looked at the bottle, then at Miles, smirking. "You want me to hit you with this?"

"Yeah," Miles replied, taking a step back. "Throw it at my head. I'm serious."

Jason chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief. "Oh, man, this is going to be hilarious. Are you sure you want me to throw this? I might not hold back."

Miles nodded, his expression deadly serious. "Just throw it, and I'll show you. I'll dodge it before it hits me."

Jason shrugged, still grinning. He took a few steps back to give them both some space. Miles stood a few feet away, his eyes locked on Jason then turned his back. His muscles tensed as he tried to focus, waiting for the tingling sensation that had saved him before. He knew it was coming. He just had to feel it.

"Alright, man," Jason said, winding up his arm like a pitcher about to throw a fastball. Without warning, he launched the bottle straight at Miles' head with a quick snap of his wrist.

Before Miles could even react, the bottle smacked him square at the back of his head with a dull thud. "Ouch!" Miles shouted, rubbing his head. "Come on, man, I wasn't ready!"

Jason doubled over in laughter, tears forming in his eyes. "Bro, I thought you said you'd feel it coming and dodge it! What happened to your 'super reflexes,' huh?" He could barely speak through his fits of laughter, clearly finding the whole thing hilarious.

Miles grumbled, still rubbing his sore head. "I wasn't ready, okay? Let's try it again. This time I'll focus."

Jason straightened up, still chuckling. "If you say so, man. But seriously, you're going to get a concussion trying to prove this." He grabbed the bottle again, shaking his head in disbelief.

Miles, still rubbing his back head, took a deep breath. He wasn't about to give up just because of one failed attempt. He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to calm his mind and focus. "Alright, let's do it again."

"Ready?" Jason asked, standing in position.

"Yes, I'm ready this time," Miles said, planting his feet firmly on the ground. He bent his knees slightly, trying to prepare for the moment he would need to dodge. He was determined to feel that strange sensation again.

Jason took aim, winding up the bottle, and with another quick flick of his wrist, he sent it hurtling toward Miles' head for the second time. This time, Miles tried to concentrate on the feeling, the anticipation of the impact—but once again, the bottle connected with his back head, making a loud thud.

"Ugh! Are you serious?" Miles groaned, rubbing the sore spot. Jason burst out laughing even harder than before, practically doubled over as he tried to catch his breath.

"Dude, give it up! You don't have superpowers!" Jason laughed, wiping away the tears from his eyes. "You're just going to keep getting smacked in the head at this rate!"

Miles stood there, frustrated but refusing to give up. He knew something was different—he just couldn't control it yet. "One more try," he muttered, though more to himself than to Jason.

Jason, still giggling, waved his hand dismissively. "Bro, I think you've had enough for today. Don't hurt yourself trying to be a superhero."

Miles sighed, feeling a bit defeated. But deep down, he knew this wasn't over. He hadn't imagined the things happening to him. Maybe he just needed more time to figure it all out.

Maybe I have to be in a real danger he said to Jason, lets get something that could actually hurt me

"Come on, bro. I'm not doing that," Jason said, shaking his head firmly as he crossed his arms. "Forget it. You can't be serious, man. You don't have super abilities. It was just luck, nothing else. Snap out of this."

Miles stood there, undeterred by Jason's reluctance. He was sure now—something had changed in him, and he needed to test his limits. Jason's disbelief wasn't enough to shake his own conviction. Without saying a word, Miles bent down, picked up a small but solid rock from the ground, and held it out toward Jason.

"Don't worry, I'll be fine," Miles insisted, pressing the rock into Jason's hand. "Just hit me. I'm serious."

Jason stared down at the rock, his eyes wide with disbelief. "What? No way, man! I'm not hitting you with a rock!" He tossed the rock back toward Miles, shaking his head again. "You've officially lost it, Miles. If you want to prove something, get someone else to do it. I'm not going to be responsible for giving you a concussion or worse."

Miles sighed, frustrated. "Jason, I know how this sounds, but you have to trust me. I've been feeling something, like my body's reacting faster than my brain. I know it sounds crazy, but I've already dodged some dangerous stuff. Just throw the rock at me, and I'll prove it to you."

Jason looked at Miles like he'd lost his mind. "Dude, this isn't a comic book. If I throw this rock and it hits you, you're going to the hospital. I'm not gonna be that guy."

"Jason," Miles pressed, stepping closer. "This is the only way I can show you. It's not luck—it's something else. I've felt it more than once. Just trust me."

Jason let out a long sigh, clearly conflicted. He ran a hand through his hair and glanced around, as if looking for a way out of the situation. "Look, man, I get that you're feeling weird stuff, but there's a difference between dodging a basketball and dodging a rock. What if you're wrong, huh? What if it doesn't work? What if you don't dodge?"

"I won't be wrong," Miles said with certainty, his voice calm but firm. "Just trust me. I need to figure this out."

Jason shook his head again, looking at the rock in his hand, then at Miles. "Man, I wont do it let just go okay ."

"Please, Jason. I'm telling you, nothing's going to happen. Just throw it."

"See you later man", Jason said walking away.
