Chapter 22: Like a Kid at A Candy Store
After Mile's encounter with the Oni guys, the rest of the week went by without a single appearance from them.
It seemed that Spider-Man had scared them back into hiding. Miles would have to find out where they're hiding soon before things get crazy. The weapons they were stealing from Kingpin could start a war in New York.
But for now, Miles had other plans. The weekend had just started and he and Genki had left the dorms and were heading to Aunt May's.
"You didn't really tell me why we're in Queens, Miles," Genki said as he and Miles walked through the suburban side of Queens.
"We're meeting up with a friend of mine," Miles said, looking at his phone. Most specifically, the news.
Something he had recently begun doing was refreshing the news app to see if there was anywhere Spider-Man was needed. Sure it wasn't the best way to do it but he needed to keep an eye on the city. 'If only there were a way for me to get updates on this stuff.' The lightbulb on top of Miles' head lit up as he turned to look at Genki. "Yo, man. You wouldn't happen to have any experience creating apps, would you?"
Genki snorted, "Come on dude, that's coding 101. Of course, I can make an app. The question is, what do you need one for?"
"I want to make a Spider-Man app. You know, one where people can send requests for my help." Miles remembered how nifty the app was when he played Spider-Man 2. If he could get an app similar to that one made, it would make his work as Spider-Man easier.
"Yeah, that could be nice. But I feel like most people would just want to troll you."
"Well, that's why I would have you be a moderator on there," Miles said, patting Genki's shoulder. "It doesn't have to be now but it could be something we can do in the future. For now, we should focus on our base of operations."
The two walked for a few more blocks before stopping in front of a house. There were still pictures of Spider-Man on the porch and a fresh bouquet of flowers had been placed beside the picture.
Seeing the vigil, Genki turned to Miles with a raised brow. He pointed at it with his thumb and asked, "Wait, isn't this the old Spider-Man's place?"
"You'd be right," Miles smirked, shooting a web at the doorbell.
The door opened up and Aunt May saw the two standing by the street.
"Buenos dias, Aunt May." Miles waved at her.
Crossing her arms, she looked at Miles with a smirk. "It hasn't even been a week since you last came by. You even brought a friend with you this time."
"Hello, my name is Genki Lee." Genki introduced himself with a short bow.
"I'm May Parker. It's nice to meet you, son. Why don't you two come in? I'm sure you have something you want to talk to me about." Aunt May said before going back inside
"Yo, does she know you're Spider-Man?" Genki whispered as the two walked into her house.
"Oh yeah. She was the first person I talked to when I got my powers. Aunt May's been helping me ever since."
"That's pretty cool!"
After a few minutes, Miles and Genki were sitting in the living room along with Aunt May. She was drinking some tea as she turned to look at Miles. "I'm assuming since you brought him along, that means he knows about your secret?"
Miles nodded, pointing at Genki. "Genki here is my roommate back at Visions Academy. He kinda found out about me being Spider-Man and now he wants to help me."
"Is that so?" Aunt May hummed, placing her tea on the coaster on top of the coffee table. "That's very admirable, kid. But you should leave this superhero stuff to people like Miles. Wouldn't want you getting hurt out there."
Genki shook his head, "Oh, I wouldn't dare go out there and fight crime. I just think that I could assist Miles from behind the scenes. I'm currently working on getting some sort of communications online and I wanted to see if I could add some sort of cameras to Miles' lenses to record footage and stream it to my laptop."
Aunt May nodded, turning back to Miles. "I see why you came here."
"I just wanted to ask if it was okay with you if we used some of Peter's stuff."
"Please, Miles. Think of that place as if it was yours. If you need something from there, then by all means, go ahead. Lord knows I can't use any of it."
Miles smiled, "Thanks for giving us permission."
"Right then, let's head on over to the shed." Aunt May said, getting up from her couch and walking toward the back of the house.
Out in her backyard, Genki looked at the small shed and then back at Miles. "What's in the shed?"
"Spider-Man's hideout."
"Really? It doesn't look that big."
"It's a lot bigger on the inside." Aunt May said, removing the lock from the shed. The door opened revealing the elevator.
"Woah, I didn't expect that," Genki said, stepping inside as Miles and Aunt May followed behind him.
The elevator began to descend and Miles saw as Genki's eyes almost bulged out of his eyes.
"Holy crap!" he exclaimed, running all over the place. He was practically foaming at the mouth, that was how excited he was.
Miles sighed before calling out to him. "Chill out dude, the stuff's not going anywhere."
"Sorry!" Genki apologized but continued to geek over everything that was in there.
"He's like a kid in a candy store." Aunt May commented with a smile. She then took a moment to lean in closer to Miles. "Listen, Miles, are you sure that you want to have this boy be a part of your world? Now, I'm not telling you not to be friends with him, but you and I both know that this isn't the safest job in the world."
"I-" Miles couldn't finish his sentence as he closed his mouth. What she was saying had some truth to it. It was for that reason that most Spider-People worked alone.
Worst case scenario, something terrible happens to Genki while Miles is out doing work as Spider-Man.
'But Miles and Genki? For some reason that duo always worked out in every piece of work that the two appeared in.' Miles thought to himself, but he threw that idea away. 'I need to stop relying so much on the comics.'
While it was easier for Miles to believe that he was in a comic book movie, that simply wasn't the case anymore. It wasn't a comic book that already had the story written to the end. Or a movie that has run to the credits.
This was real life and anything he did had consequences.
'Have I been going about this the wrong way?'
To be fair, he had been thrown into this world without warning with the only thing in his arsenal being Miles' body. The only reason he had become Spider-Man was out of a need, not a want.
Everything he was doing was to keep balance in the world as without Spider-Man, the city would go down the gutter. But if he was being honest, Miles never felt like he truly belonged in this world.
'I need to stop thinking like this. Even though I'm not from this world and I have no connection to it, it's the world I'm in now and I gotta accept that fact.'
All of a sudden Miles felt a pounding headache. He groaned as he held onto his head. "Argh..."
"Miles?" Aunt May placed a hand on Miles' shoulder. "Are you alright?"
"Y-yeah. I'm fine. Just got a migraine or something." Miles sighed, "I haven't gotten much sleep in a while."
"If you want you can go take a nap upstairs. I'll stay here and babysit your friend."
"Thanks, Aunt May. I'll be back soon," Miles said, going back on the elevator.
Genki walked back to Aunt May as he looked up at Miles who was going up the elevator. "What happened to Miles?"
"I think he's just tired." Aunt May said, turning to look at Genki. "Now, I'm positive Peter had exactly what you were looking for. Why don't you follow me and we go and check it out."
"Sure thing." Genki nodded, following behind Aunt May.
'I hope you know what you're doing Miles.' Aunt May thought as she led Genki deeper into the basement.
