Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Bamboozled Bai Shuang
"You're crazy?"
Bai Shuang stared at Han Zhen like she was looking at a lunatic.
"Didn't you see the recommended number of participants? Six to eight people, at least two teams working together to complete it."
"I know."
"You know? You know and still picked this mission, you—"
Before Bai Shuang could finish, she saw Han Zhen already press the "Confirm" button on the electronic screen.
After the confirm button was pressed, the system automatically displayed a message indicating the mission was successfully accepted.
The original "Available" status bar changed to "Accepted."
"You're truly insane. If the mission is abandoned or failed, it deducts ten percent of the reward points as a penalty. And you just accepted it like that?"
"Let's go. If something goes wrong, I'll take responsibility."
Han Zhen didn't bother explaining further. After confirming the mission location at the sewer entrance, he got up and headed outside.
Bai Shuang hesitated for a moment but eventually gritted her teeth and followed.
"The life signal was detected the day before yesterday."
"Upon discovery, the Guardians immediately recorded it, and the threat level was rated as Level 2."
Threat levels are assessments of insect invasions. When the threat level is 1 to 3, missions are released as point tasks for Guardian teams.
If the threat level exceeds 3, it's classified as a swarm disaster, requiring emergency reinforcements from combat Spirit Contract Masters in major war zones.
If the threat level surpasses 6, it's a true insect disaster. Every insect disaster is catastrophic, requiring legion-level Spirit Contract Master forces to resist. But even so, the damage is bound to be heavy.
A threat level of 2 meant that the sewer-inhabiting insects wouldn't exceed the second tier.
Not exceeding the second tier?
What's there to worry about?
If such bold words came from someone else, they'd surely be ridiculed mercilessly.
But this was Han Zhen.
In a single combat assessment, he killed over a dozen second-tier insect species.
Unfortunately, Bai Shuang didn't know that.
Not everyone watches television. At that time, Bai Shuang was probably just returning from the night dance hall and, like today, catching up on sleep.
So when Bai Shuang saw Han Zhen and Xia Youwei jump straight into the sewer through a manhole cover without any life-support measures, she couldn't help but vigorously rub her head.
"I must be crazy. I actually followed these two—these two lunatics—down here."
Grumbling, Bai Shuang also jumped through the manhole cover after them.
———
"Captain, the mission to clear the sewer insects has been taken." At this moment, another Guardian team in Azure City stared at the screen in shock.
The "Accepted" status bar displayed in large characters on the screen left them dumbfounded.
"Who stole our mission?"
"Impossible! Besides us, Teams 0002 and 0018, who else in Azure City has the strength to take this mission?"
The man addressed as captain frowned at the screen in disbelief.
"Could it be Team 0018 trying to hog the mission? After all, it's worth 300 points. If completed, that's at least two months' worth of—"
"Impossible. If it were just their team, completing this mission alone would be tough. Besides, their captain just confirmed cooperation with us."
Sure enough, just as he finished speaking, Team 0018's captain called.
"Old Xiao, someone snatched our mission?"
"When did Deep Blue City have someone like this?"
"Let's go to the mission's sewer entrance and see which team it is."
"Right, let's go!"
Bai Shuang had just entered the sewer. The pungent stench made her sneeze several times in a row.
She saw Han Zhen and Xia Youwei not far ahead.
"Be careful. The life detector identified at least eight second-tier insects here. This is probably their nest! We should move slo—"
SWOOSH!
Before Bai Shuang could finish, Xia Youwei had already transformed into her Fuxi Guqin form, and Han Zhen activated his Kai Ji power. His entire body was shrouded in a faint white aura.
With a sudden push of his foot, Han Zhen turned into a black thunderbolt, merging into the darkness of the sewer.
Bai Shuang: "…"
Han Zhen and Xia Youwei moved so fast that she couldn't even react.
At this rate, she might not even make it in time to collect their bodies.
"Truly reckless. Those are second-tier insects. Even one is tough to handle. I was too naive, thinking these two could pull off something miraculous. Turns out they're just brutes."
Bai Shuang had just sighed.
Then she heard a sharp, shattering guqin sound from the dark sewer ahead.
The melody seemed to tear through the darkness, and the sewer filled with the painful, frenzied howls of insects, one after another.
This chaos lasted less than thirty seconds.
Thirty seconds later, Han Zhen and Xia Youwei reappeared before Bai Shuang.
Not only were they unharmed, but even their hair remained perfectly intact.
"You… you two…" Bai Shuang stammered, her voice trembling. "Done?"
She asked tentatively.
She'd rather believe they were putting on an act to fool her than accept that these two had wiped out eight second-tier insects in just thirty seconds.
'Am I on a mission while you're racing?'
It was too surreal, so surreal Bai Shuang thought she was dreaming.
So she slapped herself twice.
'It hurts. Not a dream.'
"Yeah, we're done. Why're you standing there? Go collect the valuable materials from those insects' corpses. They might fetch a good price."
"Once you're done with the materials, hand in the mission. Also, we found a Guardian's corpse deeper in the sewer. That must be the missing Guardian. Submit that mission too."
"We're off."
After giving instructions, Han Zhen patted Bai Shuang's shoulder and left the sewer with Xia Youwei.
Leaving behind Bai Shuang, who still hadn't processed everything.
Only when the stench of blood began to permeate the tunnel did Bai Shuang shiver and snap out of it.
Half an hour later, when the members of Teams 0002 and 0018 arrived, the stench of blood from the manhole was overwhelming.
They entered the sewer, only to find numerous insect corpses scattered throughout the dim tunnels, each one gruesomely killed.
"All dead?"
"A total of ten second-tier insects, two more than the known information, all dead."
"Checked already. Every kill was a one-shot."
"Captain, the mission to clear the insects just updated to 'Completed!'"
The two captains exchanged glances, their pupils shrinking in shock.
Whoever completed this mission—what kind of monster were they?
