Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Innate Martial Spirit, Ontology Sect
After signaling Xiao Yan to close the door, Wang Yan went directly to his desk, sitting down and speaking frankly, "Xiao Yan, I've heard about your incident with Teacher Zhou. I'm very curious—what exactly is your martial spirit? How were you able to hold your ground against her with a soul power level under twenty?"
"My martial spirit?" Xiao Yan responded without hesitation. A pristine white first soul ring rose from beneath him, and his eyes took on a faint golden hue as he said, "My martial spirit is the Spirit Eye, with a mental attribute."
"What did you say? Spirit Eye, mental attribute, and it's an innate martial spirit?" Wang Yan looked stunned, his eyes lighting up with excitement as he nearly jumped out of his chair. "Are you from the Ontology Sect?"
"Ontology Sect? I've never heard of it," Xiao Yan replied, shaking his head, a slight hint of confusion in his expression.
"Why is your soul ring white?" Despite his initial joy, Wang Yan couldn't help but notice the white soul ring encircling Xiao Yan's waist. Gripping Xiao Yan's shoulders with a hint of regret, he lamented, "Your first soul ring is only ten years? This is such a waste! If you'd come to the academy earlier, I would have done everything in my power to secure a higher-grade soul ring for you."
After a moment of contemplation, Wang Yan closed his eyes briefly, then asked, "With a ten-year soul ring, theoretically, you shouldn't have been able to last as long as you did against Teacher Zhou. Can you tell me what your first soul skill is?"
It was typical for teachers to inquire about a student's martial spirit, but soul skills were a soul master's most vital secret. Wang Yan's tone showed he understood this boundary. Tian Meng Bing Can had warned Xiao Yan not to reveal the secret that his first soul ring held four soul skills, advising him to mention only one if asked.
"My first soul skill is Mental Detection Sharing," Xiao Yan said. Instead of directly answering Wang Yan, he activated Mental Detection and Sharing, a faint golden light glimmering in his eyes as he released a mental wave that widened Wang Yan's pupils in astonishment.
Through Xiao Yan's vision, everything seemed to slow down for Wang Yan, becoming sharp, orderly, and almost capable of being described with precision data. It felt as if he'd gained a second brain, processing everything with stunning clarity as the view shifted with his gaze.
"What… what skill is this?" Wang Yan stammered, his mouth agape.
Having been forewarned by Tian Meng Bing Can, Xiao Yan had no intention of disclosing too much. He briefly explained, "Teacher Wang, this skill is called Mental Detection Sharing. You must have felt the range—it currently covers a diameter of about seventy to eighty meters. I believe that as my soul power increases, so will its reach."
"By the way, what is this Ontology Sect you mentioned?"
Wang Yan, momentarily dumbfounded, collected himself and responded, "Ontology Sect… I'll explain that to you in more detail later." He gazed at Xiao Yan in amazement, exclaiming, "What kind of soul beast gave you a soul ring with such an extraordinary effect?"
"A ten-year Wind Baboon," Xiao Yan replied casually, scratching his nose. "I was lucky enough to kill it in the Star Dou Forest and absorb its soul ring. Senior Bei Bei and Sister Tang Ya can vouch for me."
"What? Your first soul ring came from a ten-year Wind Baboon? That's hard to wrap my head around. Our continent's study of martial spirits spans millennia, yet I've never read about anything like this in the books," Wang Yan murmured, furrowing his brow in confusion. "Could it be a mutated skill?"
"Your martial spirit is an innate one, and it has mental attributes, so it's inherently unique. Plus, you've fused it with a wind-type soul ring, which might have led to this skill mutation," Wang Yan reasoned analytically.
"Maybe," Xiao Yan replied, pretending to ponder the thought. "But, Teacher Wang, you mentioned something about the Ontology Sect?"
"Ontology Sect? It's a highly secretive sect on the continent," Wang Yan explained, furrowing his brow. "It's one of the Three Great Powers of the continent, alongside Shrek Academy and the Sun Moon Empire's Mingde Hall. Members of this sect possess rare innate martial spirits like your Spirit Eye. Innate martial spirits are essentially part of their own bodies. It's said that they can undergo a second awakening, making their martial spirits evolve and drastically increase in power."
Wang Yan paused, then added, "Your skill is exceptional; it might work well with a unique soul device the academy is currently developing."
"Innate martial spirit? Second awakening?" Xiao Yan mused, about to ask more about the Ontology Sect, but Wang Yan held up a hand.
"Xiao Yan, follow me; I'm taking you somewhere," Wang Yan said, swiftly rising and leading the way out of the office.
Xiao Yan, though momentarily puzzled by Wang Yan's intense reaction, sensed no malice. With Yao Lao by his side, he felt secure and followed without hesitation.
Exiting the freshmen's teaching building, Wang Yan led Xiao Yan to the back of the academy, entering the Soul Tool Department of the outer courtyard.
Ahead of them rose a massive gray building, with a robust structure hinting at its hybrid brick and metal composition. The building resonated with loud mechanical sounds, causing slight tremors in the ground.
"What is this place?" Xiao Yan asked, curious.
"This is the Soul Tool Experimental Zone in the Soul Tool Department. Come on; let's go in," Wang Yan replied, guiding Xiao Yan into the building.
Inside, Xiao Yan noticed the metallic interior, the likes of which he had never seen before. The metal had a dark brown hue, with a long corridor leading to a massive iron door at the end.
When they reached the end, Wang Yan took out a silver hexagonal token and pressed it against the door.
The door split open with a loud rumbling sound, and with that, Wang Yan patted Xiao Yan's shoulder. "This is where the academy researches and tests soul tools."
Inside, the vibrations of intense energy blended with turbulent air currents, making Xiao Yan's clothes billow. The area was vast, divided into different sections by thick metal partitions. Around them, people tinkered with various strange devices.
"Fan Yu, are you here? It's Wang Yan—I need to discuss something with you," Wang Yan called out confidently, his voice echoing across the room.
Hearing him, a tall, muscular ma
n in the crowd furrowed his brow before striding toward them.
