Chapter 3: Chapter 3: The Master
"Master, how is it going? Are there any children in our village who can become soul masters this year?" Old Jack asked anxiously.
"Well, there are two of them. And both are born with innate full soul power!" Su Yuntao replied.
"Innate full soul power?" Old Jack's eyes lit up with excitement.
"One is born with a full tenth level of soul power, and the other is born with a full twentieth level of soul power," Su Yuntao added.
"But, what a pity. One of them has a martial soul of Blue Silver Grass, and the other has a Wild Flower. Do you understand?" Su Yuntao said regretfully.
"Blue Silver Grass... Wild Flower... Innate full soul power... Master, with Blue Silver Grass and Wild Flower, is there no way for them to cultivate?" Old Jack asked, unwilling to accept the answer.
"It's not that they can't practice at all. But what do you think Blue Silver Grass and Wild Flower can evolve into as their martial souls improve?" Su Yuntao said flatly, glancing at Ye Feng and Tang San, who had already walked out of the hall. He sighed, "A waste martial soul is a waste martial soul, after all. It's a pity that these two kids have innate full-soul power. Well, I have to go to other villages to help children awaken their martial souls."
After Su Yuntao finished speaking, he turned and left, leaving Old Jack deeply troubled.
"Grandpa Jack, what is a soul ring? How can I get one?" Tang San walked up to Old Jack and asked.
"I don't know much about soul rings. To obtain one, it seems you have to hunt spirit beasts. That's something only a soul master can do," Old Jack replied. He paused, looked at Tang San, and asked, "Xiao San, you wouldn't happen to be the child with innate full soul power that the master mentioned, would you?"
"I'm only at the tenth level of innate soul power, but Ye Feng is at the twentieth level," Tang San said, glancing at Ye Feng, who was walking slowly behind him. There was a hint of envy in his tone.
Tang San couldn't help but think about the mysterious heaven technique of the Tang sect, which he had practiced diligently for years. Despite his efforts, his soul power was still ten levels lower than Ye Feng's. He couldn't even catch up!
"Ye Feng, is your innate soul power level 20?" Old Jack asked, looking at Ye Feng with less shock than he had shown with Tang San.
"Yes," Ye Feng replied.
"Show me your martial soul," Old Jack requested.
Ye Feng obliged, extending his right hand. A jade-like Wild Flower appeared in his palm.
"As expected, it looks very similar to hers, but the color is different," Old Jack murmured to himself.
"Similar to who?" Ye Feng raised an eyebrow, curious.
A soul master's martial soul is inherited from their parents. Most people inherit the martial soul of one parent, though some may awaken the martial soul of a grandparent or even further back in their lineage.
Ye Feng had been an orphan since childhood. There was an unmarked grave in the village, and Old Jack had told Ye Feng that his parents were buried there. No matter how much Ye Feng asked, Old Jack never revealed anything more about his parents. The villagers only knew that Old Jack had returned from outside the village one day with a carriage carrying two corpses and a baby in his arms. That was all.
Now, Old Jack's words had piqued Ye Feng's curiosity.
"Ye Feng, you are not allowed to become a soul master. Do you hear me?" Old Jack said sternly.
"Why can't I become a soul master?" Ye Feng asked.
"If I say you can't, then you can't," Old Jack replied domineeringly.
"That won't work. My life is my own to decide," Ye Feng retorted.
"You..."
Old Jack glared at Ye Feng angrily. After a moment, he calmed down and said, "Our village only has one spot for a work-study student. As the village chief, I won't give it to you. Let's see how you get into the Junior Soul Master Academy without it."
"Am I not your adopted son?" Ye Feng growled.
"Precisely because of that, I can decide whether or not to let you study at the Junior Soul Master Academy," Old Jack said with a cunning smile. He turned to Tang San and asked enticingly, "Tang San, tell Grandpa, would you like to go to a special school to learn the cultivation methods of soul masters? Only there can you gain the most accurate knowledge about martial souls."
"I'll have to ask my father about it," Tang San replied.
"Grandpa Jack, you just said there's only one spot for a work-study student in our village, right?"
"Yes, and this spot is yours."
"But Ye Feng's soul power is higher than mine!"
"So what? What kind of progress can his useless martial soul achieve?"
"It just... seems unfair to him."
"I am the village chief, and I raised him. If I give the spot to you instead of him, that's my decision."
Old Jack and Tang San walked farther away, their voices fading into the distance, leaving Ye Feng standing alone.
Ye Feng picked up a stone from the ground and hurled it angrily at the stone pillar with the handprint of the Soul Sage. "Damn it!" he cursed.
He watched the retreating figures of Old Jack and Tang San, his brow furrowed with worry.
Since Old Jack had denied him the study spot, Ye Feng couldn't enroll in the Junior Soul Master Academy in Notting City. Without attending the academy, he would have no one to help him hunt spirit beasts for soul rings, and he wouldn't be able to meet Xiao Wu.
Old Jack's decision had disrupted Ye Feng's original plan.
"Should I go to Su Yuntao and study at the Soul Master Academy under the Spirit Hall?" Ye Feng wondered.
He recalled Su Yuntao's invitation. Before leaving, Su Yuntao had told him that if he changed his mind, he could go to the Spirit Hall in Notting City to find him.
"Little San, I didn't expect your talent to be so outstanding. It's a pity you have such a father," Old Jack's voice echoed from afar.
Ye Feng pursed his lips and murmured, "Tang San's father isn't just an ordinary man. He's the Clear Sky Douluo, famous throughout the world of soul masters. Moreover, Tang San has also inherited his father's martial soul, the Clear Sky Hammer. When you go to ask, Tang Hao will agree to let Tang San attend the Soul Master Academy. I envy Tang San for having a Titled Douluo as a father from the start."
*Ding dong!*
"The system has detected that the host envies Tang San for having a Titled Douluo father. The system expresses dissatisfaction and presents the host with the title, Douluo master!"
...
**PS:** Guess, everyone—who is Ye Feng's master?
