Chapter 19: Dinner Chaos: No Money!

At this moment—

Shōhoku High School

Ryu sat on a bench, chatting with Hikoichi.

Passing female students couldn't help but glance at Ryu as they walked by.

"Hey, isn't that Ryu, the first-year basketball player?"

"I heard from a friend that he led the first-years to a big win over the upperclassmen during their practice match!"

"Really? He's not just handsome but also good at basketball? I'm definitely going to watch the next game!"

After a while, Ayako walked by, pushing her bicycle.

When she spotted Ryu, she called out loudly:

"Ryu-kun! What are you still doing here? Aren't you going home?"

Ryu waved enthusiastically. "Ayako-senpai! How did you know I was waiting for you?"

He smiled brightly as he spoke, and Ayako's cheeks turned slightly red. She bit her lip and hesitated for a moment before suggesting, "How about we walk together?"

She had a few things about training to discuss with him, so she decided to ask casually.

"Sure, no problem," Ryu replied, turning to Hikoichi. "I'll see you later, Hikoichi. Let's meet up at Ryonan High next time."

Ryu patted Hikoichi's shoulder, showing how familiar they had already become.

"Alright, don't forget our plan. I'll leave you two alone. Bye!"

Hikoichi, understanding the situation, smiled politely at Ayako and left the school grounds.

As Hikoichi walked away, Ayako's face flushed again. She brushed her hair back awkwardly to hide her embarrassment.

"Well then, Ryu-kun, let's go."

Ryu, noticing how endearing Ayako looked, chuckled softly.

"Let's go."

Ayako, usually bold and outgoing, showing this shy side was a surprise to him.

The two shared a laugh as they walked out of Shōhoku's gates together.

"Oh, by the way," Ayako said, suddenly remembering something. "That guy earlier—he's from Ryonan High, isn't he? Do you know him?"

"That's Hikoichi," Ryu explained. "He's on the Ryonan basketball team. Just a benchwarmer, though. He's a pretty interesting guy."

"Ryonan's basketball team? Why's he looking for you?" Ayako asked, stopping in her tracks.

"Ha ha, Senpai, you're overthinking it. He's just a friend," Ryu said with a mischievous grin, patting her shoulder. "What? You think I'd betray Shōhoku or something?"

Ayako sighed at his mix of charm and mischief. "Fine, fine, I trust you. But seriously, what did he want?"

"Ah, it's about a little challenge," Ryu said, dodging the full explanation. He quickly changed the subject. "Anyway, Senpai, where's a good place to eat around here? I'm starving!"

"Oh, right! We haven't had dinner yet," Ayako said, her stomach growling softly. She rubbed her tummy and thought for a moment.

"There's a new sushi place nearby. Want to try it?"

"Sounds good. Let me treat you this time," Ryu offered. He was genuinely hungry and figured this was a good chance to thank Ayako for her help in the past.

"You're treating? Well, I won't hold back then!" Ayako laughed, accepting his offer without hesitation.

Ryu smiled but thought to himself, She really is straightforward. I like her personality.

At the Sushi Restaurant

The two crossed the street and entered a sushi restaurant. The décor was simple, but the lighting made it feel inviting.

"Welcome to Kumamoto Sushi! What can I get for you two?" the owner greeted them warmly.

After a satisfying meal—

"Excuse me, we're ready to pay!" Ryu called out to the owner.

He began patting his pockets to find his wallet. But no matter where he searched, it wasn't there.

A cold sweat broke out as he realized—he hadn't brought his wallet.

By this time, the owner had already approached their table.

"Thank you for dining with us. The total is 10,000 yen," the owner said, handing Ryu the bill with a friendly smile.

Ryu looked at the bill, then awkwardly turned to Ayako.

"Uh… Senpai, I didn't bring any money!"
