Skyrim System In Westeros

Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Myr

Wright lay in a bed in the ship's cabin, holding Nymeria close while they talked. Beside them, Tyene had already fallen asleep.

"Does your father visit Braavos often?" Wright asked.

Nymeria replied, "These past years, he's been traveling between the Free Cities, working as a mercenary and living quite the carefree life."

"This trip will be much easier with your father around," Wright said. "When we reach Braavos, I'll need to borrow money from the Iron Bank. Having your father as an intermediary will help."

Nymeria looked surprised. "Borrow money from the Iron Bank? You're not exactly strapped for cash — why do you need a loan?"

"To expand my business, of course. Remember when Renly and I talked about this back at the magic academy? You were there."

Nymeria scoffed. "Whenever you and Renly get together, it's either magic or business. You two talk for hours; how am I supposed to know when you discussed it?"

Wright chuckled. "Relax. But when we reach Myr, I'll need your and Tyene's help for something a bit secretive. We'll have to split up, and it's important that you don't tell your father."

Nymeria turned to him with a raised brow. "Understood. You usually leave these kinds of things to your men, so this must be very sensitive."

Since it wasn't a matter of war or state, Wright decided to explain. "While in the Red Keep, I made a deal with Varys, the Spider. He wants me to transport someone from Myr to Westeros. The target is a high-ranking figure in Myr, so we can't just abduct them outright without causing a major stir. If their disappearance triggers panic, we'll be unwelcome here, and we're planning to stay in Essos for a while."

Nymeria rolled onto her side, turning her back to him. "I've only killed before—never kidnapped anyone. I'll discuss it with Tyene tomorrow. Now, let's sleep."

Wright didn't push further, settling into the silence. Yet his mind drifted back to the Stepstones. The islands' strategic location made them crucial, especially with trade between the continents increasing. Conquered temporarily during King Viserys reign, they had since fallen into lawlessness. Pirate activity had turned the area into a death trap for merchant ships. Wright resolved to find a way to reclaim and secure the Stepstones.

Myr, located on the western coast of Essos, was nestled against the expansive and tranquil Myrth Bay. A stretch of Valyrian road extended straight out from the city into the continent.

The city's architecture was crafted primarily from white stone, and gardens adorned every corner. At its heart stood the central fortress, a marvel of design with a ring of towering white spires connected by an elevated circular walkway. Such architecture was unheard of in Westeros, making it a sight to behold.

Oberyn walked with Wright and his companions through the streets, providing an introduction along the way:

"In Myr, the ratio of freemen to slaves is about 1:3. Most people here have olive skin, black hair, and dark eyes, very similar to us Dornish. The city is governed collectively by a council of governors, who are essentially wealthy merchants and nobles from the region."

Oberyn wasn't particularly thorough in his explanations, as his knowledge was primarily focused on the upper echelons of society. Before long, they arrived at the gates of an opulent mansion.

"I'm meeting a governor for drinks. Care to join me?"

Wright declined with a polite smile. "No, thank you. I have other matters to attend to. Let's meet back on the ship tomorrow afternoon."

Oberyn nodded. "Suit yourself. I've assigned four Dornish guards to accompany Nymeria as her attendants. Wright, you shouldn't be wandering around unguarded — there are some tasks you shouldn't handle alone."

Nymeria replied, "Thank you, Father."

Wright nodded silently, neither agreeing nor objecting. Despite his initial plan to travel without attendants, Oberyn's arrangements couldn't be avoided.

Myr's streets were lined with shops selling lace, lenses, carvings, screens, paintings, and rugs, along with local specialties like glass windows, spices, triple-shot crossbows, and pale green spirits. Nymeria and Tyene strolled ahead, entering one shop after another, emerging with their arms full before moving on to the next. Before long, the four guards following them were laden with packages.

Wright walked behind them alongside a local governor named Meyer, one of Storm's End's glassware suppliers. Wright's visit promised a lucrative order, and Meyer, eager to please, enthusiastically shared insights about Myr's local affairs while inviting Wright to stay at his estate during his visit.

"Meyer," Wright began, "we'll finalize the order once I return. Storm's End's production has recently increased, and the next shipment of pocket watches will be substantial. They're all top-quality, so you can't sell them below the agreed price."

"Rest assured, Lord Wright. I sell exclusively to slave owners — they have plenty of coin and no shortage of ways to spend it."

Wright continued, "Also, the last shipment of glass from Myr was lost to pirates, delaying our product deliveries. Let's settle that compensation with this new order."

Meyer agreed but voiced a concern. "That compensation will be paid, but the pirates around the Stepstones are becoming a real problem. I can't afford these losses much longer."

Wright replied, "Then I suggest you propose at the governors' council to increase the number of Storm's End warships stationed at Myr's port. It'll benefit both of us."

"I'll make the suggestion," Meyer promised.

Stationing a few warships at Myr for resupply wasn't an issue, as the Crown already had personnel handling such matters in the city. However, if the number of warships exceeded ten, other Free Cities might view it as the beginnings of an informal military alliance. Whether these ships were from Storm's End or the Seven Kingdoms, it would hardly matter in the long term. Over time, Myr could increasingly fall under the influence of the Iron Throne.

Magister Meyer understood these dynamics well. For the sake of his economic interests, he was willing to push forward the proposal. Aligning with the Iron Throne was far preferable to being overrun by Tyrosh and Lys — losing the city would render the idea of independence meaningless.

A group of children ran by, laughing and chasing one another. As they passed Wright, a crumpled piece of paper fell to the ground. Using magic, Wright levitated it into his hand and pocketed it discreetly.

"Our business is concluded," Wright said. "Now, why don't you tell me a bit about Myr's history, particularly its connections to Valyria?"

Meyer launched into an explanation:

"The origins of Myr are unclear, but by the Dawn Age, before the Long Night, there was already a settlement here. When the Valyrian Freehold expanded westward, they destroyed the original settlement and built the Myr we know today as a hub for trade. Myr maintained its autonomy but functioned as a vassal state of Valyria.

"After Valyria's destruction, Myr gained full independence. However, Volantis, claiming to be Valyria's successor, repeatedly tried to conquer it. Tyrosh and Lys have also clashed with Myr on several occasions."

"Can you take me to see a glassworks tomorrow?" Wright asked.

Meyer laughed. "Only foreigners find them so fascinating. Of course, I'll take you."

That evening, after a lavish banquet hosted by the governor, Wright and his two wives returned to their guest chambers. After some time spent in affectionate company, Wright waited until deep into the night before casting a silencing spell. He turned to Nymeria and said:

"Take your weapons and head to the port. Find a merchant ship called Dove. If you see two children near the ship, go directly aboard and wait in the cabin. Did you buy those Myrish women's clothes during the day?"

Nymeria retrieved a spear from her luggage. Its shaft had been modified by Wright for easy transport, splitting into three sections that could be locked together to form a full-length weapon.

"Of course," she replied.

Tyene pulled two sets of Myrish women's clothing from their shopping bags, tossing one to Nymeria before beginning to change herself.
