Chapter 40: A Unique Flying Lesson
Everyone gazed up at Chu Yang, who had already soared into the sky, mouths agape along with the startled Madam Hooch. Ever since the invention of flying broomsticks, no wizard had ever flown by standing on one. And more bizarrely, Chu Yang actually managed to pull it off.
Even seasoned wizards who flew using the standard sitting posture couldn't always succeed on their first try...
"I have to admit, standing on the broom is way cooler than sitting. Don't you think so, Harry?" Ron whispered in Harry's ear, tilting his head slightly.
"It is pretty cool, like surfing in the sky," Harry nodded but quickly added with concern, "But it's so dangerous. Without holding the broom, how can he control it? If he falls, it's not just a matter of spending a few days in the hospital!"
A worried Hermione ran up to Madam Hooch, urging her, "You should fly up and bring Chu Yang down; this is getting really dangerous."
Madam Hooch, snapping back to reality, quickly mounted her broom. But just then, Neville let out a series of panicked screams.
Somehow, Neville had decided to mimic Chu Yang's stance, standing on the broom. However, unlike Chu Yang, he didn't have the same control. He crouched low, wobbling unsteadily, and had already floated five or six meters off the ground.
It looked as though he was squatting in the sky, about to... relieve himself.
"Neville, what are you doing?"
"I just wanted to try it! I didn't expect..."
As he spoke, Neville suddenly jolted in midair, causing him to clamp his mouth shut in fright, focusing all his energy on trying to control the broom.
But it was futile! Neville kept rising higher. When he glanced down at the ground, he froze completely, stuck in a rigid position on the broom.
Meanwhile, Chu Yang, soaring through the sky, was too engrossed in his own fun to notice the commotion below.
The reason Chu Yang could stand so steadily on the broom without falling was due to his superhuman physique, which gave him incredible body control.
Additionally, his magical power, infused with the strength of Wood Release, allowed him to communicate with wooden magical objects, enabling him to control the broom with precision, even without using his hands.
These two factors allowed him to perform such an extraordinary feat.
In fact, Chu Yang hadn't originally planned to do this. He had intended to follow the lessons and learn to fly just like everyone else.
But memories can be tricky sometimes! Having watched so many immortal cultivation dramas in the past, Chu Yang had a deep impression of "sword-flying." So when he saw the broom at his feet, his instincts kicked in, and he stepped onto it.
And just like that, he took off!
Chu Yang enjoyed the feeling of the wind howling in his ears. As he ascended higher and higher, adrenaline surged through his body.
The thrill of flying was far more exhilarating than driving at 300 mph!
"This feels great, but standing on a broom is a bit awkward. I'll have to see if I can get a custom design made later," Chu Yang mused, feeling slightly dissatisfied.
As Chu Yang prepared to return, he noticed two figures quickly approaching from below.
A distressed Neville! And a frantic Madam Hooch!
She raced towards Neville, praying as she went.
There had been accidents with first-years in the past, but never anything this outrageous. Even the experienced Madam Hooch was at a loss for what to do.
Seeing Neville in danger, Chu Yang immediately dove towards him. One was rushing upward, the other downward, and in a split second, Chu Yang leaped onto Neville's broom.
Neville first felt the broom dip sharply, then a strong jolt shook it, causing his hands to release their grip in shock.
This happened because when Chu Yang's magic connected with the broom, he essentially seized control from Neville!
Chu Yang's magical power, in both quality and quantity, far surpassed Neville's. So when their magic clashed, Neville's hands were instantly forced off the broom by the surge of magic.
"Hold on!"
In a daze, Neville, flailing his arms wildly, heard Chu Yang's voice and felt a firm hand grip his shoulder.
Without thinking, Neville turned and clung tightly to Chu Yang's leg, taking a deep breath and straightening his body. As he calmed down, the broom began to stabilize.
Only then did Chu Yang guide the broom back down to the field.
Madam Hooch, trailing behind, was utterly stunned by what she had just witnessed!
Professor McGonagall, watching from her office, was equally shocked!
As a Quidditch fanatic, Professor McGonagall swore she had never seen anyone control a flying broomstick in such a way! What was even more unbelievable was that she had just witnessed Chu Yang forcibly wrest control of the broom from Neville! How was that even possible?
Had she not seen it with her own eyes, Professor McGonagall would never have believed it!
As Chu Yang landed on the field with a still-shaken Neville, the entire field erupted into cheers.
Even Madam Hooch couldn't help but applaud as she descended, exclaiming, "Mr. Chu Yang, that was an incredibly imaginative way to fly! You saved your classmate. Can you tell me how you did it?"
"Just went with my gut, honestly, I'm not really sure..." Chu Yang scratched his head awkwardly. How could he explain this? It wasn't about technique, it was about physique — some people are just built differently.
"That makes sense. It's hard to explain the feeling of your first flight. Most wizards rely on intuition," Madam Hooch nodded understandingly, smiling. "Still, this new flying posture could have an impact on Quidditch."
At the mention of Quidditch, the atmosphere on the field instantly became more lively.
It was like football fans hearing the word "World Cup."
Madam Hooch then turned to Neville and asked, "Mr. Longbottom, are you alright? Can you continue the lesson?"
Neville, still a bit wobbly, nodded.
"Alright, everyone, continue practicing what I've just taught. I'll be right back." With that, Madam Hooch headed towards the school building.
As soon as she left, the first-years flocked to Chu Yang, eagerly pestering him to teach them how to stand on the broom and fly.
Chu Yang helplessly explained, "I already told you, it's all about intuition. I can't teach you!"
"Chu Yang's made it clear! Stop giving him a hard time!" Hermione, her golden, bushy hair puffed up like an angry kitten, stood protectively in front of Chu Yang, sternly shooing the other students away.
Ron and Harry also stepped in to persuade everyone to return to their places, reminding them that if Madam Hooch caught them, points would surely be deducted.
Looking disappointed, the students reluctantly went back to practicing as instructed.
Hermione sneakily sidled up to Chu Yang and whispered, "I helped get rid of them. You remember you promised to teach me."
